We switched from Medibank Private to Assure last year - my god what a nightmare they - I will be talking to Medibank Private again on Monday re switching back - obviously YMMV.

Hi

I am looking at switching from Australian Unity to QANTAS/NIB plan. For my wife and I this looks pretty appealing. Using Advanced hospital (way past pregnancies! )and top extras it works out at about $18 a month less than our current cover. Paying at least a quarter before April 1 in advance provides another savng which we have been advised we cannot to with AU. Then there are the points - 80k before the payments start.

Any flaw in my logic? I can't compare it with the normal NIB cover without giving them too much info.

Anyway, I do have a question and it relates to the Wellness Program. I am darned if I can figure out what 'Locked Points' are. Can you assist?

Advice? Shop around. QF/NIB might be $18 cheaper than Aust. Unity, but how much is another provider like HCF? Might be significantly cheaper than the QF option. Although the 80K points might make it worthwhile anyway.

The Ette arranged so I have little knowledge other than her comments - we had to have multiple mship cards issued initially due to some mixup on their behalf and you cannot use an older card only new with newest number - TBMK you deal with Assure and not NIB - the Ette just had one bunch of claims originally submitted electronically returned and she has to redo all claims due to some error whereas we have a MP office 2ks up the road where you can wander in. I will be calling both to attempt to clarify tomorrow.

When I joined last year they got my name wrong and had to re-issue cards, and then due to MP being so bloody slow sending the certificate of what is already covered, I had some expenses I had to wear for a while until MP finally sent the certificate. Took about 2 months, but wasn't Assure's fault at all... totally an MP stuff up. When they did get them, they simply required a scan of the receipts and I got my money back.

Beyond that, chicka signed up briefly before cancelling in the first week. They sent her a card with the wrong name attached to a brand new FF# because the phone operator was so inept he couldn't spell her existing name nor take down her existing FF#. So they lost some business there.

Naturally, rates have risen this year, but they do everywhere. My first year they were cheaper than MP, and they still are. I shall continue my cover, I have already earned over 10k points, and while that's not huge, it's still 10k more points than I would have earned had I simply gone with MP again last year.

Now with the insurance promo I am earning twice as many points, as if you hold 2 types of cover you get double points. Could be 20k in it this year – subject to caps!

Thank you - this is very useful including the negative stuff.

We have found the price comparable with Aust Unity for our cover - marginally cheaper - but I have been made a little edgy by the 'technical difficulties' that seem to have plagued us signing up. It gives me an opportunity to look at a couple of options. Points certainly make it attractive and apart from price complaints about a year ago I can't see anyone saying it doesn't work.

It does blow my mind that an airline has a health policy, though.

Update re Qantas Assure - I called them and asked for quote for next 12mths to be paid in advance - unbeknown to me the Ette also called and asked for same as we currently have 'Couples Mship' - so far have received 3 quotes via email all for different amts - coverage appears same - sure are on the ball this mob.

Yuo definitely asked for the same plan each time? It all online. We are actually paying the first quarter now to get an extra benefit of cost. Talking to the man now if yu have a question

As I say we are currently members and asked for new quote to pay 12mths in advance at same level of coverage as we are currently on - I can see no level of difference of coverage.

I was going to leave this until they upped the promotion offer again. But then the wife went and decided to do it anyway. For a paltry 40k points.

She doesn't get this points game the poor dear. Good thing she's tops in almost every other conceivable way.

Oh well. It does provide a small savings in premiums at least, and we can always move to another provider in the near future if need be.

A couple of weeks ago I received an email from Qantas Assure Health Insurance so I went online for a quote and found that the price for their Advanced Hospital Cover for the two of us is $267.61 per month, compared with the $257.29 we're now paying for the AHM White Deluxe hospital cover (both with a $500 excess) and didn't think more about it until I received a phone call from Qantas Assure a couple of days later. (Both of these policies I'm comparing are the second top hospital cover that covers everything except pregnancy, weght loss, cosmetic surgery etc.)

We have been with AHM for over 30 years and have also always had top extras cover but decided a couple of months ago to drop the Extras cover as that saved us around $100 per month and last year we only received back around $700 for dental and occasional physiotherapy sessions so decided to put the $100 a month we're saving into an account to cover what we would have claimed for dental etc.

When I received the call from Qantas Assure I was offered double QFF points if I sign up over the phone so if I switch to the Advanced Hospital cover we would receive 40,000 QFF points rather than 20,000. I also asked for quotes for cover with extras as well and was quoted $328.87 per month for Advanced Hospital + Basic Extras and we would receive 37,500 points x 2 so 75,000. The Advanced Hospital + Top Extras quote is $452.70 per month and we would receive 60,000 points x 2 so 120,000 points.

I'm very tempted to switch to the Advanced Hospital + Top Extras just to get the 120,000 points and then drop the Top Extras after the bonus points have been paid after a couple of months. The extra cost for the Top Extras is not worth it on an ongoing basis but it's probably worth paying the extra 2 or 3 months to get the additional 80,000 points. We would then keep the Advanced Hospital cover even though it is $10 a month more than we pay AHM as it is probably worth that for the bonus points and ongoing extra points. Also we can use Amex for Qantas Assure so get 2 points per dollar with the Amex Explorer card while AHM don't take Amex now so we have to use Visa.

If I am able to drop the Extras cover after 3 monthly payments have been charged I would be paying $185.09 per month extra for the Top Extras compared with Hospital only cover so $555 extra for the additional 80,000 points, and for the Basic Extras the additional premium would be $61.20 per month so $183.60 extra for an additional 35,000 points.

Has anyone else switched to Qantas Assure and taken Top Extras and then cancelled after a few months and if so did you have any problems dropping it? I'd appreciate any feedback on any aspects of Qantas Assure including their hospital cover compared with other health funds and claims experiences that you can pass on.

I'm using iPhone 6 and it is working but hasn't updated today's activity. I just went to look following your post. Restarting the phone hasn't done it. It can be slow sometimes but the test is to go to the Health App and see if that is collecting data. (It is). So give it time to update. I will watch it closely though...
