pointless duty free

Tell them to have it delivered from Dan M...$160 is a red hot price for JW Blue!

Delivery will probably be involved. But to me as this person believes DF is always cheaper. I'm not going to rip them off, but maybe just pretend it was DF booze.

I have found perfumes/aftershaves (genuine) in the local shopping malls for considerably less than the DF stores. Granted you won’t always find those “collections in the nice box” specials in the malls, but sometimes the price difference is just too great to pass by.
Link below might help some transiting Sand Central Station this month…

As a comparison for the above site, the Sony DSCHX50 (now superseded) camera is USD444 in DXB, but currently the new model HX60V is AUD399 at Good Guys – on line, always best to check before you leave!!. And you could go through TRS as well !!!
Don't spend all that much time chasing up the booze. The three 750ml Wild Turkey Rare Breeds waiting to be picked up at arrival at PER is good enough for me. In and out on the way to the lounge in less than 5 minutes.

But the best thing about the DF shops in the airports is they keep the travelling newbies from blocking the access ways to the lounges (flack jacket on).

That is my standing order in/out of Sydney :)

Interesting how times change. On our honeymoon in 1984, in tassie, going out thru 'hell's gates'...bloody cold, the boss and I thought we'd have a warming rum. Asked our waitress..' Certainly sir, but it's only bundaberg rum'. Of course the reply from a Dyed in the wool queenslander was' ok, I suppose that will be ok':lol::lol:

It says as much about Tassie as anything else !!!

Good too see you honeymooning in Aus

To fill in the list, just been through ICN. The Glenfiddich 18 yo was too good of a price to pass up! I think in summary for a scotch drinker, duty free is not "pointless"

Never tried Wild Turkey Rare Breeds, perhaps I should get 2 or 3 next time around instead of another 2 Jack D.
Already have about 6 bottles of Jack unopened.

The three bottles will put you on the 2250ml limit.

It’s definitely worth a try.
If you can, check the label on the neck of the bottle. It will display the alcohol percentage and the batch number. Generally around 54.1%, (108 proof) but have got as high as 54.4%, it varies as it is barrel proof, so what comes out of the barrel is bottled and not (supposedly) diluted.
Prefer mine with a little soda water, no ice.

Also works as a great remedy for sore throats.
Pour 50mm into a glass, no mixer, gargle, and swallow. Repeat three times in quick succession. Sore throat gone in less than 15 minutes. Suggest not to drive or operate any machinery for a while afterwards. Flying optional....

Purchase of alcohol "duty free" in the USA or Asia is pointless. The price out in the street is literally 1/3 to 1/4 of the airport price. I always buy outside and pack it in my suitcase.

I do the same, so much cheaper!

Agree last week I was in Santa Barbara and bought a 1.75 litre bottle of Jose Cuervo Tequila at a CVS store for $18 USD...yes CVS sell a limited range of Liquor.

The price at the DFS at LAX for a Jose Cuervo 1 litre bottle was $21.

Love CVS for liquor. Saw JW Black for $23 today!

Two years ago, my husband and I spent a weekend driving the Kentucky Bourbon trail (got the free tshirt to prove it). Woodford was the best tasting bourbon, Markers Mark the best distillery (I got to wax dip my own bottle and the grounds were beautiful), Jim Bean was fun and Wild Turkey the biggest disappointment (literally a wooden shack for a gift shop/taste testing).

Never made it as far as Jack Daniels (something about the boss wanting me back in the office) so maybe next time.

Sydney DF is selling a very nice bottle of Jim Bean Masterpiece Bourbon at the moment, $225 at DF and $250 at DMs. Comes in a nice wood/perspex display box.

I just got stung late last year with Australia's (and apparently fast becoming the world's) new rules on duty free alcohol. Flew Rome, Doha, Perth. Purchased some amazing cognac and single malt in Rome Airport as they have a way better selection than both Perth and Doha combined and at far better prices. Even though they were specially marked duty free bottles (with the duty free tape on them) and packaged into sealed duty free bags, upon boarding at Doha, I was informed that due to security reasons, the bottles weren't allowed on the plane. I was not alone, there were literally bowes and boxes of duty free alcohol and perfume having to be left at the airport. You are now only allowed to bring back duty free carry-on from your last point of departure.

