I signed up to the lumo deal just before Christmas and got my bonus points as well as them giving me a $50 credit to cover my cancellation fees from AP&G. Interesting thing they told me that as I'm renting, if I move I get bonus points again as they consider it another connection...might be moving later in the year so might come in handy!

Hi Warks,

I signed up to them a few weeks ago for this reason an it was very easy. They say the points will be credited after 1 last bill cycle with your current provider and sure enough my points came through today.

The advertised rate I got with Lumo was better than what I was getting with AGL. AGL offered 25% off but I still opted for Lumo because I was a sucker for the points.

In other words, tell your provider you want to cancel and I am sure they will offer a discount. Take more time to do the maths then I did and see what's best for you. If I'm not mistaken, government regulation makes it a lot easier to change providers now to shop around.

All the best.

Hey Doc James,

Did you do anything to get the discounts on electricity and gas...eg. threaten to cancel?

I currently use Lumo. Had no problems with them over 18 months.

15% discount on gas and 20% on electricity rate if paid on time (might be the other way around I haven't got a bill with me).

Got the 10,000 sign up and 6pt/$ and they take Amex without surcharge.
Win/win/win. Rates are competitive but using the VA points wisely makes the difference to "best in market".

It's very easy to change providers, but a lot of them lock you into a contract which may have high exit fees.

And as always, shop around. Use iSelect and energywatch websites. The pay on time discounts are often a farce (hence my huge recommendation of Momentum, the Customer Service has been excellent and they're the cheapest).

When your 2 years up, and you take no action, they might roll you on to a new 2 year contract and give you the 10,000 points again!

That's exactly what happened to me. The 2nd 10,000 was unexpected and I still receive the 6 points per $ spent. Up until now have had no problems with LUMO (formally Qld Electricity)

regards
