Qantas Business Class meals & menus

So last time I was in Dom J lounge i watched a guy order a straight gin several times, then go back to his seat and pour into a flask, once on board the aircraft he ordered a tonic water, then proceeded to mix his own G&T. The crew did not seem fussed in the slightest.
Now, that is a great idea! I should tell my mate who, by the way, LOVESSSS her Gin & Tonic :D

I've seen a guy do that on Jetstar and nearly got himself arrested.

The point, back on topic for the thread, is if AA can give you spirits - and spirits as a PDB at that - on a $200 F fare between LGA-BOS, surely - surely - QF can throw in a couple of G&Ts for their $500- (and usually much closer to) $900 SYD-MEL J fare.

The real reason is AA have two equal competitors and a number of smaller but equally fierce competitors (AS, B6)

QF has just got complacent.

Having said that, I don't believe the lack of spirits is due to cost, for reasons explored above.
but this is exactly my point.

Fare paid, btw, is irrelevant. It is the service standard.

Also remember once on the aircraft and in the cabin fare paid, there on points, upgrade whatever really doesn't come into if you're able to be given spirits or not (it may be a factor with meal ordering as in status rather than fare paid). Just because one paid $200 USD for a fare doesn't mean the person next to you paid the same, if anything(comp status upgrade) for that seat.

QF is complacent because they have market dominance and they know it. VA is weak(and have already admitted they are not focused on the business pax) and rex is a minnow.

In my view you're making a false equivalence between ticket price paid and service expectations.. very different markets and situations and that is what I was trying to get across in ramble.

anyway look I absolutely agree re spirits. I am not so sure the QF excuse of galley space for masks or sanitiser stuff is that valid, you could still load a galley cart with at least a FEW minis of scotch, vodka, gin etc. It doesn't make a lot of sense to be honest.

SO yes QF, bring back the spirits (I mostly drink wine or the odd beer on board, but have been known to have a spirit myself) but these service elements have zilch to do with fares paid.. that is all about expectation (understandable) but it's not really relevant imo. The high domestic pricing in Oz is a whole other issue and a separate topic for mine.

re the "fill flask in lounge, make mixed drink onboard" idea ....

In theory one is not supposed to consume their own alcohol on board an aircraft but that given by the crew (RSA and all).. In practice the intent has more been about people buying duty free scotch before a long haul and going nuts on board I guess rather than a hip flask of spirits for a J G&T (and the need to do this is sad on so many levels) but technically it's a no no. Given the lack of available spirits this is probably why the crew let it slide if it was just one or two drinks worth rather than large scale consumption. it's a risky thing though tbh.

But in the near future at least, most people will be travelling on their own dime - business travel will take much longer to recover, especially with all the zoom meetings - so they still have to justify the extra spend.

The fact that there's a sale for $449 at the moment kind of proves that point.

It's more than risky - it's against CASA regulations and you can find yourself met by AFP on arrival and banned from flying QF again. Not worth it if you ask me.

yes (and the sale was extended by a week.. which makes one wonder how the take up is going...)

and the argument about business travel is an interesting one. I mean for purely domestic flights - all of which are mostly 5 or less hours, I imagine the vast vast vast majority had already mandated Y fares anyway (sure, pax can upgrade but that's not the same thing in terms of yield to QF, even if the points used represent a fair $ value of course). I imagine very few of those travelling on business prior to covid, but definitely post, will be actually paying J fares - even WITH juicy corporate discounts. Sure if you're a law Partner, CEO or some other big wig then sure you may, but for the road warriors. it's more likely than not Y being paid for by the company.

In a way I think this spawned the "YUPP" fares I mentioned earlier in the US.. employees could buy an "economy" fare on the company dime but be seated in "F" and it was a bit of a dodge, but also had the advantage of still providing yield in seats that would otherwise go to elites as comp upgrades. More recently DL had been being much more agressive with selling premium cabin fares at reaslistic mark ups to Y to make them actually acceptble to many as an option as opposed to ridiculous. Again, this is why I think something like that could definitely work in Oz. I know, off topic to meals but in my defence I merely brought it up within the context of the side track of "if AA flew in Australia..." :)

I had a feeling it was a actual regulation but I didn't know for sure and didn't have time to ask Dr Google, so did not want to state so as fact :)

Today on QF851, DRW-PER. SDT 1740 ACST. Flight was delayed about 40 mins due to a number of passengers getting off the plane.

Dinner was either Beef Brisket with sweet potato and corn cakes, prosciutto with brown rice salad or baked chicken with mashed potatoes.

Service was excellent, water served followed by drinks and nuts. Dinner orders were taken by the crew and the meal presented without use of the cart. Unfortunately there has been alot of distractions and a medical emergency included. Still have over an hour to go and am not looking foward to the interrogation on arrival.20211116_190738.jpg20211116_192744.jpg

This meal looks good - perhaps Qantas have got rid of the caterer who offers up a sole sausage roll for a J class meal on a recent QF flight BNE-CNS!

All comes down to flight duration and time of departure. I've had the meal above in a SYD-MEL but also a sausage roll if I've flown ahead before 5pm.

Was on the A330 service from MEL to SYD on Tuesday (departing MEL at 7pm) and was served the Lamb Moussaka. The only difference appear to the meal pictured by wannabeinvestmentbanker was the inclusion of the Lindt chocolate bar.

QF hot dinner (MEL-SYD).JPG
Had a 2013 Brokenwood Sav Blanc which went well with the meal.

Apologies for the weird placement of the tray as I had our infant daughter on my lap.

Was handed a bottle of water (in addition to what was included with the meal) by the crew as the PDB given the flight was 100% full in J and the crew was busy preparing for departure.

Doesn't seem to be any rotation atm. My 5pm MEL-SYD last Friday was again Lamb Moussaka.
I know moussaka is not exactly healthy (high fat high salt), but on a plane, I would rather a moussaka (or curry) over something like, I don't know, bread and fruit salad (or muffin or worse). At least a moussaka (or curry) would taste like human food (for human in first world country) ......

To balance the argument, I believe the main meal on the kangaroo route is served out of Darwin so a lighter meal on the domestic leg. I'd imagine the lamb disappears quick!
