Qantas A380 reliability issues creeping up again?

What is the way forward from here for Qantas to restore reputation, quality, service, destinations, etc. - in other words to get it back to where it used to be and belongs?
It’s already happening?

New CEO. New chairman.

New A220s, A321XLRs, A350-1000s, 787-9s and 787-10s on the way - an average of 1 new aircraft every 3 weeks for the next 3 years. A330 refurbishments. New F, J, W and Y seats.

Fast-free and unlimited wifi is coming to all QF international aircraft regardless of class or FF status. Who would not want to enjoy this? Other airlines discriminate based on class or FF tier when determining who should use the (average speed) wifi. QF’s inflight entertainment is already world class.

Destinations is on an upward trend. Regular Continental Europe flights are back for the first time since 2013 with SYD-PER-CDG. QF didn’t fly to Korea, India, Italy and France pre-Covid and there hasn’t been any loss of countries that QF fly to since Covid (Hong Kong is in China - QF still flies there despite PVG suspended). They didn’t fly to Canada year round - they do now. New AKL-JFK service as well.

QFF continues to remain Australia’s second currency and its only getting stronger with the new rewards system and rumoured new partnerships with Telstra and Westfield.

It will take time, but I expect in three years time all Australians will have resumed their ironclad support for QF on the world stage.

Two dozen or so 767s were retired without real replacement (I expect they were meant to be replaced by the 787s that AJ gave to Jstar). Remember the good old days, when there was an widebody on just about every domestic service.
But that's the nature of the world without a MOM aircraft.
The widebodies these days are expensive and designed for long haul, not short.

Same reason you've got lots of narrow bodies flying transatlantic these days, also what used to be almost exclusively wide bodies

And Qantas did get by a quick count receive 9 332s over Joyce's early period as CEO as the 767s went out.

From those orders you ended up with 10 788s for JQ, 14 789s for QF and 12 A380s for QF. Believe that all the remainder has date expired/ been negotiated away.
Joyce cancelled most of the 787s in 2008 and 2012. The JQ 788s were the only part of the firm order not cancelled. The QF 789s were from the options which had been deferred and pushed back.

Simply masterful. I'm in awe. There's an analogy for this type of stuff, but probably distasteful to articulate it.

Not all, by any means. The 767 was a master of both, which made it such a useful aircraft. And, if you look at a bit of history, before Boeing went off the rails, the preferred replacement for the 737 was actually a small wide body. If they’d gone that way, the aviation world would look a bit different now.

None of which he ordered. Actually the 330s were a buy one get one free deal associated with the 380s. Rather a pity as they aren’t a bad aircraft in their own right.

Slowly. Too slowly, probably.

New chairman.
He’s not gone yet.

I don’t give a rat’s cough about aircraft that are going to Alan‘s favourites. So that’s the 220s, and probably the XLRs. 350 is a good choice but too few, too late, and does anyone really want to sit in a tube for 22 hours. I’m not a 787 fan, and class it with the Max.

I’m being overwhelmed by the wow factor. Actually last time I looked the J seats were horrific, with your feet contained in a cubicle from hell.

And what’s the actual bandwith that the aircraft can receive.

It’s the best in class, of airlines named Qantas.
Destinations is on an upward trend.
You’re obviously too young to remember where they used to go.
QFF continues to remain Australia’s second currency and its only getting stronger with the new rewards system.
Seriously. Nobody here seems to be much of a fan. And they wiped all of my points out, so I’m not either.

I doubt it. If they cannot keep people like me, who very much want them to succeed, they have zero chance. The only thing that QF have left that is better than world class is their operational prowess. And that’s because it’s in the hands of the pilots, not the management. But, by diluting the flying to other entities, they’ve worked really hard to lower that too.

I think you have summed it up pretty well. Need more 350's instead of more horrible Y 878's for a start. If we are really lucky Boeing will fall so far behind with 787's that someone smart at QF will cancel the order and replace them with 350's

That's why the government needs to own Qantas again - Qantas can no longer provide a good service and be a great representative for Australia at a price that is going to generate the good profits demanded by shareholders - either it has to become government owned again or else it is going to continue to slowly wither and die.
Lol because most gov - but specially Australian - have a great record of well run customer service organisations...

Cheers, needed the laugh 🤣🤦‍♂️

Ok? You can't have it all your way. Why not give her the benefit of the doubt?

I don’t give a rat’s cough about aircraft that are going to Alan‘s favourites. So that’s the 220s, and probably the XLRs.
So in your ideal world, QF should not renew the short-haul fleet and keep the ageing 717s and 737s?

He’s not gone yet.
What matters is that he's going.

I’m being overwhelmed by the wow factor. Actually last time I looked the J seats were horrific, with your feet contained in a cubicle from hell.
Please do elaborate. I struggle to understand how the new QF J suites are average, let alone "hell".

Blame the outdated free market ideology Australia currently applies to aviation which has resulted in more than 75% of airlines operating international to/from AU being from another country. I'm glad this free-market approach is slowly fading away with appropriate actions being taken by the government to secure QF's future from foreign capacity dumping disguised as "competition". It's working, with continental Europe destinations coming back on the QF map as a result of this.

More than 1 in 2 Australians are active QFF members. You should know full well that QFF points expire 18 months after inactivity. How is that QF's problem?

What doubt?

Under AJ she was the head bean counter, and now she's unfettered in her bean counting.

How could things possibly improve? The board knew what it was doing when it appointed her. That is, to screw the pax and maximise the profit by any means that was vaguely legal.

That free market is in interesting viewpoint. To survive free markets, you either need to be more efficient in your operations than your competitors, or offer better quality (as in perceived or real value of product/service). If the aviation markets operated on a free market basis globally, the current QF would probably be wiped out pretty quickly.

In effect, you are advocating protected markets with restrictions on competition, tariffs, subsidies, or the kind. I would offer that QF could lift up its game also without protective measures but it needs a total 180 in the boardroom and exec leadership attitudes on what's valuable. It might also temporarily reduce the profits gained by the shareholders but could be the most lucrative path in the long run. It's be pity we can't reliably simulate various scenarios on a, say, 10 year timeline.

Exactly, there is too much competition in Australia's international aviation market. Foreign carriers account for 75% of inbound and outbound flights, and that's not ideal for Australia and its sovereignty. It's not in the national interest. It's time the government wound back this extreme capacity dumping disguising itself as 'competition'.

Interested to think what they should do other than what they're doing? Is new aircraft, new F/J/W/Y seats, A330 retrofitting, lounge refurbishments, fast-free international wifi and more international destinations not enough?

Competition is a much needed tool to stop QF gouging its customers.

Guess we will have to see but QF always over promises and under delivers so I’m expecting the new aircraft and seats to offer a subpar experience with woeful meals just like they do currently
