Qantas and Virgin Australia are both retiring the things... whats the point of them anyway?

Virgin have never had a 734, their 737 fleet is retired at 10 years. The A330s from JQ will not be refitted, they are already in the config QF will use them and will just need a paint job. As for the 738s, a new one arrives every month, today being the latest.

OK. What percentage of the 737s have been refitted? virgins ones??

80 percent of the fleet, a couple more to do and the rest go back to their owners when their replacements arrive, DJ have a further 50 on order and keep adding another 1 each month to the order book.

so their fleet will end up with 777s, A330s, 737s, E190 and ATR 72-500s.. do you think they will make any other additions? add any other plane to their fleet?

yes, they will add ATR72-600s to replace the 500s, however both these are not technically their fleet.

Yeah, what do you think the refitted 777s will be like? will they have first, business and economy instead of business, premium and economy?

Are you sure they wont be re-fitted? considering many don't have IFE and are all leather seats? I'm guessing they will be QF'd inside before returning to the fleet.

They all have some form of IFE - but I would imagine that the orange stains would go

One would hope so, mind you I get a chuckle on the couple of JQ35 flights last year where the IFE showed "welcome aboard from QF. Joyce talked about fleet commonality aircraft in reference to the new ones arriving, so a fair portion of the fleet are in that config already.

JQi still use the "Subtly, every aeroplane is different ..." pre-flight safety video. However, they have completly redone the sound track, unlike when JQi first started when it was obvious "JetStar" was dubbed over "Qantas" and "StarClass" over "Business".

I think you can rule out First.

Most likely stick with the current configuration of Business, Premium Economy and Economy.

Qantas have already outlined their fleet strategy moving foreward, 787s to JQ, JQ A330s to Qf to replace 767s, with some 767 routes going back to 738s. With the latest rating downgrade, QF are looking at reducing capacity, I bet that means accelerated retirement of the 20+ year old aircraft, especially the 767 and 734!

I read that presentation a couple of months ago. I think that elements of it were deliberately ambiguous as to the 787. I would not count out seeing 787's in QF colours. By the time the 787's come on in decent numbers for JQ most of the A330's coming back from JQ will be 15 years old or more. I think QF will keeping options open and their strategy will undoubdtedly change again in coming years.

I still find it strange that QF sees it's future in JQ and actually seems to be intent on slowly destroying itself

I thought the A330’s weren’t good at fast turnarounds?
