Hi All

Just wanted to share a little win I had yesterday.

Was checking in my grandmother at SCL for QF28 to SYD, and just asked casually what the cost to upgrade her to W would be. Was told US$600. Thought id ask the logical next question, and see what the cost to upgrade her to J would be. Answer, US$1000. She was very keen to try business class and had no issue with that, as she paid A$1800 for her return so effectively got a Y and J return trip for $2800.

Might have ruined her future travel experiences, but for the approx 14 hours across to SYD, it was a great experience for her. Also will help her with her travel recovery.

The MCO that I got as the receipt has the type of service as "Promo Upgrade Scheme". It was apparently the last J seat available too.

Not sure how replicable this is elsewhere, but Im happy with it even if it is a one off.

We did that on BA-operated flight (with our QF code share) to upgrade from economy to J from HKG to LHR last year for our honeymoon. Similar thing printed on the ticket and not that expensive.

Ive had that before on QF 98 from HKG to BNE. 6000 hkd at check in Y-J (around 750 AUD back then) The check in girl even had a big excel sheet showing all the different destinations QF fly to and upgrade costs. Maybe theyre more willing to allow paid upgrade at non aussie ports.

On a recent flight from AUH to MEL on Etihad I upgraded from J to F for €400, or just over $A500, at checkin. My travel agent son-in-law tells me upgrades like this are not uncommon if seats are available so close to departure. I did the same thing from MEL to AUH at around $800.

Do you earn points and SC for your original booking or the new class you've upgraded to?

You earn points as per the original booking, in theory!

I have paid for upgrades to Club Euro on BA when they offered it online a few days before the flight and these have earned me J class SC and points... Perhaps this may be different to upgrades at checkin?

It is different, the OP is talking about QF and that is what I was responding to in terms of an answer, other airlines will no doubt have different policies but for QF, its as booked, not as flown.

Even for paid upgrades? That's a bit coughpy if you ask me. Fair enough if you get an op-up, but if you pay for the upgrade at check in shouldn't your earn points and SCs for the class you've paid to upgrade to?

Depends on how you've paid. Points upgrades also earn as per booked fares. Why should paid by cash upgrades be different to paid by points upgrades?

Upgrades at the airport using the special upgrade price just give yoiu a nicer seat and meal, its made clear at most places on the sign advertising its available and has been reported here in the past.

We were originally in economy, upgraded to J per my previous post. Originally credited with economy points and sc. when I got back to Australia I fought, and won, for my extra points and sc. It ended up that we got all the extra points and sc. I had to talk to both BA and QF to get it sorted.

If it's a re-grade (Which I suspect OD paid upgrades are), then you'll earn original points and SC's.

If it's a re-issue (as in a ticket re-issue) you should earn full points and SC for the class you've been re-issued into.

Typically, they'll only re-issue a ticket in line with regular change fees. I have been re-graded before, and my FF statement shows it as an upgrade (like a points one would be) and original points/SC's for Economy.

Yes, thinking back they did reissue our tickets. That was part of the problem. Qantas were unable to locate us on the flight ...

For a data point but slightly OT I upgraded on BA SEA-LHR from W to J during their recent promo but only got economy SC's and points to the QF program. Thought about fighting for the points but I was just happy with the cheap upgrade.

I had some issues with that as well.

If the airlines changes your ticket and re-issues it in the new booking class you will get the points and SC for the upgraded class automatically. This happens if you buy a payed upgrade with BA before you fly.

If you buy your upgrade at the airport there is usually a problem. The original ticket is not touched so it pops up as booked in the original class.
So it is a bit of a lottery and the way how it is treated: If they are "lazy" and do not touch the original ticket you will automatically get the original SCs. If they reissue the ticket you will get the upgraded SCs. This is quite technical and I think that most travellers won't see any difference.

I had some discussions with QFF about an upgrade. T&C say that if you upgrade with points you will get SC/Points as originally booked. This also means that you should get points/SC for the upgraded class if you pay in cash, no matter how the upgrade is processed.

So T&C are quite clear, but QFF does argue a bit. Quoting their T&C resulted in posting the

im glad I'm not the only one.....

The T&C's are quite clear, but not according to QF, as they seem to invent any meaning they like to suit their circumstances......

They also do like to argue, but when they are also the decision maker, it makes it exceptionally difficult to obtain a fair outcome. I'm glad it worked out for you as it did for me, but our methods couldnt have been more different. I had to have an external authority review the matter and before heavily hinting that they would be finding in my favour, QF decided to settle for what I initially asked for. Crazy!

Any experiences ex HKG on QF?
Did you see post #3?

I did not think Qantas had this type of policy. Cash upgrades have never been to me unless you have to specifically ask for them.

Earlier this year it was indicated to us that a paid upgrade, from J, would have been considered ex HKG but there were no F seats available.
