While the skybus is 25mins 90-95% of the time, its unpredictable - unlike rail and only has a single drop off at southern cross which is fairly useless for a lot of business people who continue to take cabs. Whereas in SYD i frequently take the train into the city as you can jump off at the closest station and its a short walk to the office.

By 2030 + the skybus, cabs etc will undoubtedly take longer and is just not competitive on a global stage.

Today's update, blame the ALC: Deputy premier blames Melbourne Airport for delay in completion of airport rail

New York if you are happy to change trains.

Absolutely for JFK have done it many many times and it is normal subway + aitrain so inexpensive.

Also true for EWR (even though that is in NJ, and requires subway + NJ Transit + Airtrain from Manhattan (unless your journey starts at Penn Station).

Unfortunately, no subway to LGA.

San Francisco (SFO) has air train + BART to downtown.

Gave up on the Jamaica line. I think someone also mentioned upthread about this.
Will report back. SYD+1 is adamant that we’re getting PT to downtown…(bloody SF retirees…).

If you are going to mid-town, around Penn Station/Empire State Building, the fastest way into Manhattan is the JFK Airtrain to Jamaica station, from where the LIRR runs about every 10-15 minutes to Penn Station (20 min ride). Definitely check into this if you're staying close to that area and don't need to further transfer to the subway.

For actual NYC downtown, that is, Lower Manhattan, the "A" train route from Howard Beach is more convenient, albeit more crowded than LIRR.

Yep. Heading to East Village this trip.

Personally, I don’t mind Taxi/Uber to/from LGA….

As I stay on the Lower East Side I always get train from Howard Beach, change at J St Metro to Delancy/Essex. It is also a simpler transition from air train to the subway, its easy to miss the ticketing machines at Jamaica.

It is a cheap option during peak times where traffic can be a nightmare. Outside of peak, a taxi will get you there in 20 mins.

The airport doesn't want a train link and placing the possible train station above ground is a joke! Even the airport suggested it should be underground
Agree on that point - crazy not building a station that can handle through running.

On the earlier point about needing 15 minute express trains.
That would be nice but IMHO a reliable 30-40 minute service but with high frequency would be better / cheaper. Don't care about the route as long as it is reliable and predictable.
With the time you currently need to allow at present for freeway traffic vagaries, and then allowing time at the airport for check-in, security plus contingencies, saving 15 or 20 minutes on a the train is incidental.

Not pie in the sky at all - A better solution that people will use, the current "solution" is pathetic at best

Given the current rail link is going to cost $8-13bn to be above ground....

Sydney and London are much faster solutions than driving

Either way I would never ever use it, nor would anyone I know

I am not sure it will be as bad as you make out. I guess the proof will be in the pudding (That’s If it happens and if they can meet the targetted 30 mins to CBD). As it is supposed to run through the metro tunnel it will provide a through service to the SE, and cover more of the CBD than skybus or a direct service that terminates at Southern X. It also should have good connections to the Geelong/ Ballarat/ Bendigo at Sunshine, and to the western suburbs at Footscray.

I suspect the trouble with some of the proposed direct paths is the geography (and geology) of the Maribyrnong River valley, it's all over the place. Go further east of the valley and it's largely duplicative of the Craigeburn line.

Meanwhile, I did look at the famed 901 bus when I arrived a few weeks ago on a Saturday evening. I mean it works so so well. It run's every half hour, the train runs every half hour and the schedules are coordinated so well, that the transition to the train is entirely stress free, you get 23 minutes to make that connection from bus to train. Wonderful! 🤷‍♂️
