Public Transport to our airports - what's cheapest?

The first trial train has ventured onto the tracks all the way through to the Airport Central Station so I think that it is still possible for the services to begin before July. I must say that station looks very flash from the glimpses shown on the videos.

It's a bit hard to work out when the first trains will run now. Latest OAG transparency report is putting the first trains by the end of July.

There have been some issues lately with specialist equipment and resources.

Yes, the website for the project has been posting inane articles about smoke testing in the tunnels, the Govt. funds involved etc but consistently declining to mention the opening date. I am sure it has been delayed to at least the end of July.

Clarifying Sydney; the 400 bus has been withdrawn and replaced by separate services - 350 and 420.

The 350 runs from Domestic to Bondi Junction (along a different route to the old 400).

The 420 runs from Mascot station to Burwood via Domestic and International. It also passes Rockdale (handy for interchange to and from Wollongong).

Normal Opal fares apply on each service. Seniors are well advised to get an Opal card because the $2.50 maximum fare (for one day) applies. It's one of Australia's best travel bargains. As one would expect the "gate pass" at the airport is always added regardless of the type of Opal.

During a recent visit to Sydney I confirmed there is a "special" train fare between Domestic and International that is a substantial saving on payint the gate pass twice. However, it is still more expensive than using Opal on the 420.

There is also the free "T-bus" between Domestic and International terminals.
I notice there’s some concessions on station access fees if you alight at Mascot, Green Square or each airport station

flat fee for both Adult and Concessions is charged:

  • Between an airport station and Green Square - station access fee is $9.84 (+ train fare)
  • Between an airport station and Mascot Station - station access fee is $7.44 (+ train fare)
  • Between Sydney Domestic Airport Station and Sydney International Airport Station - station access fee $4.00 (+ train fare)
cheaper than Uber haha

They currently are aiming for June, but that's not an official date, and is subject to delivery delays !

And obviously has been. And still no actual date.

Has there been any announcements on any shuttle service or like between Redcliffe Station and the Qantas terminals (T3/4). I understand it's about 1km otherwise.

Redcliffe station will form a train/bus interchange. I understand the design of the interchange includes scope for a shuttle service to T3 until the terminals are consolidated.

Also found a shortcut THROUGH the small park and then down the back of the buildings which got me to the back of Qantas HQ ..... and $10 on the sidewalk for my troubles !

Well, I just took the bus from PER to the city for $2.20 (Concession).

Hard to beat and quite quick.

But I do understand that many AFFers wouldn't do it...

And as per this thread you will soon have the option of the 292 bus plus Train.. all for the same 2 zone price.

Given fares are capped at 2 zones, it means you could get from Mandurah to the Airport on a 2 zone fare.

Darwin! That would take hours unless of course you did that before ~ 1992 🤣
They all took ages! Toowoomba was the most boring. Launceston was the most dangerous (walking next to freeway).. Darwin was just bloody sweaty.

Since that post I've done a few more! Burnie/Wynyard (the easiest - 5 mins), Townsville (easy - 15 mins to Mercure), Coolangatta (ok, few places to stop for a beer), Adelaide (do it regularly, 1 hour nice footpath).

I note it does not mention the bus services.
Not so much as a service but more an ordeal now. The 400 bus used to whizz past the back of my place but the nearest stops were 10 min walk in either direction. The new 350 picks up/drops off around the corner now but it’s close to 1 hr touring the south eastern beaches before heading to the Domestic airport. I might try it one day coming home if I land middle of the day.

One good thing with the 350 is you can get close to Mascot station and then let the train do the heavy lifting to the city or elsewhere… I‘ve seen the 350 waiting empty just outside QF baggage claim in T3.

I'm just trying to get to/from Mascot Station cheaply - the walk has become somewhat more of an obstacle course. (Looking to do this next month).

From domestic, definitely the 350 bus. There’s a stop near the hotels and then a short stroll to Mascot.

Looks like the 420 also works (on its way to T1).

Edit:
1. sorry, the 2nd screen shot is the 420 route (pic got cropped for some reason). Weirdly, it was showing a few minutes quicker than the 350 but you grab whatever come first.
2. unfortunately, from T1 it looks like the 420 loops around the domestic terminal road before heading towards Mascot station - it take the hit on train instead of that!
