Qantas 787 Event

The problem with the font in the logo is that it looks very "now" which means it's going to look very dated in two years time.

Which first class seats?

Ah. My bad. Reading the email from AusBt and it showed a picture of the J class and then misread the text as showing 'suites' then the next line 'First....look at'.

dont like it, people who dont know Australia wouldnt know it was a roo.
Good on Air NZ for not messing about with the Koru

Does anyone have a picture of the underside and how the 'QANTAS' text would look like from below?

AND people who fly MANY airlines dont know what their logo represents as well!! SIA, CATHAY, CHINA EASTERN.WESTERN.SOUTHERN,......I COULD GO ON AND ON AND ON......some non kiwis would even say 'what is a koru'? I suppose it all depends on how much people want to research and find info!!

To be honest, I don't mind the new typeface. I think the logo will probably look dated in a few years, but the typeface is nice (IMO).

Thanks for the pics and event update.

Wow, that new logo is disgusting - seriously, who designed that?

I think that the kangaroo looks like it has an odd head with the legs that remind me of a short sword/dagger.

I think that the new Qantas font is OK but I prefer the old one. I would have also preferred black vs grey. Which seems to be the colour of the font on the underside of the B787.

I don't mind the new typface in general, but find it visually annoying the 'Q' looks different from the rest of the letters.

It seems to me that the event is a bit of a fizzer.

OK I'll try to do a bit deeper analysis here...

The new typefont is certainly a nod to the past. The now ex-typefont was rather an oddity when first introduced, with its leaning and curves, it felt fresh and I personally liked the softness of it. It's like the edges were polished off. Yet at the same time the perception was spreading that Qantas has lost its mojo. Then it was a rebranding for rebranding-sake, albeit coinciding with the A380 introduction. The now defunct logo and typefont are associated with the time of cost cutting, fleet grounding, inflight emergencies, redundancies.

This time is different. It can be argued that Qantas has got (or is getting) its mojo back. And Joyce wants to leave that legacy, most likely handing over to his successor at the centennial ceremony. Joyce is a symbolic leader. To that end, it ties very nicely with the "New Era. Same Spirit" message. That it is still an old premium brand but leaner. And the plan to have new livery on all of the fleet in time for the centenary anniversary reinforces the message. It acknowledges the past while looking into the future.

Now to the logo... what was a flying kangaroo is now a "stylised" version of it. We live in times of emojis. Shame it's lost its face but we will get used to it. The addition of the original roo logo (the winged kangaroo) on the front of each aircraft is a nice touch and another bow to the history. Simplification of the logo possibly had some practical element to it as well as the kangaroo will now be addded to the inside of the wingtips. People take photos of the wings and post this to social media more and more, and with introduction of inflight wifi it is a smart move for QF. It will still be a recognisable red tail and most won't even notice the difference. But those who do - employees, rusted on Qantas supported and those who defected - it is to them that this message is targeted.

Not a fan of the font...
They still haven't finished painting the previous logo on the entire fleet since changing it in 2008.

The font harks back to earlier models with modern twists (like the Q) but just looks stretched, and the kerning is off.

I agree that it seems odd they've changed it with planes still to re-paint. Hopefully this change will happen a bit faster. Bad timing really, as they've recently had nearly all their 737 and A330 fleets in the shop!

Website updated.

That logo/font is a shocker. The last one was mint!

I actually like the new logo.

The new typeface is so awful.

It's modern, I like that the lettering isn't so thick anymore. It probably made sense considering the size of the A380, but not any more.

The first class (my bad - Business class) seats look a little - hard? And not luxurious. Give me padding every time. Padding = luxury.

The font - I don't like it at all.

And the stylised 'roo' - still Qantas but I kind of liked the front paw of previous versions. It looks like one of those weapons that are thrown? Sorry, can't think of the name. :o

Google - shuriken.

chicka pointed this out to me... I hadn't even realised. It looks odd after you've noticed, but I think it works.

You've probably hit the nail on the head there. I too was thinking this is now, but fonts change very rapidly and they needed to think of that.

The Roo looks like it got into a drunken fight, smashed in the nose and hit over the head with a frying pan.

It's also lost its front paws. :(

You can flip the plane to reveal.

Ahhhh... Flash! My worst nightmare. My whole browser slowed to a crawl. Immeditely closed that tab. I thought the world was moving beyond stupid decisions like that (Flash)?

I think it'll now be the other way around, thanks to sxc's insight.

I don't mind the new typface in general, but find it visually annoying the 'Q' looks different from the rest of the letters.

Having looked at it a while now, I too agree with that. It's the only detractor for me that the "Q" shouldn't be stretched that wide. I'm not sure if it's just my perception, or they have actually made a mess of it.

Ultimately, I like the new design.

I also thought it was odd they had switched from a Gold stripe at the base of the tail to Silver, however having done some goodle image searches, I see that in the last repaint they got rid of the Gold stripe, replacing it with nothing, and this is essentially re-introducing it. I quite like having a colour between Red and White. Sure, Gold seems more premium than Silver, but perhaps Silver looked better in all the studies they did.

Finally, love love love that they've put a roo in a circle at the front under the coughpit. Guess they realised that retro was liked quite a bit, and a simple way to bring it to more aircraft without re-painting more aircraft is to add a badge to the front of each one, showcasing some history. I'm a fan!

Edit: Seems I have a similar view to Elementalist, above.

Aren't many of us rusted on and we don't like it?
