Q bag tags

How do the Q bag tags actually work?

My question is this: If I’m travelling somewhere with some empty suitcases which all have q bag tags, can I put them inside each other and only the outside bag tag will be recognised?

Or will the system recognise bag tags INSIDE the luggage and think that there are multiple suitcases, even though they are inside each other?

Anyone have any idea?
No you can't. My husband had his suitcase repaired and we lost his tag but each time we went to check in his case we were being charged for additional luggage. We had to get ground staff to override it. Turns out the q-tag had been left between the lining and the shell during the repair but was still being picked up by the scanner. So I assume all the tags on your cases would probably scan.

Same problem as with my Etag which I carry with me and use with hire cars. If I take a taxi, I need to make sure it is well away from the window. You can buy foil bags to make the Etag unreadable.

Confirming what others have said. I travelled with a second Q-tag inside the suitcase (for a second bag on return flight) and the scanner had a hissy fit. It detected both tags so couldn’t check bag in. I had to get a paper label. Being a visible QR code, it overrode the Q-tag. So take the spare Q-tag in your carry on.

I've often wondered if they still worked but the above discussions have shown that to be the case. I rarely take check-in bags and when travelling to Europe it's usually Emirates because of the Dubai connection to different European cities avoiding Heathrow like the plague.

So if the visible barcode is consistent with the Q-tag, no problem? I have them attached to my bags and QF checkin agents IME treat them with disdain and attach paper barcodes anyway. It’s mostly worked.

I would suggest there are some who leave them in place as some type of "I've been everywhere badge".
Guilty, I can’t be bothered removing “security checked” stickers and they help me recognise my bag. I’ve been everywhere, man, I’ve been to HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG, HKG and HKG.

My experience is that the scanner can read tags inside your bag, and it gets 'confused'. A few years ago I had a tagged bag inside a tagged bag and the scanner couldn't cope. The attendant came over and asked if I had another tag inside the bag and I had to remove it before the scanner would let my bag be processed.
hey welcome to posting on AFF @AFF_SP - I have had the exact same experience at several airports. so annoying when you forget the other tag Is in the bag especially if you have to hunt for it. I once found I had put one inside a back pack (no idea why) that i packed into my checked bag and it took ages to work that out at the bag drop!

Thanks for the welcome Seat0B. I have been lurking for years. I appreciate all the advice from experienced travellers. It's so helpful for things that only experience teaches.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but struggling to find any "what to do at the airport" instructions for Q tags.

So, is this how they work?
- checkin the night before
- you don't need to associate the tags in any way whatsoever, just attach to bag
- ignore the first set of machines and walk straight to the bag machine
- scan your boarding pass
- machine automagically spots the q tag and sends your bag on its way

Is that how it works?

I'm wondering if I still have to go to the first machine to say it's 1 bag

You’ve got it! Once your first bag is scanned, the machine will ask if there is a second bag. If not, the process will finalise and print out a luggage receipt.
NB. Just in case (as some people carry a spare for a return extra bag), DO NOT pack a Q-tag inside your suitcase. Confuses the heck out of they machine!

Actually thanks for reminding me. I packed away our Q tags at the beginning of Covid and then we moved house. I have no idea where I put them!

Do Q Bag Tags work if you have a connecting flight or will I need to get a regular bag tag? Not sure how/if connecting bags are loaded differently but can’t imagine the arrivals crew would be checking?

When I check Q-tagged luggage domestically with no connections they put bag tags on. Seems they don't trust Q tags. So neither do I.

Cheers skip

I've used Q-tags for PER-HBA via MEL without incident. Also PER-ADL-MEL and PER-SYD-OOL. It is only if you used the (very rare nowadays) check-in counters do they put paper labels on. Or you choose to print paper luggage labels.

Can somebody tell me if the bar code and number are specific to me? I have four here - 2 for me - 2 for my wife. Problem - which on eto use?
Or doesnt it matter which one I use? Does it pick up the link between my boarding pass scan and then the bag tag scan?

Barcode is not linked to any personal info or QF membership details.
Q-tag joins luggage to flight it is checked on. I use one for this trip, my son can use same Q-tag for his next trip.

And I can confirm I have never had a problem with lost luggage. My suitcase has always arrived along with me, whether on a direct flight or via a third airport and different flight and aircraft.
