Qantas Business Class meals & menus

I don't disagree that the toasties are the most basic sort of item on these 1-2ish hour sectors.

And I know some of the asian carriers (with much lower costs, and more competition) have some pretty nice regional J offerings

What would make a great J meal?

Oft canvassed question in these parts. I really do think QF taylor their offerings as more "snack" and "comfort food" offerings. Certainly not on the high end - there are certain pretty decent exceptions in proper lunch and dinner services I have recently had that I feel are up there (eg: the barra thai curry).

In general though I think QF considers trunk flying catering to be secondary eg: most people will eat before/after they arrive (let's ignore connections, which is a whole other coughpy can of worms).. and since the lounge offerings are, in the main, dire it seems to me anyway that QF expect either not many people will eat the meals(I see various levels of take up on flights.. me included) or will just enjoy a bit of soup, a toastie as a snack item.

I do think some of the salads seem to be "better" options when offered though I tend to not be a salad guy lol.. you don't win friends with salad!)

expections are difficult to set given the market and the competition. You can't really equate say SIN-KUL with MEL-CBR or SIN-BKK with MEL-BNE. Doesn't really work that way.

I don't have the answer, but I also don't get that upset about it because I'm not really there for the food. The most disappointment for me was the recent ex-OOL "steak" that was like an old boot. In the end I'll live if I get a toastie, a lentil soup or a barra curry.

(there's aother issue on short sectors like MEL-CBR/ADL/SYD where even in a 737 getting everyone served is a nightmare sometimes so smaller items are possibly preferred (but tha does read like a cop out).

I'm not sure where the answers lie. If they got rid of the Rockpool influence would that drastically change the offerings? I dunno.

As an aside, they could do better than the koko black choccy blocks as a sweet tbh. While I do like the koko brand and it's not horrible chocolate... somehow t seems a bit cheap presentation wise... plus it usually is half melted! lol

difficult one.

If that is the spicy chicken then it was my lunchtime offering yesterday MEL-ADL. Whilst enjoyable, a bit lacking for a meal.

Agree, but then again MEL-ADL doesn't give much time for a feast :)

I think one of the best meals I had on that sector was a gourmet pie. it was actually quite filling. They clearly did not observer the destination though as they could have made it a floater :D

Flown across the country a few times in economy lately and I tell you what those box meals are far superior to half the food that gets served in J in recent times.

Every time I cop the egg white omelette or some sort of hot decent option in J it's dry and horrible....maybe sweating in the box keeps everything moist in those box meals?
I can’t believe you said that. I took one Y flight as it was so short, the meal looked like vomit. I ran straight back to business and there I’ll stay thank you. Even if you don’t like the J meal, you can most certainly identify it.

Well... we used to get a full hot breakfast CBR-SYD with tea and coffee on a flight of around 25 minutes wheels up to wheels down. And that was with up to 24 F class. Plus business behind, also getting a full meal.

Still get a hot breakfast on the 25 minute CBR-SYD flights in J. The trolley is out within 2 minutes of seatbelt sign being extinguished. It can be done.

Ive also had two hot options offered on short breakfast sectors.

Breakfast in J seems to get better food as QF must assume pax rely on it (rather than the lounge). But if it’s possible for breakfast it should be standard for all sectors. To assume someone flying MEL-CBR at 7pm has either the time or desire to have eaten in the lounge and can therefore be happy with salad offcuts is pathetic.

I don’t mind toasties being an option in J. It just should not be the only option, nor the only hot option.

CNS-BNE some dodgy curry that tasted liked it looked .... toastie would’ve been better;)

In J today, ADL-MEL depart 1140 hours. The choice was a toasted turkey sandwich or fresh fruit salad. I was the fifth person served and third to choose the fruit salad.

Turned out it was the last fruit salad with at least two other pax asking for it.

It was delicious combined with the yoghurt.

Fruit salad for basically a lunchtime flight pretty poor

Sydney to Brissy, "lunch" flight on 737. Very odd selection of meals I found with 4 different choices, one more dissatisfying than the next o_O. On offer were a mysterious white fish in curry sauce which smelled as disgusting as the description sounds. Other options were a teeny tiny pastrami and Sauerkraut toasty, a rather boring looking salad with some cold chicken and a Laksa soup with Vermicelli noodles.

I was in 2 A with entire J full to the last seat. Oddly, all 4 pax ahead of me had the chicken salad so by the time I was served, this selection had gone. I wouldn't have chosen that one anyway so I had the choice between toastie and Laksa. I am glad that I chose the latter as it was absolutely delightful, just way too small a portion. The soup was actually quite spicy and authentically flavoured so not a bad choice at all. Not a single passenger was risking the "white fish" with the pax behind me choosing either the toastie or the soup. I hear others complain about the tiny portions so I'm not the only one left a bit dissatisfied. Staff however was great on this short flight and even gave me a cheeky little plastic cup of Scotch though I had asked for it after the captain had called to prepare the cabin for landing ;)
