Qantas adds Brisbane-Manila but suspends Sydney-Shanghai flights

I thought they would have had enough QFF corp traffic to make the route work.

I can speak for a bunch of AU business and also multinationals I work with, many are pulling operations out of China, especially US companies. If you Google it you can read up about the China manufacturing exodus. It’s quite interesting. Corp travel is not as strong as it used to be to China.

That combined with China tourism still clawing its way back up slowly makes this decision to suspend the Shanghai service pretty unsurprising.

One thing is for Chinese tourism, its very hard for QF to beat out all the Chinese airlines. MU direct is about the same price but generally more Chinese would favour MU despite QF being a decidedly better service.

Then theres CZ , CA, 3U, MF, HU who are regularly quite a bit cheaper with a stopover. CX is generally also at QF prices (sometimes cheaper) with a stopover in HKG.

With Chinese customers prefering the Chinese airlines (and many do acknowledge that QF is better) they're not about to pay a premium for it.

QF with their plane shortage, this makes some sense although personally I lose flying QF for PVG direct, but going via HKG or using MU isn't the worst (too bad the MU PE crediting to DL F loophole is now closed).
 
I think this news also reflects on the unfortunate failure of QF’s advertising campaigns in China.

To put it into a local perspective, if Qatar Airways can manipulate ordinary travelling Australians into consistently supporting them instead of our national carrier as they did last year, then surely QF can adopt a new strategy in regards to the mainland China market that delivers good outcomes for them. It doesn’t have to resemble the extensive and conniving campaign which QR deployed towards Australians last year, but QF need to up their advertising and influence game towards China’s travelling public to a satisfactory level. The average travelling Chinese citizen probably hasn’t even heard of Qantas.

They should at least increases awareness and willingness to try their brand when flying to Australia. Because I don’t think MU flights to and from Australia are ‘half full’…..

Not sure it’s manipulation when they offer a better network and a far better service than what QF does.

As to the China issue whenever I’ve looked at prices QF has always been more expensive and quite considerably. Whilst I agree QF has a better overall product than MU I don’t think it’s worth the price difference

I would logically assume that QFs cost base is significantly higher than every Chinese carrier. Very few leisure travellers will pay significantly more to try another brand, so to attract those passengers, they would likely need to lower prices.

No point having a full plane, if the yield means you're making no money. Better utilising that asset where there is potential for better return.
 
So, my PVG-SYD flight just got cancelled. I was hoping to get rebooked on a MU Qantas codeshare. But it seems that there are no seats available on Qantas.
When I check the same dates on MU's website, they are available.

Are there restrictions on which MU fare classes are available as the Qantas codeshare?

I don't see rebooking on MU as being an option supplied on the commercial policy.
 
If QF97 utilises the A330-200 arriving from Auckland at 17:20, another frame is still required to operate QF15 to LAX later in the evening?
Correct. Unless QF decide to run the 787 those four days to LAX they'll have to ferry an A330 up from SYD.

As hutch mentioned above rebooking on MU isn’t the policy, regardless only a handful of seats on the QF code MU operated are released per flight and most of these are flex fares in Y/J.

Must say, I'm not surprised at SYD-PVG, Chinese demand still below 2019 levels. The BNE-MNL timings must be on a "take it or leave basis" from the MNL slots co-ordinator. QF will have to wait it out if they want more preferable slots in MNL for their BNE flights.

Why aren't they trying Sydney or Brisbane to Taipei? China Airlines and Eva both seem to have healthy loading and prices.

Given the choice of CI, BR or QF to TPE which would you choose? I know for the average punter it doesn't matter, but people who know the products or those that are regular customers wouldn't go near QF.

Both have great J products IMO but I’m still amazed at how many people think CI is a Chinese airline and wouldn’t think of booking with them

CI used to have a poor reputation- not because of China but plane crashes in the 80s & 90s

It’s not so much a bad name now but there are a stack of people I know who didn’t realise they were Taiwanese based.
If you mentioned CI to the average punter I’d be willing to bet many think it’s Chinese

That’s why I used 80s and 90s because they are much better now… and you are correct most would think it’s a Chinese airline too
