Putting Amex Into credit?

I asked Amex if I could put card into credit in anticipation for a spend that would exceed my limit @p--and--t and was told I would be "flagged" and account suspended/closed.
Only suggestion given was to call them before doing it explaining the spend, with no guarantee it would be allowed.

As mentioned in other threads, tricky to increase credit limit now retired.

AMEX is one card i gave never had. Just the big 4 and Diners.

Diners I loved that card. A hex on NAB

Yeah don't put AMEX into credit even paying off an amount mid-cycle and then maxing the card out again can cause problems

As my pay cycle date is today, spoke to Amex and have paid this month's outstanding balance via payID.
Although I am not in credit, it will allow me to do my spend on flights ( for DSC of course!) and not go over my limit.

How so? Have done this before with AMEX and had no issues.

Have seen many many reviews that Amex will put your account on hold/ask for financial details for doing this, mainly with a charge card, but also on credit cards.

I don't do anything outside of the box with Amex as I never want to jump through hoops with them

Fair enough. Admittedly when I’ve done this in the past, I contacted them to query and advise my intentions. Never had any issues but perhaps that’s because they knew what I was up to?

I have made payments many a times out of cycle but always within the limit and had no problem whatsoever with my charge card. Curious to understand , what could be the issue if I put through multiple payments into my charge card ahead of the billing cycle ?

No idea sorry but Amex is one of the worst/best for keeping an eye on customers and risk flags

I’ve never seen more heard of this from Amex with payments out of cycle, especially on an existing charge card.
It can happen in a new charge card’s first 6 months of life, or so, as they develop a spending history for you.
The biggest Amex risk is putting accounts in credit. Some people have been fine but it’s a very risky move with Amex.

I understand that putting it into credit may cause problems, however I’ve been told explicitly by support to pay off some balance mid cycle after getting the “future payments may be declined” email on my plat. The email even suggests making a payment to avoid declines, so not sure why this can cause problems.

Amex can be a bit dicey with cards going into credit. Your call. And welcome to AFF

I put my card into credit often, but only a small amount

From my experience, the thing that gets your account flagged (and card disabled) is processing a transaction (or multiple within a single day) for greater than your credit limit, even if you have the funds available.

But otherwise I can make a transaction, pay it off the next day, make another transaction and keep repeating all within a month.

We just did this on Amex’s advice. Had 2 F tickets to purchase, transaction didn’t go through. Called Amex and they actually advised us to put the account into credit. Is this new? We did so, it all went through, tickets issued etc etc. Now we know what our Plat Charge Card credit limit seems to be. Interestingly it’s much much less than it was a few years ago.

Plat charge is different, but if they have told you to do it then I guess it’s ok.
You can check your “limit” yourself on the app or on the website, too, btw.
Don’t play with it too much or it can trigger issues, I have heard anecdotally. They normally are pretty generous, I’ve tested 10 times higher than my highest ever monthly total and it will accept.

Maybe different for charge v credit card @bam71 ?
With my Ultimate credit card, I am skirting close to my limit this month (due to all my DSC bookings).
Knowing I have a few $k to come out before end of this billing cycle for an upcoming hotel stay, called them and their advice was to pay current amount owing early.
Makes sense but like others, don't want to get flagged.
