Putting Amex Into credit?

I rang them recently about this, as I wanted to buy some tickets that are about 50% over my limit. Their only suggestion was to try to raise the limit, which, as I'm only talking one purchase, I don't need.

I gave up on AMEX years ago and it seems nothing has changed. Why would anyone bother dealing with them when the credit card surcharge is so excessive (because of their charges to the merchant) and then you have to jump through hoops to use the card. The tail wagging the dog.
I guess that’s what funds our rewards which is why we prefer to use Amex over other cards in our wallet but agree now that those costs are being passed onto consumers … I guess there’s pause to consider.

As suggested earlier, can you pay one fare within limit, recharge and pay further fares. Paid for a car with Amex, applied for a one off credit increase which was denied. Accidently put card into credit however the card payment would not exceed the card limit. The credit balance made for a quicker processing time between Deb/Cred cycle but thoughtful about card hold.

Interesting.. I have plat CC velocity amex
Regularly pay mid cycle amounts and account often in credit up to a few hundred dollars — I like being debt free! …never had issue..
However, I have never charged more than my actual limit however in a single purchase.
Had the card 10 years.
🤔

No problem paying ahead of billing cycIe. On this occasion I repaid quicker than the merchant charges with two repayments sending my Amex into cash positive of double the credit limit without a charge being registered. The advice from Amex at the time was they do not like positive balances which can lead to an investigation and possibly a hold on the card. I'm talking tens of thousands not hundreds of dollars. Interestingly the card would only allow the merchant a charge to the card limit even though there was double credit available.

I’ve done it in the past with Explorer rapidly spending up to the limit and paying it down multiple times during the cycle. I’ve now since switched to a charge card so don’t need to do this anymore. Though the US charge cards seem much more generous with their shadow limit. I got a call recently from my US account manager reckons I can be supported up to 4x+ what the AU charge cards can go to. I’m not interested as I won’t take the FX risk but it did get me thinking …

Well... according to AMEX, my Qantas Ultimate is suddenly/somehow almost $5400 in credit. No idea how that happened?? Perhaps there will be a correction in the next 24 hours, but with impending OS travel.... wish me luck 🤞

Thankfully there was a correction overnight. All good now.

Yeah don't put AMEX into credit even paying off an amount mid-cycle and then maxing the card out again can cause problems :(
Not long ago we purchased J class flights using our Amex business cards. Well under other spends we’ve done but weirdly received an email asking us to make a deposit to reduce the amount in debit. We always pay on time and their ‘spend limit’ checker said the amount was fine (a business Amex that has no credit limit) so I don’t know what the random issue was.

That's new to me :(

Sounds like you used the spend limit checker prior to booking the tickets ?

I've heard that is a big red flag TBH

Maybe it checks your credit rating? I didn't check it this time just have randomly with similar amounts. And I've spent more than the flight but with the ATO so maybe that doesn't create any concern for them as maybe a card fraud.

No, it doesn’t access you credit rating I’m pretty sure. The way they police their charge cards is very weird but mostly predictable. If I was going to do a big purchase and check my comfort limit prior, I’d check 6 months out or so if possible.
