pointless duty free

Australian airport and downtown duty free interests were all bought up by Hong Kong interests, and since then prices, particularly alcohol, have become too high. Best to buy on arrival in UK, etc. Although good malt whisky can be bought for similar prices in supermarkets there.

This really does not surprise me at all, I was thinking a similar thing when I went through HK recently and was told AU customers are not allowed to buy liquor as it will be taken by security before boarding (I've only been through twice). Made me think there was some kind of weirdness forcing people to buy from Australian DF stores. HK could easily do what Changi/J'Berg does and use the bags / return to customers after security to allow the process.
Can you confirm this has happened one hundred percent?

This thread is 'Pointless duty free' !! Lol

It is indeed. And everyone is saying dan Murphy's is cheaper than duty free stores making the purchase of any duty free alcohol pointless. Just wondering how that position applies to the example I've presented.

I suppose it's the sceptic in me, but US and Aus are the only ones (i have not come arcoss it elsewhere) doing the searching for liquids pre-boarding. I'm yet to be convinced for Aus that it is not linked to forcing us to buy booze when you arrive home. Question is why isn't this done on the outbound leg???? If you are going to have a regulation do it for both in and out bound!

Not quite, Nuance is based in Zurich. Australia provides 25% of their revenue despite having over 300 shops in 67 locations.

Have to disagree a bit here. Been buying some good scotch o/s and in all cases i remember duty free in Asia is cheaper that DM's. Some cheaper labels, maybe; but quality stuff no comparison and when you consider in most cases you buy 1l bottles compared to the 700ml sold mostly here; it comes out far cheaper. when travelling I will check the prices of what i want, go back the lounge and use DM's site as the benchmark.

I agree with leadman about whisky. I usually find some 1L bottles worth buying in Changi for around the same price or a bit cheaper than the 700ml at home. It's usually the mid to expensive ones, not the cheap end of the single malt spectrum through.

I would be surprised if you can get JW Blue King George for lower than $399 thanks to Aldi. And last year I bought two bottles of XR for AUD$160 at Sydney duty free. It always pays to shop around ;)

I'm always interested in Bundy prices, if they have it. Generally it's just the UP Bundy not OP. But then that's not single malt whiskey.

Stop Press: regarding this and post around No.50 when someone said Duty Free cannot beat Bundy OP Rum 1l at DM's for $29.

JR Duty Free PER city store (our only non PER Int store) normally has OP for $39.98 per 1l. Current special is $25.99.

All you you have to do is fly over before next Friday to PER, visit the city and Murray St. Purchase your booze and then fly overseas with it and you can save $8 on 2 litres.

NB: special not available at our one and only PER Int store which is same group (First Duty Free/ JR Duty Free).

Forgot to ask if they have a free set of kitchen knives with this - can't take them on the plane anyway!!

Well I just visited my local DM's and they dont sell Bundy OP Rum in a 1L bottle (always thought that size was DF special), 700Ml and 1.125 only. As for price 700 ml $49.95 and $78.99 for the 1.125 ml. Nothing near what has been quoted here.

Don't worry. No need to fly to Perth, will be picking up 2x 1l of OP in Adelaide tomorrow morning for $59.

Btw I said duty free was better than dan Murphy's. That has always been my position.

They have a decent range at Changi and can pick up the odd special as well.

Pricing for Changi can be found here. Even at the cheap end of the spectrum the prices are OK ..... (eg JW Red 1.125 litre $23 at SIN, $30 at MEL, $55 regular price at DM)

I was starting up a scotch collection bought entirely from Changi, but after reading this thread I am thinking Bundy might be more worthwhile

Apologies Medhead. I initially read your challenge the other way round. (iPhone screen and not paying attention are my only excuses.

Was as chuffed I had "met" your challenge in of all places Expenseville Central of Perth.

We are back to normal at the end of next week $39.98 a litre at our city centre duty free.

I was chuffed you'd met the challenge as well. I read your post the wrong way around as well. Then realised and edited to add the BTW. Just picked you Bombay sapphire for 73 MYR in KL. $24.
