pointless duty free

i know I'm being a cynic, but i still feel its got something to do with forcing us to buy our DF in Australia. I've said this before but i still cannot see why we have to follow the US, but why is it not done flying out of the country!!!! Isn't the threat still the same? So are we protecting our DF on the way out and in?

Thought I'd revive this thread. For those of you with an Amex card (Amex or Big 4 issued) Amex currently have a deal whereby you get $30 back on $100 at Sydney Duty Free after you have registered. This may bring Duty Free back into the reasonable category at Sydney Duty Free. You can register multiple cards too (there is a limit on cards that can register though so get in!)

Very much appreciated for this. Just registered and perfect timing for the 25th Wedding anniversary holiday!
Always happy to help, I'm flying out for a week to Rarotonga myself tomorrow so have registered the families Amex cards (6 in total, can you believe). Wouldnt normally buy much Duty Free but this fits in so well will buy some spirits, a few bottles of wine (including some Sparkling Shiraz) and we'll maybe find a few more things to buy.

Given Duty Free is normally not that great a deal happy to share a way to sweeten the deal!

Thanks. The time fits in with a quick trip to NZ and Ive been eyeing off something special for my nephews 18th so this helps.

Brings the scotch down to a nice price, so worth getting two. I just wonder who is paying the bill for this? Are they saying their prices are too dear and uncompetitive?

Yes, I must admit when I saw the promo my immediately thought was that they'd obviously been reading this thread and needed to do something to get us onboard!

Recently whilst in transit at KLIA, Bose QC15 were $500AUD. Complete cough*ing rip off. How they justify this when you can get them retail outside of airports for $300 is beyond me. Duty free these days is so expensive and not worth wasn't your time or money on. Even alcohol or perfumes act now can be found cheaper at normal retail outlets.

It depends on the airport, KLIA has never been very competitive on any front, and electronics at any airport DF have never ever been very competitive. And most Australian DFopoly's are not that competitive either. There are still bargains to be had though, particularly on alcohol, I know SIN & HKG are reasonably competitive, and usually much better priced. To take latest Dan Murphy's catalogue, Chivas 12 yo Scotch 700ml is $39, sounds pretty cheap - but it is the same price as 1 litre at Changi. I guess it's sort of in the ballpark, whereas historically retail never used to be competitive.

JW Blue is cheaper at Dan M today than the DF price at SYD...Dan M have JW Blue 700ml for $149 , a great price probably as low as I have seen it for years.

The Sydney DF price is $165 for 750ml, so a rare win to the non traveller!

Well I recon Johnnie Walker Red at $25 for 1.25L bottle duty free is is excellent value, 2 bottles via airline friends with their discount $40 even better.

Electronics tough no.

Agree but it's only about $6 cheaper(on volume) .. Not going to drive the 100+k to our nearest Dan's

I only drink Blue if on EK J flight, or at my Scottish friends pad!.

Saw the Dans price of $149, not tempted have 4 bottles Red to drink first :).

Sure, when buying duty free anything at the airport, you aren't paying duty (obviously), but the seller usually has to pay exorbitant rents and will increase their profit margin to a point which they believe the average traveler will pay (because they think that if its duty free it must be cheaper). As we all here know, one has to do one's homework before travel.

Our last stopover before returning home is usually Thailand where I collect a couple of 1L bottles of mixer scotch (usually 100 Pipers) for around $18 a bottle from the local BigC or similar, and put them in my case, since that is a whole heap cheaper than SYD df. Then I get a couple of single malt bottles at SYD df, and I don't look so much like a boozer.:lol::lol:

So you bring in more than your allowance?
