hi all,
been going through this thread and it appears that everyone who has an amex already and also applied for the velocity amex got their points bonus.

are there guys here who have also had similar success for the platinum charge card? i'm keen to give the 120k MR bonus promo a go but would like to hear back about the success of others before risking the $1200 sign up fee!

How many Amex cards do you have? I think I've read somewhere here that if you already have 2, then 3 is a no-go. Happy to be corrected.

I'd say go for it anyway - spend the required $1,000 asap - take up the $200 travel credit - then if the 120,000 bonus points don't appear simply cancel the card, AMEX will refund the $1200 annual fee, usually in full within the first month or else pro-rata. Nothing to loose, really...

if we count bank issued amex cards then i've long exceeded the 3.
if we don't then up till recently i still had the DJ amex, another plain amex card i had sitting around fee free for life that i never used both of which i cancelled before applying for the velocity amex for which i got points for.
if all those amex issued cards above counted then i suppose the velocity would've already been my 3rd in the last 12 months?

sounds like a plan - if i did that i probably won't try to use the $200 travel credit lest they use that against me when i request for a refund of fees/early cancellation. the sign on bonus now is truly massive... 120kMR - if i get it in time to combine with the ongoing MR - SPG - AA transfer that would equate to 90k AA which easily covers the 1200$ fee... once the free flight and travel credit get included as well it sure makes it worthwhile.. if i get the bonus that is

Has anyone had the Velocity Amex cancelled, then rejoined to get the sign up bonus?

I cancelled my card about 1.5 months ago now simply because I no longer needed it and now there is that huge 100K points bonus .. anyone gone through same situation, took the plunge and got points?

Got the Mrs to cancel hers a few months ago and signed up to the 110k offer but have been told my AMEX after I contacted them when the points didn't appear in the first statement that she will not be eligible since we held the card in the past 12 months.. Never happened before so maybe they are cracking down on this?

I will wait for next months statement and if the points don't appear, will pursue cancellation and the $349 fee.

Does the new account have the same number as the previous account? Sometimes they don't close the account for a few months, and simply reopen it if you apply the same account again. that could be the reason that Mrs doesn't get the points.

I just applied for the Velocity Plat and looks like my application got referred, didn't get an instant response (is that normal?)

Anyone had that and still got the points to credit? I'm guessing this means a human looks at it rather than just the auto-system so may block the points because I already have the Plat Edge?

Im in the situation like you as well. I applied the plat edge earlier this yr. When I applied the velocity plat online, I didnt get approve straight away. Had to wait for a few days for it to get approved. So I think they might have someone checked it manually. I think my chances of getting the bonuns are small now.

Now Im trying to spend my way up to the 1k requirement. Right now Im about half way there and still havent got the bonus. Will keep spending the next few weeks see how that goes.

Will update once I spent more than 1k.

I didn't get instant approval and no text to confirm the card was approved. But the card came in the post a few days later. FYI, I currently hold the amex reserve and I previously held the plat edge card. Oh and I also received the $110k points after $500 spend :)

Next question. How do you know the points have credited?
Do you link your new card to your current online account immediately? Or do you wait until the statement/until they post to Velocity?

I figure knowing straight away if it's going to work is an advantage (if I then choose to ring up and say "thanks but no thanks" before the annual fee gets charged on the first statement), but also is more of a giveaway that I already have a card if I link it to my online account?

You can log in to your Amex account to view points that are pending transfer to VFF.

Honestly not trying to be obtuse :-) my question is how? You need to have a login to do that, can you use the same one as for your existing cards without raising any issues about already holding one?

I didn't seem to have the option to link the velocity card to my existing account but that was probably because my existing account is linked to membership rewards whereas this is velocity. So from my experience, when I spent over the $500, the 110k points showed up against the transaction that brought the spend over the $500 i.e. the day after my spend. So, I knew well in advance. A couple of weeks later, I got charged the annual fee at the same time as my first statement was issued.

Theyll already know that you have a card, trust me. It says it in the letter you get with the card...

I'm sure they already do (I'm not actually expecting to outsmart a company like Amex!), maybe just paranoid

It makes me laugh that people even consider this. One of the first things they will do to assess your application (automatically) is to see if they already have you on file, either as a customer or a past customer (bearing in mind they have to legally keep your records for 7 years from closure). This is because for most credit providers their own records provide a much better indication of whether you make your payments on time (credit reports dont yet include this) which is THE #1 credit risk predictor.

So regardless of whther you say you have a card or not they will have tried to match you to their records, thats guaranteed.

I have been able to link the new Velocity Platinum card to my husband's Amex Account. His Amex Reserve and Platinum Edge ( supplementary card to my account) are all linked and available to view with one log in. The 110,000 bonus points arrived after $500 spend, another successful sign up although an existing cardholder.

just an update - received my plat charge card 3 days ago, immediately put a few k spend and have today received the 120k sign up bonus
