Public Transport to our airports - what's cheapest?

Do you have an Android phone?
I see this on the website:

"Seniors from other states aren't eligible for a Seniors myki, but can travel with a Concession myki".

Does anyone know if this can be added to the App on Android?

Also, I presume you just can't use a credit card (like you can with Opal in NSW)?

Customer trials underway:
The use of the word vibrant for public transport ticketing is immensely annoying. Ticketing needs to be functional, I don’t need an “experience” tapping a card against a reader.

Looks like the 420 also works (on its way to T1).

From SYD International (T1) often better to take the 420 to Banksia or Rockdale (more frequent trains at times), then the T4 Eastern Suburbs line to the city.

It's also possible, though by no means easy, to walk to Wolli Creek.

Has anyone done the train + 292 to Perth T3/T4 yet?

Yep, caught it about a week ago. Unfortunately the timing of the bus meant I was sprinting down the stairs to make the train, which isn't possible if you have any luggage.

I think there should be a real time passenger display at the airport to show the timing of the next bus, but otherwise it works well since the train station is too far of a walk for most people

I need to get from MEL to Heidelburg Heights on a Sunday morning and return Tuesday morning.

Is there a reasonable public transport option or should I be looking at Uber, Taxi or something else?

Thanks is advance.

You can load a Concession Myki onto your Android.

The biggest difference between General Concession and Seniors is free weekend travel for the latter.

There are no "reasonable" PTV options. You are looking at two hours by Public transport - even skybus.

Some get a 901 bus to Broadmeadows central Shopping Centre and get a taxi/uber from there.

I would have thought an Uber on a Sunday would be the cheapest/quickest trade off.

As per @serfty, trying to get PTV options across town that don’t go via Southern Cross would be hard?

That's not far from where I live. I take a taxi (or park off airport).
Heidelberg Height is not close to rail, so needs a bus. If some one could pick you up from a train station would be a little easier.
Train to Heidelberg from Spencer St/Southern cross after Skbus. Or serfty's 901 Broadmeadows route to Southern Cross station.

Thanks @serfty; but I get a message that my CC doesn't support/allow connection to Google Wallet.

I guess I'll just need to buy a physical card or get an Uber

Since I'm living in Rome for the time being, I can let you know that from Fiumicino FCO you can get a local train (rather than the Leonardo Express) for about half the price that may be close to your accommodation and a cheaper taxi ride or where you can make a transfer if staying elsewhere in the general vicinity. The main stops of interest: Trastevere (with connections to north of Rome on FL3 & some FL5); Ostiense (good for Aventine, Colloseo areas as well as Metro B) Tiburtina (lots of connections by train and regional bus and long distance buses as well as Metro B again) Trenitalia seems to be spending a lot of money on its stations at the moment, with better lighting and wayfinding; so things are improving. Also the Frecciarossa (high speed train) now goes to the airport with connections to Florence and Naples - though there's not a lot of options. It may be better for getting to the airport.
From Ciampino CIA (hello Ryanair and Wizz) you can take Metro A to Cinecittà and then a 520 bus (if you're keen and travel for €1.50), which I've done a few times without too much difficulty - the bus does get caught in traffic in peak hour but it keeps moving. There is also a FS bus that takes you to Ciampino proper with train to Termini (I think about €3 - but I haven't tried it) . Finally there are private buses, but my neighbours have horror stories about buses waiting to be filled up, etc.

Just a note that for some strange reason the trenitalia app is not available on the Australian Apple appstore. You can use 'trainline' or an equivalent to book from your phone rather than using ticket machines. Oddly enough you can get the Italo app as well as the Cotral app (if regional buses around Rome are your thing) from the Australian app store.

Not quite fare related but the first half of Sydney's long under construction Central Walk opened today providing escalator access and a new concourse for all the suburban platforms (second stage will add more escalators and new lifts, plus light rail connection, and finally the new Metro platforms will open in 2024)

Some vids and pics in this tweet thread.

If I'm staying in the Rome area, I usually stay at Ostia and take a Cotral bus from FCO for around €1.40 (forget the exact amount).

You can take the local train from Ostia to Roma Porta S. Paolo (a 30 minute trip) and on to Termini if you wish, for around around €1.50, as I recall.

If going into the city of Rome from FCO, I would take a Cotral bus to Ponte Galeria (around €1.40), and then a local train, as you have described, for €1.00. Saves the airport surcharge.

Obviously doesn't work if you have luggage, but works for me.

What’s with the blue carpet?

Thats over what will be the metro concourse.
Reportedly hiding some public artwork that's embedded into the floor.

Note also if you want to transfer to the airport line (Platform 23) - don't take Central Walk yet, as the only escalator to that platform goes down.
