Qantas Business Class meals & menus

some flights will have the bar available from 0900 instead of 1200

Thats actually a good initiative QF. I don't often get out of bed and crack a tinnie or pour a shiraz, but when I have been travelling for 24 hours, and my body clock says it's past 5 pm and time for a refresher, it's great that it's available.

And if not, it's good to have the option at least.

Being a nervous flyer I start most pacific mid-morning crossings with half a gut of shiraz in any case.

Nice frittata on the B737 from AKL-MEL this morning (forgot about a photo), but I did have a lovely glass of Jacques-something champagne as served in the Melbourne F Lounge. I was impressed.

Now in Melbourne J lounge and on the bench and bench-fridge with the other wines is “The Drives” sparkling. Qantas pub level wine! I went to the other side of the bar to ask why such a poor selection of wines, when I spied Crosier in the fridge! So there are decent wines here, you just have to ask. I now also notice better red wines up on the shelves. Doh!

No it wasn’t. (PDB)
Hasn’t been standard on Domestic J since long before Covid.

My memory might be a little off on this one, but I don't think it was that long ago QF had PDB in dom J. I do recall at one point it was 'enhanced' to water and sparkling water only, and then it might have become one of those consistently inconsistent service offerings.

But I see evidence of pre-departure beverages on this thread and other trip reports as recently as 2019.

Yea, it used to be the infamous “water or water” pre-Covid. I still find it ridiculous how Qantas stinges around with that while even AA can offer a full drinks selection pre-flight (admittedly on only about 2/3 of flights, depending on the crew’s mood of the day).

Pre departure Champagne and sparkling water offered both ways MEL-AKL-MEL this month. A small bottle of water was waiting at every J seat on arrival. No PDB on the domestic route that I remember. But hey, that was two days ago and I’m sleep deprived! I’ll make a note this afternoon.

edit: Definitely no PDB this afternoon MEL-PER. Service was extremely good. The CS did just take orders from rows 1 to 3: perhaps everyone was WP!

Yep- trans-Tasman still gets this but not on Domestic. Unfortunately, the trans-Tasman services have otherwise been crippled to save a few bucks, no proper international style meal with a menu etc. anymore but rather the stock standard Domestic service with an additional choice and champagne added in. Very disappointing compared to Air NZ or, science forbids, Emirates even.

Qantas International has developed Meal Select 2.0.

They no longer need to ask for your choice in advance as the only dishes produced at all catering locations are Jiangxi Style Humpty Doo Barramundi and Slow Cooked Chipotle Lamb Sandwich.

Standard dessert for a gluten intolerant meal. Hardly inspiring.

It's certainly gluten-free - so is dust.

Not inspiring at all. Right up there with ANA

If Neil is reading this, here are some GF dessert ideas.

QF35 on 4/3 first ever international business class experience. Crew were excellent, and we're happy to assist with any request. PDB of water or champagne offered, and then a bar service shortly after takeoff. Orders were taken for lunch based on status, but as a Silver I still got my first choice on everything.

Entree I had the gnocchi which was flavoursome and soft.

Mains was the beef fillet, whilst definitely not pink inside it was still tender.

And desert I went the cheese given it's impossible to get on domestic flights nowadays.PXL_20230304_043617083.jpg
The "salad" was boring and tasteless and despite watching the vinaigrette being poured over it had hardly any flavour to notice it was even there.

Before landing I had the pumpkin and goats cheese quiche which was good although would have liked something slightly more substantial and I forgot to take a picture.

As others have noted the menu had the section about the personalised dining experience however nothing was offered by the crew regarding this.

Looking forward to following this up with QF52 later this week.

With the competition today, SYD-MEL. Choice between poached chicken salad on shredded cabbage with beans, or four cheese toastie. Chose the former, came with dressing added table-side.

Service comfortably reached row three with plenty of time to spare. QF have really improved in this respect!

Polished crew.

Business lounge was fairly quiet around midday. What a difference! Clean. Lots of room. Quiet. Bank of work cubicals… something which VA lounges sorely need.

Croser Rose sparkling. Nice change from the usual. I see it’s now around $20 a bottle at Dan’s… a big drop from what it used to be IIRC.

The only aspect VA wins on is the width of their business class seats. The aisle is noticeably wider on QF, and the centre armrests very narrow. Touching elbows on QF, which is very difficult to do on VA.

It was hot on board for most of the flight… rows 1-3 F were fanning or shading themselves from the fierce sun. But not one of them lowered the window shades. Odd.

Perhaps not so surprising as on very hot days before doors are closed I've been admonished for closing the shade on QF in Oz a few times. Contrast that with a pretty strong requirement in the US to keep them shut on hot days (on AA, in my experiences).

This was in flight! it was hot on the ground and hit in the air! During cruise the sun was searing. Only cooled off as we descended into MEL.

Oh sorry, missed that it was for most of the flight.

But then again I'm not so surprised - I'm often reminded that pax in J are not necessarily frequent or experienced flyers (no idea where the tray table is etc) so an instruction to keep the shades open at take off or on descent / landing may well be assumed by some to be a rule for an entire flight??

In any event your comment reminded me of a time flying out of SYD in January where there were a few delays because of excessive cabin temperatures. When we got to our gate we were told it was unclear if we would leave on time. Turns out we did but when we boarded all shades were open. If cabin temps are a problem it makes sense to keep shades shut but I have never seen that in Australia. OT I know.

HBA-MEL 10:20 flight on a 717. Options were bubble and squeak or something with polenta. I went with the former.

Looked terrible but was ok and a decent offering for that time of day. Sausage was poor but the bubble and squeak was pretty good and the beans and spinach very good. But the surprise in more ways than one were the rashers of bacon hidden under the squeak. Quality and tasty.

Wine no problem, with top up offered but declined. Friendly crew headed by Janine. All up a good flight.
