Qantas Business Class meals & menus

QF163 to WLG. Cold roast beef salad for me. Mrs Rugby had the chicken with sweet potato mash - 3rd option was pea soup. Enjoyed the lift in product, even though not at pre-Covid standard. The starter salad with halloumi was very good and we both enjoyed our mains. And thank god they found the cheese! Bit vague on the wines but a WA Xanadu Chardy, a McLaren Vale shiraz and a riesling. Champagne was good, whites not so hot, and didn‘t get to the shiraz. Good Kiwi crew - always the best (makes me feel better about get smacked by the All Blacks all the time)

Still hungry after breakfast and lunch in the SYD F lounge? 😂

But looks interesting. Hopefully similar on QF41 soon (although I don’t expect to see the shiitake mushroom dish 😉).

Has anyone recently been on QF7 SYD-DFW? I'm going in about a month and am trying to imagine how to spend these 18 or so hours of flight. Leaving here in the afternoon and then arriving roughly the same time but in DFW, that means dinner, then very quickly approaching darkness and then breakfast after a night time sleep I would imagine? Probably some quiches or sandwiches available in between but nothing else- would that be a correct assumption?

Has been a while that I've been flying on such longer routes on QF. Got too used to Qatar's anytime eating in the meantime so I better manage my expectations accordingly
I flew it in late Feb and it's pretty much like this, though going East it's less flight time. iirc it was under 15ish hours when I flew it, it was 14:44 total time (including taxi etc) so actual flight time was really closer to 14 and a half hours. Still a long time of course.

Anyway I had (somewhat) deliberately) stuffed myself in the Flounge trying all the Korean dishes, fried chicken and all that stuff, so I kind of waddled on board in a food coma. Mostly because I prefer the fresh cooked lounge offerings than on board catering. So IIRC I had a lighter "dinner" post take off of a soup course and dessert (iirc it was a fairly decent creme caramel), a few drinks and it was relax time with a movie or two and zone out. These routes are difficult with the time changes to try and manage a mix between leaving the departing timezone (where it's afternoon) and arrival (also afternoon) to try and get into the destination timezone (assuming that being US Central or East time).

IIRC there were some kind of snacks mid flight, but I think I was asleep. I seem to recall going for a stretch and seeing the usual mix of some fruit, chips etc in the galley area and there was a hot option they could offer, but I didn't bother. Strangely, offering a breakfast service at what was afternoon destination time was a little strange I guess but I guess most people's body clocks could treat it like a brunch.

The time actually flew (pun intended) more than I thought it would (while QF22 on the return (DFW-MEL) absolutely dragged - and not just because it was nearer 17 hours elapsed, but it just really dragged on for me and I was questionin g my life choices around hour 15, but that's a whole other story).

So, if you have Flounge access prior, then I'd suggest get a good meal in there, then you can go a bit lighter - if at all - after take off (and given QF international J usually drags a bit, it was still 90 or so minutes before food showed up so time for the food coma to settle a little bit).

I just can't get through that much food in one sitting!

QF11 SYD-LAX March 2023 (Vege/Vegan option).

Very impressed with the offerings, all were delicious and appeared to be carefully thought out.

Mix of pita & hummuses for the appetiser (Chickpea and eggplant maybe? With walnut and olives)

Mains were fantastic, definitely the highlight for me. Sliced creamy potato bake with cauliflower puree, peas, oyster mushrooms and artichoke.

Good breakfast. Corn fritters, beans, mushrooms and tomatos.

The return meals out of LAX (QF16) were nothing to rave about unfortunately, decent brekki still though. This was after their apparent menu update - if this reflects the update I hope they un-update it...

Appetizer (or not 🤣) served cold

Attractive (but ultimately bland) penne

A lame toastie (3 slices of differently coloured cucumber? And 3 cherry tomatos) - Attendant apologised as she put it down on the table. But was happy they at least packed a snack for me.

I rate the food out of SYD, very enjoyable. Not so much out of LAX though.

Presentation of those meals also looks like a vast improvement.

MEL-HBA 19:30, 737 service.

QF's obsession with quiche continues. This time pumpkin.

Lacked any taste whatsoever. Cheese plate the only other option. Very disappointing for a dinner flight, where there used to be a main meal.

Super quick flying time and the CSM did a good job serving everyone and offering a few rounds of top-ups (pretty light J load though).

SYD-BNE, “dinner” flight:
One of the worst delays in a long time, especially for a simple Domestic hop. 2 1/2 hours later than scheduled, everyone was really tired and quite full from the food in the lounge. As much as I hate the Sydney J lounge, these burgers were a welcome addition to the otherwise as per usual boring and pretty bad lounge food:

Once on board, the crew told us that they themselves had been waiting in the empty airplane for hours while waiting for the pilots who were running late due to some issue at Adelaide airport. Oh well.

Crew was lovely but clearly wanted to finally finish their shift so all a bit rushed. Choices were “Chicken” with sweet potato mash, the usual cold lamb salad (how long still!) and pea and mint soup. I’ve had the soup before but after five hours in the lounge munching away and my previous experiences with Qantas Domestic chicken (not good, usually), I decided for the soup. It was fine, came with bread and Pepe Saya butter and a nice Shiraz but really, not adequate for Business class imho. Lots of people decided not to eat anything as it was around 10pm at that point.

IMG_2855.jpeg

Crew kept filling my wine and even offered to fill the last bit into a plastic cup. So funny how some crews proactively offer that while others either don’t or, worse, tell you off for even asking such an outrageous question (had that only a few weeks back).

All in all a less than pleasant experience but not because of the crew, they were lovely, but rather the overall delay and boring selection of food. Nice Shiraz though!

Woah. Did they have trays of them to self serve, or were they constructed to order? (ala spice bar)

Had the same too. Must have cooked a batch 🤪 9 June 2023 QF630 MEL/BNE. Flight was delayed by 40 mins by the time we took off. Waiting for pilot to turn up from another flight running late! Quite tasty. Had the sparkling tho and not the “burn”. Something newish and fairly drinkable. Must not have had high expectations as FA told me it’s very reasonable at DM 😁. The FA was very nice n happy to offer stuff from the cart. IMG_0727.jpegIMG_0728.jpeg

At first, I spotted them on the long bar table (the one opposite from the buffet) only and they had little menus there with this “special of the day”. This used to be standard maybe 10 or so years ago but I hadn’t seen it since the pandemic.

I asked one of them staff for one and she brought me one out within a minute or two. However, a bit later I saw them simply stacking them onto the buffet space, next to the salad bar. So it was pretty easy to get but maybe only for an hour or so total- might have well missed those in the past or it’s simply a “new” thing.
