Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

What dates were those visits? I might have been there too with my family. Although it was better in the late 60's at Essendon, when we travelled down from the country to watch the 'rich' people walk across the tarmac to their flights - ah I can smell the nostalgia :)
1974 and 1975 we had many trips and saw many people off. In the “old days”
everyone turned up when someone left or arrived. Ive looked at old footage from my fathers video collection with us all leaning over (able to drop anything on tarmac) and we always waved the colored hanky (as did the person on the plane) so we knew the person was in their seat.. as if they could get list between security and the plane…joys of the process😂😂😂😂
…. a contrast to today where if youre lucky someone even notices youve left the house in the taxi to the airport… let alone picks you up!!!!!

I have reread this but not sure what you are getting at. The agreement between Feds and States from the start was for the biosecurity act to be used to control external border, and states would run quarantine. How does that tweet change this?

I agree all the screeching premiers will just slap quarantine on people anyway they like regardless, with no warning probably…

Scomo must have something up his sleeve, as if the above is the case he will look like the biggest douche in the world. He won't allow that to happen.

Listening to ABC radio Darwin drive show this evening, and consistent with the Fairfax article posted upthread AJ told the host to expect a final decision on QF DRW-LHR routing by mid October, for a Dec 2021 commencement. Confirmation dependent on finalisation of pax movement arrangements within DRW terminal - specifically the INT/DOM interface setup to manage inbound pax and also the lounge experience.

Should it not work out he confirmed the alternative is MEL-SIN-LHR, but he sounded pretty optimistic and confirmed the intention is to operate the route via DRW until at least April 2022. Also to expect increased DOM capacity to/from DRW to complement.

Finally, he confirmed support for a similar arrangement to that at PER where pax can choose to just fly the INT sector, or break their journey at DRW and have a Top End mini break pre/post their DOM leg

So it looks like all arrival caps might be scrapped and home quarantine in full force at 80% national average (sometime early November) and not Dec 1 as outlined yesterday by NSW Premier. Some key points below.
'
''Speaking in Washington earlier this week, the Prime Minister confirmed an announcement was imminent.

“We will see our international borders, particularly for Australians to leave and return and Australians who are overseas and have been vaccinated to return, and that will occur before the end of the year,’’ he said.

“It could happen well before that. I mean, right now we have reached a point where half of our adult population, aged over 16, has been double vaccinated. Three quarters of them have had their first vaccination. In our older population, those rates are already much higher, over ninety per cent. And, so, with the vaccines, that is improving our resilience, and we’ll be able to open up those borders.''

''One of the most hated bans on freedom imposed on Australians since the pandemic began will be lifted with the Prime Minister set to announce an end to international border closures as some states move towards a seven-day home quarantine plan for international travellers.
The international arrival caps agreed to by the national cabinet are also likely to be scrapped in states embracing the seven-day home quarantine option as soon as the 80 per cent double dosed milestone is reached.

NSW is likely to be first cab off the rank with flights overseas and the Victorian premier is also in talks with the PM over international travel bans lifting.''

It actually looks like the PM is now like I am being hated for the travel bans so need to announce an end ASAP.

Scomo says an announcement is imminent. Maybe this Friday at National Cabinet

Tick tock for the other states... as a resident are you going to be denied boarding the "living with Covid" international service?

I think its more likely the returning which will be the problem to be discussed at National Cabinet.
Especially for the flights back to DRW. If you're not stopping in DRW or continuing onto MEL, how will the other passengers be dealt with? Will they fly from DRW on regular domestic services or on special "international" flights flying those domestic routes or fly onto MEL and then take a special international flight from there to e.g. ADL, BNE etc?

The positive thing about "international" flights from MEL to say ADL is that they could pickup passengers from say SIN-MEL flights and flights from other airlines as well to make them viable.

If they don't want international arrivals mixing with purely domestic passengers then special "International" flights on domestic routes will be needed.

They won't do 'international' domestic flights.

I'm in favour of continuing passengers wearing full body condoms with a flashing light and a sign around their chest stating 'potential COVID infected person that has travelled internationally'.

Lots of complications, but really the path through is straight-forward.

MEL-ADL will not advance the QF9/10 position, it will just add a stop, as they still have to transit in either DRW/SIN. Pax from SA will (if allowed out) likely have to fly to MEL/SYD to join QF 1 or 9.

Ex-SYD will be fairly easy up until those returning need a place to stay or a way to transit to say QLD/WA. The absence of caps by December (for SYD at least) will add volume to this scenario, and hence we will probably see a move to go home and isolate until a negative test returned (1-2 days).

As things stand, the complications for other states will only be sorted after NSW starts taking more arrivals and facilitating more departures as it will then become front and centre for those other states.

Might be a bit off topic.. but here's an emotional video of two long distance couple reuniting after battling border closures. I am sure this would resonate with people having family members apart as well in this forum.

Me personally, 19 months separated from fiancé so far. T-60 days (approx.) and counting down till I can physically hold her again.

nice video but honestly i have been on one end or the other of that situation probably double figures now, why the hell is she sitting waiting on him, for me and mine its always been waiting right at the other side of 'dont go through here or you will get arrested' line lol :)

Q re home quarantining on return from OS travel....how do you get to your home from the airport if you don't have anyone to pick you up in a private car? Uber? taxi? Presumably public transport is out of the Q!

still to be finalised i think, i was told on the phone by QF that currently you are still allowed to transit, because i want to finish up in CBR and obvs its only the capital so no flights really come here >.<

I hope this so called imminent announcement gives some concrete details and isn't the rubbish we have been fed so far about "borders will open at 80%" which means absolutely nothing.

For weeks now we keep hearing "borders will open" which personally drives me mad because this doesn't tell us who would be allowed in, where people are allowed in from, can Aussie citizens who are not residing in Oz quarantine at home, if people are allowed to quarantine in a house with family/friends do the others also need to quarantine, what do people do in terms of transport from airport to home? How are vax vs unvaxxed separated at the airport? how long is quarantine etc, etc, etc.

Being based in London, coming back home to Melbourne would involves one or two stops on the way - and this alone complicates everything the way things are going.

Christmas is less than 3 months away. Scomo needs to pull his finger out, make a decision and allow travellers, airlines and airports time to plan. This is beyond ridiculous.

You are not going to heat the system. There will be nothing firm before the national cabinet this week.

I wonder how quickly it takes airlines to mobilize aircraft to refly routes prior to the Delta outbreak travel caps.

For argument sake, say they announce a firm date next week, Could airlines mobilize aircraft in 1 month?
