Pre-Departure Baggage Weighing

On my 3 BNE -LST-BNE flights in the last 2 years my hand carry and everyone else's was weighed. But I was wearing my Rex jacket which is good for an extra 10 kgs.
As well before QF had a late MCY flight I regularly had my carry on measured and weighed by the same JQ FA every time. He hated me just maybe because I called him out as a bully for hassling a 90 year old woman.
But I never failed as forewarned is forearmed.

I've got a QF BNE-MEL flight tomorrow followed by a JQ MEL-BKK flight on Saturday.

I purchased 40kg luggage and kept the 7kg carry-on limit. There's no real way of knowing how much each bag weighs but I used SYD-BNE flight 2 weeks ago as a guide and I've been weighing everything to go into each bag

- luggage currently 22.5kg
- golf clubs 16.5kg
- carry on 8kg? (I don't really know)

Does my laptop and tablet count as carryon? I notice the OP said they removed those items when they were weighed.

I still have a few things to put in luggage/golf clubs. I may have to wear 2-3 t-shirts and possibly 2 pair of pants. I can also add some heavy things into my jacket.

By the way I would have purchased 45kg luggage if that was an option. Not keen on the price for extra 7kg carry-on. Worse comes to worse I'll post some things back to SYD Saturday morning if too heavy.

Anything you can't wear counts. Definitely includes laptops.

If you can leave it with someone else whilst you get it weighed you'll be fine.

Thanks @justinbrett. I'll have to make do. I can improvise on what I can wear.

I will know tomorrow afternoon from the Qantas flight.

- luggage 20.8kg
- golf clubs 20.8kg
- carry on 7.8kg or at worst 7kg if very strict

They're usually somewhat lenient.

7.0-7.9 you're fine.
8.0-8.9 probably ok, with a "do better next time" disappointed look
9.0-9.9 you better smile your hardest
10.0 no chance.

If it's slightly over, a surprised look with a "I weighed it at home and it was under" can often work (I doubt their scales are calibrated regularly)

My last 2 flights out of CNS hand bags were weighed. Last year everyone was weighed at the gate and everyone without a tag was stopped but in April they decided to weigh hand luggage at check-in which because I only had hand baggage I completely missed, no one without a tag was stopped. Must just depend on the ground crew and what mood they’re in imo.

Perhaps I should eat up big and put on 20 (or 200) Kg just to spite them (I'm 62 Kg).

The whole thing's just a huge revenue raiser, nothing to do with safety...

Flying out of HBA they have been very strict on weighing bags and tagging the bags and checking everyone's bag has been weighed. However it seems it is all to easy to take a couple of things out of your bag, go get it weighed and then put them back in again.
Seems a lot of effort for Jetstar staff for not much gain.

By the way forgot to comment but no one weighing carry on at check-in or boarding area for JQ29 MEL-BKK last month.

I'll check again in a few days for JQ30 BKK-MEL.

Have flown ADL to Sydney and ADL to Melbourne return with Jetstar and so far have not had our carry on weighed, May and June 2022 flights,

Just came back from SYD to ADL. At SYD everyone had their bag weighed and tagged at the gate. I watched several unlucky souls get charged on the spot for extra baggage.
ADL - nothing 😀

Quite the contrary. It's $65 a pop if you get pinged for overweight carry on at the gate. When I've observed them checking entire flights, they've always been nice and busy with the mobile credit card terminal on hand to quickly capture funds. Easy money.

Pretty sure I paid less than $65 for one of my recent Jatstar flight.
A carry on bag that costs more than your entire flight, that is a good money grab!

It's effectively a fine - get caught at the gate you get charged the highest amount. Encourages people to pay up front, as they don't know if it will be checked or not.

Pretty much like ticket inspectors on public transport. You can't have them on every train, but you have to have them frequently enough, and the fine high enough, to scare enough people into buying a ticket before hand.

... or dont know if it will be overweight.

I have an imminent 3K flight coming up soon which cost SGD48, 7Kg carryon only.

To either pre-purchase 7Kg more of carryon or a checked bag (20Kg) before checking in would each cost SGD40.

It would be SGD60 if overweight at check in plus SGD20 per Kg over 15Kg. At the gate it would be SGD65.

I expect to be at the gate with under 6Kg.
