Qantas Business Class meals & menus

Some more J meals I've had this week. No photos for these. All were pretty good, and service was quick. I was always in row 1, but didn't seem too long before even row 3 was served. Drink orders for all taken fairly quickly after takeoff. 2 FAs did this and the trolley setup, which meant the start was fast.

SYD-DRW dinner flight. Choices were lemon chicken (hot option), or a cold pasta salad. I had the chicken. Was nice. Probably the same as posted upthread.

DRW-MEL lunch flight. A fabulous barbecue fish, with a soy and ginger sauce (I think). Absolutely delicious. One of the best dishes I've had in the air. I think the cold choice was a potato salad with either ham or chicken.

SYD-CNS lunch flight. Hot option was roast pork. Cold was another salad - can't remember but it didn't sound that appealing. Pork was tasty, but parts were a bit tough. Came with a slightly odd choice of veggies - warm marinated olives, capsicum, spinach. Still a decent meal.

Given length of flights are equivalent to the trans-Tasman ones it is hard not to compare. TT definitely better because of additional options. But these were all nice, tasty, and reasonably sized meals.

Lamb meatballs with rice and yogurt

I had this as the main plate on the supper overnight flight MEL-AKL the other day. Having eaten well in the F lounge I wasn't really hungry and didn't expect to finish given the mixed views expressed here. But I found it tasty. Yes, salty - but that's to be expected given there's feta. Only problem was there were big chunks of fat in the meatballs. A bit off-putting.

Date: 8 Oct 16
Flight: QF598 PER-BNE
Service: Lunch

Menu:

Drink service:
Vodka soda; almonds (served sans bag)
29559797464_2288202f65.jpg

Small plate:
Mushroom soup - was OK. Was given a spoon in the cutlery set that still had food on it... also, no water offered.
Wine: Clonakilla (whites offered: Riesling & SavBlanc... no S&S but I forgot to get the labels of the whites)

Main plate:
Greek yeeros (lamb) - was actually pretty good. They may have gone a little overboard on the seasoning for in-flight service, but was actually pretty good. Chips were a little ordinary...
Unfortunately, my own iPad was required to take up tray space for entertainment as the on-board AVOD had to be reset three times at 20mins each go () due to Qstreaming not working in Y (screen was working fine in J ).

Dessert:
Pear and passion fruit tart - was nice. Good pairing with the Muscat, not so with the dessert Riesling
Dessert wine: Muscat (not too bad at all) and a local Margaret River Juniper Riesling (a bit too sweet for me)

Chicken Kiev or cold Korean beef salad the options on the CNS-MEL lunch flight yesterday. I was chuffed to get the Kiev as this dish is a favourite of mine. Unfortunately didn't deliver. Decent portion and chicken was just about well cooked (on the verge of drying out but just saved). Unfortunately the filling was totally lacking in flavour. Veggies were also pretty tasteless -- so all up a disappointment.

What I really miss are the almonds and wasabi peas mix. Happily put up with the santos packets (pathetic for J) if I got these. But haven't seen for a couple of years. Half a dozen domestic and trans-Tasman flights so far this week with drink service and always pretzels and cashews. Even if they insist on the packets, how hard is it to mix it up?

oh the wasabi mix! yeah they were great!!! :)

BNE-CBR dinner flight last night (QF Link 717). Options were barbecue fish (same as I had ex-DRW the other day - a no brainer to have again - it was very good) or roast duck salad.

Crew were lovely but the dinner service was pretty amateurish - no pre-dinner drink despite crew waiting 10 minutes for Y and J meals to warm up; no proactive wine top-ups, last J meals served maybe 5 minutes before descent; only row 1 got offered coffee or a 2nd drink. It's a 1 hour 50 minute flight!

Brisbane to Melbourne had those dinner options last week, I went with the fish which was really nice.

Service was excellent.

I flew back on Sunday in economy. business had the option, of pea and ham soup, vegetarian dumplings or cheese, glad I saved the points on that flight.

Some Qantas 737-800 now don't have the curtain so from row 4 you get to see what is on offer.

CNS - BNE Friday - 7/10 - QF711 19:10pm departure

Chicken kiev. Same as one week prior. Not sure how regularly menu changes. Agree with Kermatu - unfortunately looked quite inviting but lacking in taste. (this time and also the week prior).

