Putting elite status bag tag onto carry on. Yay or Nay?

I wouldn't use elite tags on hand luggage unless that was the only thing I had to identify my bag...especially if there's a risk of it being put into checked luggage. If not, then it's a definite no from me. It's so wanky!
I saw peak tag wank at New Pelion Hut this winter. One of the people on an expensive Tas Walking Company private Overland Track walk had attached his Qantas tag to his backpack. This is on a 6 walk where the only luggage checking is conducted by hungry possums and wily currawongs!

This actually saved me once. Someone had the same backpack in the overhead bin, I was wanting to get off last as the captain wanted to say gday (friend). When this other couple picked up my identical bag, the wife went ‘hold on your not a gold’, oh whoops…put back my bag and got his.

It’s a VA tag so not sure if that’s smaller compared to whatever QF offers.

Obviously not a reason to attach a Qtag to a carry on bag anymore (or maybe I'm hallucinating and it never was) but I thought I remember long ago when Qtags were introduced, they could provide easy and quick access to lounges? Also let Qantas keep track of you if they ever needed to track you down? Of course that'd necessitate Qtags hard-coded to the owner which isn't the case so I don't think I'm correct.

Location tracking would be useful though. PA announcement: "Can Mr. Smith please hurry the f up and finish eating your McDonald's and proceed to gate 3"

You're hallucinating. Qtags are not 'attached' to an individual, so they can't get you lounge access.

Nor would the tags track you around the airport. There might be some instances where it could be handy such as seeing if someone is lounging around or on their way to the gate (before the personal page is done). But the infra & system needed for that is probably prohibitively expensive to the benefits and not everyone would even want to be tracked that way (OK, your phone is already tracked, etc, but adding more than necessary?).

I have never understood the disdain for people with Q tags on their hand luggage.
There's a bit of a no true scotsman mentality to those who travel enough to gain status. It's pretty prevalent here on AFF - "DSC platinums", etc etc. Somewhere along the way it became passe, because real travellers know what those tags can and can't do and this doesn't fulfil the intended purpose I guess.

So, you have them on your luggage? ;)

Not Q tags, no, because I am very particular about my personal details and even when they're on my checked luggage, I don't have contact details on them. Up until a few months ago, I did have the old platinum bag tag on my carry-on. That had my contact details because it was essentially two cards that you physically had to slide apart to see the details. Sadly, the card was shredded when attached to my carry-on when it was inside a checked bag.

I have Qtag on each trolley and it saved me once. Normally I travel with only one but rarely I have to travel with two carryons. One time in HKG I left one trolley at security check and went to the lounge without noticing. As I was about to leave the lounge and go to the gate I got phone call from security to come get my bag. I had some valuable stuff there and that Qtag saved me buying another return ticket to HKG the next day.

Are you sure that you really need a tag, and not a minder? ;)

I often have my Q Tag on carryon baggage in case it needs to be relocated to the Hold. I do have a Mobile number on it too incase it should get lost. Using the Tags to show off is a wasted effort as most people don't know or care about them.

Mine usually stays on. the way I place the Qtag means it often hangs from the overhead locker unless I tug it under. Bit of a pain. I quite like the design of the centenary logo on the tag I received though.

I had (probably still have) a Q tag on my briefcase. Was never in checked luggage, and it's unlikely to ever fly again. Basically, it was there because I was given it, and couldn't think of anything else to use it for.

It's got many uses on the road. I've literally used as a coaster to balance coffee cups on top of my bag. I've also had luggage tags affixed to it. Must be the most practical item QF has provided... ;)

For recent flight SYD-LST we used our carry-on bags with Q-tags, for the short visit. Knowing we had to carry a couple of items that always excite the airport security people we checked both bags. using the Q-tags. So occasionally Q-Tags can be useful on carry-on cases.
