Qantas Business Class meals & menus

From reading various threads on the forum, I have the impression that following the fallout from the "no vegetarian meals" controversy, vegetarian meals are usually now available as an option on QF domestic flights even without pre-ordering -- do I have that right? I'm asking because on most US airlines and international flights I've taken, the pre-ordered special meals are usually of a lower caliber than the 'normal' offerings in business class. Also, I do eat (and enjoy) dairy products, while the 'special' vegetarian meal is always vegan only. For these reasons, when I'm flying in a premium cabin I usually just take my chances with the normal business class menu, and am wondering if I should do the same on QF? I'd be grateful to hear about people's recent experiences of vegetarian offerings on the regular business class menu. Thanks in advance!
 
There has been a plant based dining option on all QF long haul flights Ive done recently, there wasn't one trans Tasman - the vegetarian guy across the aisle got the bread and chocolate, some fruit and the Y veggie option.

I was on QF631 (J) on the weekend, and lucky I wasn't ravenous.

I have never seen a pumpkin grain salad before, and let me assure you, it was about as tasty as it looks.

VA continues to outshine QF while they 'unwind productivity inefficiencies' and fail to focus on simple basics. The guy next to me got a pilot's meal, and the couple across the aisle was only offered cheese toasties (they looked well-fed, in any case).

Good luck with those productivity inefficiencies, QF! I would rather pay and get something edible.

Thankfully the wine masked some issues.....again.

To be honest, this looks better than most of the meat options they provide. I’d be very happy with this!
 
Red eye from PER to MEL last night. The lamb patty was really delicious (but small) and the veggies were good. I’m not a fan of ratatouille, but it was probably okay. I just realised the tray was taken away and I didn’t keep my melting moment shortbread!
What's with the sliced white bread??

Seems like every economy international flight I've had in the last 12 months has been beef and polenta or beef stew or chicken salad. It really is time for a menu change there!

Some changes coming across the network. They are over the next month or so. Some changes include:
- Introduction of a full 2nd meal service on longer flights (such as BKK/HKG/HND) in economy, with business to follow
- Introduction of full breakfast in economy on longer flights back into Australia (also from BKK/HND/HKG) and more hot choices in Business
- Premium ingredients being added across starters and mains
- In premium, cheese and biscuits increased to a larger serve, almonds during bar (same as J), ice creams on lunch/dinner flights and... no more side salad! This will now be an antipasto bowl.
- In economy there is a general increase in the portion sizes
- Domestic will see PDB on east/west (and all other long sectors)
- On domestic, 3 choices of meals throughout the day, one hot, one cold dish with a hot item and one soup (muesli for breakfast). Where a flight is double catered, the offering may be 2 choices (2 hots or 1 hot and 1 cold dish)
- In business, trays will have additional items on the tray appropriate to time of day
- In economy, some flights will have the bar available from 0900 instead of 1200 and the food offering improved to a hot item.

So double chocolate as standard in Domestic J and premium slop? Wasn't PDB standard on all domestic J pre-COVID?

Still no hot towel service I see. 😂
 
On QF151 MEL-AKL later, most of us in J declined lunch. I had eaten eggs Benedict in the F lounge (+🍾) and evidently most others had eaten a good breakfast too. Around 2 hours into the flight, the man next to me in 1D must have felt hungry and was served his lunch. I didn’t think Qantas did that sort of thing! However, turns out he was a QF engineer: a regular passenger and well known to the crew.

Any idea roughly when business will follow? Any chance it will be happening in 5 weeks?

While I think the 2nd meal service is great, I can't help but think about how these meals will be timed on 8-10 hour overnight flights given how long meal service can take on Qantas flights...

Are you able to share what flights that would be available on? (or even if it's route/duration based)

No date at this stage, but unlikely to be by then.

There is no change to the way the service is on the way back on overnight flights in J. It is still a breakfast card, there is just an additional hot item, so there should be no increase to the amount of time the service is given in J for breakfast.
