Qantas Business Class meals & menus

QF1508 CBR-SYD
17:35 departure

I was pleasantly surprised to be served a hot dinner on this flight. Luckily I was sitting in row 1, because the pilots asked the cabin crew to prepare for landing when the flight attendant got to row 2

First lounge was excellent once I got there, the lady letting people through at the departures entrance was knew and didn’t realise domestic passengers could fly out of T2 meaning myself and a few other passengers were left very confused. To the flight the crew were excellent. There was a deaf passenger in 2E and whilst the cabin manager Dom did communicate in sign language all the crew were very accommodating and welcoming to him which I thought was really nice.

Anyways dinner orders were taken before take off. After wheels up a drink with almonds. I order the soup and I’d estimate about 3 others did, everyone else opting for the prawns which meant there was a delay in getting it as the crew tried to get a ton of dishes out. Followed by the pork which was cooked perfectly and the fresh zingy pineapple salsa perfectly complemented it. The ice cream sandwich was a bit soggy but delicious nonetheless.

Had the same dish on MEL-ADL last night. Was quite tasty and the double serving of bread helped soak up all the sauce 😋 If only I hadn't had a long, tiring day I would've opted for some wine as well.

BNE-CNS 9:05 departure on Friday. Offered a croque monsieur or a beetroot and chickpea salad. We had one of each but neither were worth eating.
The fried ham and cheese sandwich came with the obligatory side portion of bread - that turned out to be more enjoyable than the monsieur.

SYD-MEL, 11th March, dinner time flight:

This flight got downgraded from an A330 to a boring 737 about three weeks prior. Nevertheless, it turned out to be one of the best Qantas flights in a long time!

We were lucky with the crew, both purser and his colleague were wonderful. Meal choice was the ever same boring salad with “charred corn” and prosciutto (and about a kilo of baby spinach) or a surprisingly tasty Asian style beef dish with way too much rice and Bok Choy but still enough of the stir fry itself to fill us both up. The meat was extremely tender (though I suspect a thorough bath in Bicarb Soda beforehand, it had “that” feel and taste to it…) and the sauce had even a bit of a kick to it, really nice. The dish came with fresh spring onions that the crew added before handing out the tray which was almost an overkill, dare I say.

Wines on offer were both Dandelion which we very much like and the Cabernet Sauvignon did not disappoint. We liked it so much that shortly before landing, the lovely flight attendant came with a leftover full bottle packed in a cute Qantas string bag and offered us to take it to our hotel to enjoy our weekend in Melbourne- how nice is that! Second time in a row now that I get a “take home bottle” from Qantas, maybe it’s suddenly something that is encouraged? Whatever it is, keep it going as it more than makes up for the lack of spirits on board if you ask me.

All in all an amazingly good little flight which was one of those occasions were I am happy to be so loyal to Qantas and forgive them some of these annoying moments we all have with the airline. Well done.

By comparison to the trip CBR-MEL on Thursday, the meal on the return on QF1520 on Sunday at 1150 was very disappointing. Forgot to take a photo, but it was a very soggy, very eggy tasting onion quiche. Not pleasant in either taste or mouth feel. On this flight there was also no welcome drink or snack - by comparison on QF1527 on Thursday we were each given a cold bottle of water, and a pretzel snack as we took our seats. No bread offered or available on either flight. Got tea/coffee on the flight down to MEL, but not on the return.

Purser on QF1527 on Thursday, Paul, was lovely - warm, professional and welcoming.

Business lounge in CBR on Thursday was jam packed full - not a seat to be found anywhere until a couple of SYD flights left. I think it's time for Qantas to re-open the QP in CBR. By comparison, the Business Lounge in MEL was delightful - but then it was the middle of the day, on the Sunday of a long weekend!

Overall, this was a pretty good trip for us.

Last two evening SYD-MELs have been same as above two beef dishes. Seems QF has an agreement for beef and VA for chicken.

The beef above today and butter chicken have been best dom J meals in last couple of years in terms of flavour and quality of meat. Good to see QF updating menus. The shiraz doing the rounds is also very drinkable atm.

That beef dish is excellent, had it on Friday. One of the best QF Domestic meals in a while, hands down.

Boarded early only to be surprised with no PDB at all this time (not even bottled water). Crew were friendly and came by a couple of times to offer refills on the wine and water. The meal itself was pretty bland, and probably one of the worst business class meals I've had in some time. I can't fault the crew for this but I will say that QF needs to improve the quality of the catering now. COVID can no longer be used an excuse for cutting corners and skimping out on a meal.

I also flew QF in Y to BNE from SYD on Friday afternoon which consisted of crackers and cheese along with wine and other refreshments. Overall couldn't complain about that. For my Saturday morning flight out to LRE in Y (only cabin available) I was handed a brownie and a number of soft drinks and other light refreshments. Lastly, for my Sunday afternoon return to BNE in Y, a more substantial box of snacks were provided along with booze in addition to light refreshments:

Having flown QF and VA J recently, IMHO QF have the edge...which I realise is a highly contrarian opinion on here. QF seem to at least be updating where VA have the same menu they did last year. As a weekly flyer I value variety I feel QF is doing quite a job of that.

Had the chicken curry last night BNE MEL. Quite tasty, but the rice a tad too dry, or perhaps not quite enough sauce. Overall a solid one for a 2hr service at dinner time.