MEL-SYD 30 Sep 16 QF464 19:30 (Dinner)

I was originally on QF462 which was cancelled and I got moved to QF464 which was the refurbed A330. Needless to say I did not hesitate to use the points to upgrade my Y ticken on that flight, as I have never tried the new suites :D

On offer was the infamous lamb kofta (or meatballs) or a chicken ceaser salad. Yawn! Both options quite unispiring, to be honest. After reading reviews here about the lamb meatballs I was hoping the luck to get some on this flight would skip me... Anyway, I wanted a hot meal so decided to give it a go. It was OK but nothing to rave about. The greek yoghurt made the dish bareable. Wine offered was coonwarra red from parkes or S+S. The peacan tart was nice as usual but I seem to be getting it each time I fly dom J so it's getting a bit boring...

Service was quick as the J cabin was practically empty (AFL grand final Friday) but CSM said the MEL-bound service was chokers.

Overall, I would rate this meal service 6/10. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't amazing either. I was thinking QF (or Neil Perry) are perhaps trying a bit too hard to be fancy... There are many classic simple dishes that don't need to be fancy to be enjoyable... I'd rather be happy with a club sandwich or the chicken schnitzel sandwich they used to serve in intJ.

Nonetheless, the new business suite was nice and made the trip memorable. :)

OOL-MEL QF881 Lunch/refreshment

Quite a tasty fish dish I think it was barrumndi. Prompt service with multiple refills and extremely personable service

MEL-ADL QF697 Dinner
The infamous meat balls which I found pretty average. As observed above, the fat in the meatballs is really off putting so would probably avoid unless the other option was terribly uninspiring.

ADL-SYD QF1560 Refreshment
Beef toasted sandwich/jaffle already mentioned

SYD-OOL QF864 Dinner/refreshment
Due to engineering issues we had to offload and wait about 90 minutes for a replacement aircraft. When we boarded we were advised there was no catering in an effort to make up time.

Has anyone else had a similar experience where no catering was offered due to a technical/engineering issue? I understand these things happen but is it reasonable to ask for a form of compensation in this instance? If this was my first ever J flight I would be highly disappointed as the meal is part of the experience.

I had a similar experience where the delay, delay, delay, cancel, rebooked resulted in no catering. We were told we could show our BP in any food outlet in the concourse on arrival. I have no trouble with the delays etc as this was due to weather issues. I did, however, think it inappropriate to tell us to call in to any outlet when we were already so late: 2 1/2 hours for me and no time to stop and queue for junk food as it would already ber 2300 when I got to my final destination. I would have rather had some compensation offered some sandwiches etc put on board.

QF683 MEL-ADL J "lunch"

Beef, mushroom & pea jaffle. cheesecake for "dessert" - wine was a reasonable tassie Pinot Gris - I didn't catch the label
20161026_123336.jpg

Bread slice with a fried jaffle. 450 calories with nothing else done with it. That meal would be my daily calorie intake.

But I do like jaffles. Comfort food.

It means little or no thought has gone into the menu planning (to serve bread alongside a toastie).

I know a lot of folks prefer QFd cattering over AA F, but I'm not seeing it. The meal above would cost less than a dollar.

Agreed.

Have to say I've been very impressed with a couple of dinner flights CBR-BNE the past week in Y. Great boxed meals -- chicken stroganoff; large fresh salads etc -- far superior to the so called dinners in J on the MEL-CBR-MEL flights. Free wines and bonus of empty seats next to me on both flights (and the returns). Breakfast flights also offer a warm egg and bacon muffin.

Practically no different to J and several hundred dollars cheaper.

I still like J but Y is now a no-brainer for future flights on this route for me.

The bread doesn't have to go with the meal necessarily - it is a filler course. Sure it's useful for mopping up stuff if it were left over.

I don't see more (or substantially more) carbs in that meal over most other meals QF would serve that isn't a soup or salad, e.g. hot meals with rice, pastas, side of mash potatoes...

One time I flew AA the meal was three sliders - basically three small white processed bread rolls (untoasted), slice of Spam on each and a slice of American cheese. I know the price differential of AA F vs Y is smaller than that of QF, but.....

I guess we're zero-zero vision here - I can't see AA F (at least substantially) being better than QF J, and vv.
