Public Transport to our airports - what's cheapest?

You woudn't couldn't. A lot of trains don't stop there
Coming from the airport (which is the topic of this thread) none of the trains stop there.

Having said that if you were transferring between a southern/south western line (not the airport line, obviously) and one of the western lines or vice versa, not sure why you'd go all the way into Central to make the transfer instead of Redfern.

Because even though the map says Redfern is a stop for the non airport lines, a lot (some) of trains on those line don't stop at Redfern in both directions for some reason. I've been caught out several times thinking that the train will stop at Redfern when it didn't . So the traveler would have to make sure Redfern is a stop. Basically more options at Central.

OT and mute point going to/from SYD, but I’m scratching my head what lines that pass through Redfern station don’t stop there (other than maybe some of the express inter-urban trains that you might be able to get on at Strathfield but “next stop Central”)?

I think a lot of the express trains (not just intercity trains) used to bypass Redfern back in the days when it was the slums (10-15 years ago).

Since it's been gentrified with a lot of business and residential developments, I think all suburban trains stop there as it's now a major centre.

Even then, pretty much all trains stopped at Redfern - except maybe the XPT and Southern Aurora / Daylight Express (showing my age now).

But back to topic, if for some reason someone didn’t change from the 350 bus from T3 at Mascot station, there is a fairly regular 309 bus from Botany to Redfern station that you can change onto at Mascot Shops but it would probably still be quicker to get the airport train from Mascot to Central and backtrack.

I’m probably going to take one for the team and get the 350 all the way home next week. SYD+1 is enjoying the new Gold Opal and now “Seniors” Myki….😔

Thanks didn't know about that, so I looked at the 309 bus timetable, runs every 5 minutes(!), 17 min Redfern to Mascot Shops and then quite a walk to terminal. Not plan A but handy to know of if the airport line is down.

What could be cheaper then doing what a lot of people in CBR have been doing for the past 2ish years...

In mid 2020, Transport Canberra, in an effort to "protect drivers from covid", stopped accepting cash on board buses, blocked off the front seats and stopped using the front door for boarding (unless you had a wheelchair and required the ramp). When this happened, the drivers were instructed to treat anyone not paying as a transfer.
Ticket machines, to recharge a my way card or pay for a ticket, are only available at light rail stops and "some" bus interchanges. They expect people to have my way cards and recharge themselves (they come with a 5% discount on travel if you recharge with autoload or bpay).

They relaxed the covid related changes last September (started using the front door and seats again), but they still haven't, and likely won't, resume using cash payment on board.
This has led to a large amount of people (especially students) just walking on and claiming they don't have a card or that is isn't working, and the drivers just treat it as a transfer and wave you on.

It would not surprise me if I saw people get on the R3 to the airport and just say "I don't have a card" and not pay.

Copenhagen is quite a relaxed city when it comes to public transport fare paying - even to/from airport

It is possible to walk onto the metro and walk off without paying (to/from airport) - there are no barriers.

The Copenhagen card which include public transport to/from airport + entrance to attractions do not require any tap on tap off. It took me a while to realise there is no where to tap.

I suspect there are random inspections but I have not seem them in the 8 days I've been here. (Where there are ticket inspections it will be on trains where a seat reservation is required - outstation places

Copenhagen airport - metro - central = 36DKK = $9AUD

When we took the train from Copenhagen to Malmo, we had our tickets inspected

Ah, that comment was in the context of 350 bus from T3 then change at Mascot shops for the 309 to Redfern. The reverse should work but I’d still be thinking train to/from Mascot.

Frankfurt, in fact Germany in general doesn't have barriers. So same, it is possible to get to/from airport without paying. Travelled between FRA and downtown Frankfurt (and back) 3 times in the last year and of those 6 journey, inspectors have checked tickets three times.

…and the fines are hefty for fare evasion. Hence the lack of barriers. NL is generally the same.

Did this on Tue. Tedious with luggage - didn’t help that we boarded T3 around 3pm, so had early departing workers and after school crowd (and it was crowded most of the way). But it did drop us off around the corner from home. All for $3.93 and $1.96 😂…. (v ~$35 minimum in Uber).

The meandering route takes ~1 hr (scheduled for ~50 mins) but we did get a nice view of Maroubra Beach along the way… The old 400 bus was a more direct route but didn’t stop near home. For us, otherwise is two trains (or 1 bus and two trains) which takes almost as long as the 350. Hence normally take the 15-20min Uber/Taxi ride.

The 350 runs about every 10 mins from T3 to Bondi Junction. Mid morning thru to before 2pm is probably the sweet spot.

Anyone going to city, the 420 to Mascot station and train from there would be the go.

Frankfurt, in fact Germany in general doesn't have barriers.

But most Germans are fairly compliant.
And they do have plain clothes inspectors watching people validate at the tag points.

On a week long trip there a few years back saw two fare evaders grabbed and put into submission wrist locks.

350 or 420 to/from Mascot.

If arriving/ departing Intl Airport, the 420 to/from Banksia or Rockdale can be quicker.

Yes I did that recently just in case I'm stuck in traffic on the way from Mascot via Domestic...