IO don't understand the reasons for this. The Qatar Airways plane was happy to have all these liquids as cabin luggage from Rome to Doha, but not from Doha to Perth.

This is hardly new and I would suggest that the DF store in Rome sold you the bottle in error.

I know for a fact that the DF stores at certain airports (LHR comes to mind) ask you where you final destination is, so that they sell you items within the LAG's allowance.

Can someone confirm, but I believe at DXB they will transfer the consficated goods into the hold, so that you can pick them up again back in AU.

Well I'd like to know why they didn't transfer the 10+ large crates of duty free liquids they and stacked at the check-in counter for this flight. I know I travelled not 6 months previous to this and had no issue doing the exact same thing with the exact same airline. Anyway, not wanting to step on anyone's toes, I just though I could share an experience relating to DF that others may well not be aware of. As I say, I was no Robinson Caruso on this flight. It left a crowd of us wandering what was going to happen to the crates of perfume, liquor and wine that we all had to leave behind.

It is this type of behaviour that is pissing me off about AU LAG rules! It is not a standard across the board / nor across the airlines. Such as so many airports SIN/JNB/DXB(sort of) that will happily cart your alcohol beyond the security check at the gate and you take it on the flight (Emirates put it on the hold which is the same thing). Once word gets around to these stores I'm sure they will see what advantanges they can get by working with the airport/security compared to the loss of income when people stop purchasing DF alcohol bound for Aust.

That being said... hot off the press from Changi yesterday morning.
(side note, i still had an old bag sitting in the house from Feb I hadn't opened yet, Russian Standard regular was ~$21.30SGD but yesterday it was $24.70SGN or so looks like a $3SGD increase in 3 months!!)

JW/Black $43.80SGD (~$37AUD)
JW/Double Black $47.70SGD (~$41.18AUD)

..and in light of recent conversations
Bundy UP (700ml) $38.30SGD (~$33AUD)
and I bought a bottle since it was staring me in the face and imagine my complete shock and horror when I arrived in PER and they had Bundy UP 1L for $31.99!!!! I would of never imagined it. I guess their prices are actually decent for one item for once (the masses will be happy I'm sure)

But Mr Fellows, how did you even Bundy UP is on special at PER Int?
I thought you just walk past and laugh at all of queuing to pick up our return duty free?

Seriously, they do have some specials at the mo. Don't expect that price to last.

Will be checking out SYD Int & DXB prices from Tuesday:
PER Dom at godforsaken O'Clock for a 1 hr meeting in SYD then QF1 to LHR for a Mars Bar trip. (Work, rest and play).

Cheers

Chris

Correct! I found myself stuck behind some slower walkers hogging the main central lanes through, I deviated spinning across one of the gaudy stands covered in SPECIAL tags. When my eyes regained focus as to where the e-gates were located I saw a few bundy bottles sitting there on the shelf... I had to rub my eyes again as the price didn't seem correct!! I felt it was my duty to report it back to the masses that there was a point to these Australian owned duty-free stores...and that is to provide local australian rum to the world for the cheapest price. Never shall I think of aquiring it anywhere else now.

I also forgot to note what I found quite tacky..there was a girl right at the end of the aircraft ramp handing out "20% discount" vouchers for perfume/make-up to everybody getting off the flight, there was no escape having one thrust into your hands. I thought I was attending the local election for a moment. Times must be tough.

I'll be back through the SIN/PER run tonight and back on Wednesday, I may have a decent look at the Bundy selection as there was quite a few fancy looking bottles. No doubt their 'sale' will be over by then. If anybody wants a price from SIN let me know.

They have sucked you in. From now on you will hesitate every time you walk thru to the eGates to check if it is that day of the year that Bundy OP is on special at PER Int.

I will keep an eye out for the gent who deviates 5 metres to the Bundy rack, stops for 2 seconds to scan and absorb the data and wanders off muttering imprecations about Perth airport, duty free ripoff and getting his Bundy fix at DMs.
