Public Transport to our airports - what's cheapest?

Yep, have done that before, gotten to bus from int/dom to Bondi Junction, and then the train to Circular.
Edit: I don't see them getting rid of the fee/take back ops.
In 2030, 7 more years, the end of contract comes up, and the NSW govt has an option to take back the operation of the airport line.
But I don't think they will do that, they probably will continue to let the airport train station run it, and pay the NSW govt a hefty commission.
Half maybe.
===
NSW govt put in $700m for the airport link line, and the private business only $200m, and yet, in the 23 years, it has made so much money for both of them.
Millions (***$110m a year, just checked with wiki), as most overseas incoming travellers will just use the train, or uber/taxis.
Or tbus to get from int to dom terminal, or vv.

Why go all the way to Bondi Junction? Getting off at Maxcot and taking the train from there would save you heaps of time.
Probably a reference to the now discontinued 400 express bus. There are better options now to get to the city on one bus plus train.

Its cheaper by bus the whole way to Bondi Junction, as its all one journey.
The way Opal works, is the first sector charges the bus fare, under 3 kms, (dom to Mascot for you) and then the train fare, will be added on, but then, you get a credit for mode transfer, of a discount of $2, ... for the bus and train fare(ing) system.
Where as by bus to Bondi Junction, its all 8 km bus fare, (straight).
And then the bus to Circular Quay, or as close to it, (haven't gotten the bus there since the light rail came in), so not sure now how far the bus will get to Circular Quay itself.
Bit troublesome and a long ride, but, I always get out to Bondi Junction, though must admit, the journey is very long, via East Gardens and also very windy and can give dizzy spells, but still, I avoid Redfern, (grin), don't ask.
Used to go out to Burwood too, then get the train, if going to Central.
But this was all pre the split of the 350, when that bus used to go all the way from Burwood to Bondi Junction, now I think another bus does the trip from int to Burwood, and the 350 does int to dom to Bondi Junction.
Sorry for the waffly.

Bus 3 km fare, dom - Mascot - $3.20/$2.24 (peak and off peak)
Bus 3 km - 8 km, dom - Bondi Junction - $3.93/$2.75
Train under 10 km fare, Mascot train station to Central/Circular Quay - $3.79/$2.65
If you add the bus 3 km fare and the train, $6.99 - $2 transfer discount = $4.99 or off peak $4.89 - $2 transfer discount = $2.89
Bus and train $4.99 and $2.89
All bus $3.93 and $2.75:rolleyes:o_O

Geez, I've done that once (on 400 from Bondi Jct to Dom) just to see what it was like.

Wouldn't be doing it again, even if I could (now 350 bus?). I have the Gold Opal too, but not unlimited amounts of time to waste.
The 350 takes a very circuitous route but drops off/picks up around the corner from home and SYD+1 is now the proud owner of a Gold Opal. I’m dreading the inevitable “let’s take the bus”…😔

Heh!
I guess for some, the short trip to Mascot train station from SYD KSA T1/T2 and then the train to where they have to go to, would be the fastest, and the most ideal.
But by the time the train from the airport gets to Mascot Train Station, it can get chockers full, with people with large suitcases standing near the doors.
Getting of the 350 or the 420 at the nearest non premium (airport) train station, is best, if a person travels HLO.
If with bags, best to get an uber/taxi to where you have to go, faster, pricier yes, but faster and less "mingling with the plebs".
Granted that esp the SYD taxis from the airport can suck you dry financially, but its the fastest way around.
Or rent a car, I don't drive, and don't know anyone in Sydney, so its buses all the way.

Edit: just saw the new ticket reader for Adelaide, those of you who have used AdelaideMetro tix in the past, will know the old one, with the slot for the black strip tix to be inserted at the top, its all gone on some buses.
As I mentioned up thread, the new Metrocard readers will also read credit cards.
Not on the screen, but on the angled spot below the screen.

I think you might find Redfern has changed a bit. How long ago are you thinking?

Also unless staying in Redfern why would you get off there? Stay on the train until it gets to Central (better place change trains if needed as more lines), major bus interchange and light rail.

If coming from the airport or Mascot station, probably quite difficult to get off the train at Redfern anyway. 🤣

I also did that once (in reverse to Bondi) to check out some wine in kemenys. Was a Long day (and yes I had to open a bottle when I got home).

We have a Dan Murphy’s in BJ now, so a bit easier to get to than Kemmenys!

I regularly take the bus (420/350) to and from the Dom/Int terminal, taking the train to/from Central/Mascot. Saving the airport access penalty fee and on a Gold Opal. It can add an extra 20 minutes particularly when I am pulling my suitcase and not travelling HLO. I recently had a dream run, walked out of T3 straight on to the bus, down the 2 x lifts to Mascot Station, straight on to an approaching train. My travelling companion paid the access fee and went straight to Central on the train from T3. I arrived exactly 12 minutes after my companion. It comes down to what is your time worth. I, on one occasion long ago, did Bondi Junction to the airport on the bus (after taking the train to BJ), but I only did it once. Took too long, too many people and too many stops and turns.

Would have been in the 1990s/2000s.
Round about the time of Olympics in SYD.
Heard about Little Eveliegh St and its "...".
Granted its a long time.
Havent flown a lot since covid, but now slowly putting my paws back into being a backseat pilot
Got some flights coming up in Jul and Dec to NZ.

Going back to the gist of this thread:
They say that NZ is going to combine all their different public transport prepaid tix into one, or be able to use visa/mastercard.
I have got 3 different tix, ie, Hop, Snapper and Metrocard to use up the balances of each.
As I don't live in NZ, (I used to visit a lot), it would not be possible to get a refund on these prepaid public transport cards, so have to use them up to 2025.
And then surrender them, but just mention I don't have an NZ bank account for the ticket value to be refunded, so they can just keep the card.

Ah nice! When I lived there I had to trek up to Double Bay to go to Dans.

Although to be fair, that is probably the best Dans in the country.
