Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

PM has just confirmed international travel with home quarantine will be allowed at 80%

Trying to source more details.
The transcripts of some of this morning's radio interviews perhaps?:

In the 5AA interview for example:
"Right now, South Australia, for example, is doing the first trial of home quarantine. Steven Marshall’s doing a great job with this, and that will be the model for the rest of the country, and they're sharing that information with the other states. And, that means you'll be able to travel overseas once you get over 80 per cent and you'll be able to return to Australia and you'll be able to quarantine at home, not go through hotels. That means we’ll be able to bring more people home from overseas. It also means students will start to be able to return. People are coming out on skilled visas, which I know the Premier - he’s been saying this to me for not just three years but longer than that - about the need for South Australia to have access to those additional skills to grow their economy. That can happen again at much higher rates than we're seeing now."

I’m not sure if the trigger is 80% in a state (like NSW) for international borders or if it is the country figure. Probably worth someone asking PM next time he is at a presser or on radio as a follow up to international arrivals in home quarantine what is the international border trigger.
I’m also assuming it will be 2 weeks after the trigger point to allow for full protection, verification of number plus logistics for airlines and borders to be put in place. Still that would mean at worse start of December.

1164 in sydney with 4 being from overseas .... sigh at closed borders to double vacc'd people
To save a lot of other people the trouble of posting, here's my reaction:

That's appalling that there were 4 overseas cases today. I mean, these extra 4 over the 1160 local cases are probably going to throw out hospital system into total chaos, if any of them get sick enough to go to hospital. And they might have a scary new variant, that would totally be beyond the capability of the third world medical system that we have here in the former country of Australia (OK maybe fair in relation to the colony of WA, according to some media reports recently). And what a relief that we cut the arrival caps in half because if we didn't there would probably be 8 overseas cases today. Eight I say. And that would then be 1168 cases, and our medical system definitely cannot manage that. The extra 8 is just too much of a burden.

And anyway, what were these Australians doing in hotel quarantine anyway, if of course they are Australians. Seems like they have been out of the country. Well, they should not have been. Were they pursuing some personal self interest then, like their career, or caring for their overseas family members or something like that? Well they should not have been. They have had a long time to come home if they wanted to, so why are they doing it now? Oh a close family member is dying, who wasn't dying in March 2020? They lost their previously secure job overseas because of economic conditions and so they don't have a visa to stay there now? Well that isn't a compelling reason, and anyway, don't they know that even if they make it to Sydney, they won't be allowed to go anywhere else in the former country of Australia even if someone is dying, or the only home they own is located in one of the colonies of WA, QLD or VIC? No they are selfish, thoughtless, scary overseas Australians, so clearly not very Australian at all, especially if they have the hide to want to return from India, and none of them deserve to be let back into the country. Notice I didn't say their country, because they left it, so stuff them. That's why their passports are useless. And besides, none of them play footy or cricket or tennis, or make movies or music. If they did, then of course we should let them in, and let them go to whatever state they want, and give them special rules. Those people are heros, and they are only trying to do their essential work. And really, it's not reasonable to expect footy players to play footy without the in-person support of their wives and children, so let's be sure we bring them along too. I mean they are mainly young men, with needs, right. Speaks for itself. It's a good thing they are so respectful of the rules of their special bio-bubbles too.

And look, just in case you think we have lost our egalitarian streak, I think that hotel quarantine should apply to everyone who manages to get here. Yep, regardless of the actual COVID risk in the country they came from, regardless of whether they are vaccinated or not, regardless of whether they have tested negative on any number of occasions, yep even if they don't have COVID, it's pretty clear they are a danger to us all. Hotel quarantine for them all . They can't be trusted to do home quarantine, because some of them maybe broke the rules, back in March 2020, and of course, that means that nothing has changed since. No of course people don't have a deeper appreciation for what COVID means now than they did back then. And we definitely can't use technology to check on them, so it has to be personal checks. We can't do that because we don't have enough police and ADF to do it - because they are busy enforcing the curfews and the state border inter-colony crossings. Yes especially important to keep pregnant women, and children with cancer away from our hospitals, because they come from another colony. Oh well except for the 10,000 people a week who actually have COVID here in Australia. Those are true Australians, they never left the place, so we can trust them to quarantine at home.

Sorry, I have to go now, my 5G reception is fading a bit because I am just about due for my 2nd shot o AZ. I hope the reception picks up again after I get it. 5G is amazing. It lets you do stuff, faster.

Sarcasm alert, in case you missed it.

One point you don't note is where those 4 were intending to end up. Of course factually we don't know. If its Wagga Wagga, or Qld or similar??? My view is we still need hotel quarantine while we are in a phase of undervaccination (ie under 80% double dose). Won't be long to go - weeks.....

Until they move the goal posts again.

Until they move the goal posts again.
Based on today's media blitz by the PM and NSW authorities press conference, no goal posts are being moving.....(eg not making 12-15 part of the target vaccination).

My guess is Vic and SA think similarly. ACT probably will be dragged there. The other Qld, Tas, WA, NT - can't say....

Biggest smile on my face in ages.

Maybe bring forward July 2022 trip to March 2022, still highly doubt we'll be where we need to be late this year, and Government will need extra time to sort their cough out. Needs to be 7 days home quarantine though.

As I said previously, if anyone keen to go, but want to wait for official word then basically re-book within a week and go (yes I recognise for some work is in the way). Never know when things change and if State borders are any guide things could change for the worse rapidly.

Obviously need to be fully vaccinated, and preferably in a State that has reached 80%.

Well, Qantas sent me an email saying international travel from December. I took the bait.

I've booked my fully vaccinated Mum (on QF in J on points; I was pleasantly surprised at how cheap it seemed) for SYD-YVR vv in late April, returning late May. I'll worry about travel insurance which includes Covid for a senior with a couple of pre-existing conditions if it looks like the trip will actually happen. At this point, I'm prepared to pay whatever it costs.

Now fingers and toes crossed it can happen (Mum was meant to come to Vancouver in April 2020). I hope I haven't jinxed things!

Ye she said 'once we reach 80%, there is no reason to not allow international travel back in'. She even went with the emotive 'Imagine if we could allow all Australians back home by Christmas and NSW is well positioned to do that by the end of the year'.

Whos with me for GB for PM!!

And I reckon NSW will easily smash through the 80% barrier as NSW is easily the most multicultural state with overseas links.
Brilliant.

ACT chief Minister is on record as saying we will be including 12-15s in our vaccination statistics, so the goal posts have definitely moved there. Also WA is trying pretty hard to move them by giving the impression that they will not open state borders at 70% or international borders at 80%.

Reports today of groundswell of public opinion (58%) that that lockdowns etc should continue until 12-15s have been vaccinated. Hard to disagree with this, but it is a moving of the goal posts as to when lockdowns and restrictions will lift.

I really hope you are right but I am a bit sceptical.

I'm crossing everything for you too @Chalkie. Once you sort insurance, I would be very interested to hear about that too.

Well in NSW schools are proposed to be opened 25/10 which is likely to be well into 70% and perhaps 80% double dose.

I did ask on another thread did others get the impression that NSW authorities will remain in some lockdown post 80% where not fully vaccinated......

In ACT, the Chief Minister is just pushing vaccinations in that group, not re-writing the national plan. May be lobbying but not changing the plan.

So perhaps we need to think differently locally v opening international borders. Perhaps a case that 70% and 80% might mean less in term of changing local settings, but 80% of 16+ will be the benchmark for international restrictions and possibly how States treat international.
