Qantas adds Brisbane-Manila but suspends Sydney-Shanghai flights

I call the number on the text message, and my classic reward (business class) was rebooked as PVG - HKG and HKG -SYD in fare class C (commercial fare) on the same day. I asked if I have pay a points or tax difference and was told it's all waived.
Good on you. I guess it's because there are 3 person being booked in my ticket, if it's one, then thing becomes much easier. I also suspect it doesn't allow me to make change via online straight way when I use the recovery link above.

There was no cx availability when I check online, however the call centre staff was able rebook me into a commercial fare. Anyway my point is it doesn't matter if it is one seat or three seats, the call centre staff shouldn't have to search for reward seat availability when rebooking, they should be given permission to book into any fare.

Thanks for that. I guess it’s the person I talked to make change impossible because he clearly told me sine my booking was made classic rewards, there is no way Qantas will pay commercial fare for me to rebook. Only available if there is any reward seat is released by its partner airline.

This landed in my inbox today, from Qantas Tours

Besides the amusement of the airline no longer flying to China, the itinerary is breathtakingly bad.

Peking Duck, jade museum, traditional medicine place, silk spinning, tea village ... as well as the usual (and worthwhile Beijing & Wall sights with some '(subject to availability)'.

Most staff will not have the right training to give you the correct answer. Also given the timing they may not have gotten the memo on what to do specifically for SYD/PVG passengers.

It’s a PITA, I called and got SA and they were useless, they were trying to find me same flights on another day. I hung up called again and got Fiji, very much more helpful and rebooked through HKG with CX but said I could not do PVG to HKG one day and HKG to MEL the following day due to having too tight a connection between incoming flight from HND. Hung up called again and finally got Australia, all booked as requested on a later PVG to HKG flight and back to Aus following day.

Question for those in the know, I cannot select seats on the CX flights have tried on CX website but says I need to:
Online seat selection is not available. Please contact your booking agent for further assistance.

Any way around this?

Whilst they will no longer fly to mainland china it doesn't mean they haven't stopped selling tickets (and at somewhat ok prices). Interestingly connections via HK seem to be the main option with flights on either CX, HX, MU or CA possible.

Obviously, Qantas Tours gets very attractive rates from Qantas, at least. This is 10 day tour price including airfares from/to Oz.

Buy the tour, throw away the touring and get flights for half the sale price 😊

I just tried another time with customer service and you will be surprised to hear how inconsistent that customer service staffs deal with this cancellation issue. Got told I had to wait for another week for Qantas sending me further update regarding re-route. Can’t do anything right now, can’t rebook commercial fare, can’t find awards availability. Nothing, nil, can do. I have emailed SHR rewards dedicated team, and got immediate response saying please reach out to the customer service team that mentioned from the message.

Be interesting to see if it would work.
SQ is pretty established here and has built up some good will but if the price is right who knows. MH might be the one that suffers
Well timed service might be a lot better for Europe connections than SQ (i.e. connecting to QF1/2, and the QF codes on KL, AY & AF).?

Low yields and aircraft utilisation probably continue to be problematic though. On the utilisation side, IIRC immediately prior to the deal the ADL-SIN aircraft (which only operated 3-4? times a week) used to continue on to BOM (flight number originated in BNE, but plane originated in ADL) hubbing with other Australia originating services. With non-stops now to India, can't see this restarting.

Honestly?

I do not think this will happen.

QF's attitude us going to stay basically as oh we can't get you there with no seats on partners so.. refund it is.

I can't see them doing anything else unfortunately.

Haha on further inspection, Qantas Tours don’t even use Qantas flights:

More surprised to me is they are dealing case by case, if the booking is out if peak season and travel alone, then most likely QF will rebook immediately. But if the date is in Dec, and for more than 1 person, like my case, then I guess QF won’t budge.

Might just be me, but I think their commercial policy is fairly clear and your entitled to rebooking via HKG or TYO up to one week either side.

You just need to keep pushing (which you shouldn't need to) and then escalate through other means.

Something about squeaky wheel and grease.

It's odd that they chose to expand on existing destinations (SIN, BLR, MNL) with the freed up A330s rather than look at new destinations. I thought KUL was a strong favourite given the rumours (slide 24). Maybe QF decided not to use those A330s on a new destination as they clearly view the PVG suspension as temporary and would need to withdraw from a destination completely to resume SYD-PVG if they had launched new flights to a place like KUL? With these current changes, QF can just reduce frequency on existing destinations without withdrawing when they feel the need to resume SYD-PVG.

but I would support a policy in cutting this flight to be honest
It's not the only flight between Australia and China.

So to get this clear, you want all flights between China and Australia to be cut just because they may have different strategic and military objectives to Australia?

China is a crucial economic partner of Australia. Air China, Beijing Capital Airlines, Cathay Pacific, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Qantas, Sichuan Airlines, Tianjin Airlines and Xiamen Airlines continue to fly a multitude of services from various ports in China to various ports in Australia :)

Sorry, I'm not sure how you have connected this airport presentation to a rumour that QF would fly to KUL. If it was something that came out of someone at QF, fair enough...

Airports often talk up business opportunities.

I’m not even sure KUL would work. I don’t think I’ve been on too many MH flights to/from Australia that are at capacity and it doesn’t strike me as a route that would have much meat on the bone.
