Qantas Business Class meals & menus

On this Wednesday's QF 747 service from SYD to ADL, I was offered two options: some veggie salad thing which didn't sound appealing and a chicken curry option, I chose the latter with some sparkling wine:

The curry was fairly bland and certainly not one of the better meals I've had on domestic J.

On the plus side there was plenty of bubbly to go around (I suppose it doesn't hurt that there was only one other pax in J):


They also handed out these breaded cheese ball things which were quite good (arguably better than that curry thing):


One gripe I do have was the lack of a pre-departure beverage service. When I boarded I was handed a tiny bottle of water and that was it:


Contrast that with my trip last month on Virgin Australia in business (from SYD to MEL) where I was offered a pre-departure champagne:


Am I missing something here? Perhaps I'm off-base but for as long as I can remember travelling in business domestically, be it in Australia or pre-COVID, in the US, there would always be an adult drink on offer as a pre-departure beverage. Indeed, one of the exclusive benefits of flying UA First domestically was you could request an old fashioned as a pre-departure drink.

Pre COVID, Qantas Domestic business had a Pre-Departure beverage choice of Water or Sparkling (water).

In the US it is a 'cough shoot' - for most legacy carriers, FA's are supposed to offer a PDB of choice to pointy end PAX but many deign not to do so. AA - I'm looking at you

Agree totally with Serfty's comments. In addition..

- prior to the water/sparking water choice there was water or a juice of some sort. orange, apple, guava were often optons iirc.

in the US on the majors it's as inconsistent as QF is (or was pre-covid). Sometimes it was whatever you wanted (I remember one bloke ordering a coffee.. and a beer at the same time?! lol) and other times it was nothing or if you were lucky water. It often would depend on the airline and/or route and regionals, with even shorter turnarounds often did not do this.

It certainly was never something to assume to be had. AA specially you would never be too sure what you might get. A bit like a box of chocolates (which you never would get )

Champagne, really? Last time I had to endure a flight on Virgin, they didn’t even offer proper champagne on the trans Tasman but some cheap and nasty sparkling.

Not that this changes anything about how cheap it is of Qantas to not offer you anything prior to the flight- totally agree on that.

QF454 MEL-SYD 3PM toda6 offered choice of Salad of Prosciutto and grilled corn with sour dough or a Cornish Pastie with Relish. I didnt see anyone take the salad and i opted for just a drink as had eaten in the J lounge at Spice Bar.

That looks the same as the QF10 menu when I flew recently.

I had the prawns, lamb, cinnamon pastry and icecream.

Had the sausage roll midflight as well as some other snacks.

Didn’t feel great towards the end of the flight so skipped breakfast and tried to sleep. I think I might just have been dehydrated.

The breakfast menu looked the same as the flight over to the UK.

I would definitely do the trip again in J. Not so keen on trying the Y experience but I may do that. Upgrades can be hard to come by.

I flew LHR-PER-MEL in B787 Y, an aisle seat toward the back. Swore I would never do it again ...
