Qantas Business Class meals & menus

MEL-PER QF9 15:50 787 flight.
Sadly had to make a very brief diversion to Perth to say goodbye to a good friend. Scheduling and costs made QF9 the best option. Was an excellent flight. Outstanding service from CSM Ben and Nyemi (sp?) my main FA.

Usual PDBs and when Nyemi noticed I didn't finish mine she asked if I'd like something else after take-off, which was good.

Very generous chicken salad starter. Good flavour combinations and very fresh. Excellent.

Snapper was also very good. Tasty and quality piece of fish.

When QF get it right, they really can get it right. I wonder if your CSM Ben was the same Ben who provided excellent service on my recent SYD-HND flight. The airline has some great ambassadors in that role, in spite of so many other shortcomings inflicted by senior management.
 
I love using the 787 for the transcon flights PER-SYD/MEL-PER.

I may be wrong, but as those cabin crews are usually working through to/from Europe, they seem to be higher quality than the pure domestic ones - that's been my experience, anyway.
 
Most of the cabin crew on the domestic legs are predominately domestic from what I have seen and are usually dual certified on the A330 and 787.

PER-SYD 22:55 redeye A330 flight.
As posted previously was lucky to snare some pizza in the PER J lounge before the oven was shutdown ridiculously early. Exhausting 30 hour diversion from an already intense work and leisure schedule, so requested an early boarding which was very kindly agreed. As I boarded the pilots and (outstanding) CSM Darryl were discussing some engineering delays. Thankfully I was allowed to remain onboard and Darryl was terrific keeping me informed on what was happening.

Grateful for water and a snack. After takeoff was told the food options were potato soup or a beef, potato and mushroom pasty. We were also asked if we'd like a drink after takeoff while waiting for the meal, which I happily accepted.

Drinks and food all served directly from the galley. Much quicker than a trolley service.

Was expecting the pasty to be full of potato but it actually had a lot of beef and mushrooms. Was a tasty meal with the sweet chutney - enjoyed it. Service done within about an hour and a couple of walkthroughs before lights went out.

Other than offers of coffee no breakfast service, which is underwhelming (I've had redeyes in the past where there would at least be danishes or muffins offered).

Weather was favourable and pilots left it very late to get the cabin prepared for landing and then put the seatbelt sign on. Good flight and great crew, with Darryl the standout.
 
QF1952 - ADL-DRW
SDT: 14:10 - FT: 3:55
We had a bit of a delay because the passenger count was off. Meant to have 93 plus 3 infants but only 2 infants could be found. After many laps of the aisle the “missing,” infant was found wrapped up in the mothers lap and we were on our way.

Pilots were served first and then after the 2 crew having a cuppa, toast with chilli flakes the CSM retrieved from her crew bag and a chat the J service started about an 1.5 hours after we left. 3 choices. Southern Indian chicken curry, lamp shank in tomato sauce or Greek salad with lamp. With a roast lamb on the BBQ for my arrival I had the chicken. It was pretty good. The salad was also okay even if the salmon had dried out.

Maggie beer ice cream as usual for dessert. The CSM left it out to thaw for quite a while and as such was very soft edging towards melted but oh well.

Got in to DRW just behind schedule. There were a number of federal senators on the flight too. Not sure why. One in 2A behind me and 2 more in economy.

I asked on QF9 last month. The Australian crew were only doing the domestic leg. Now I realise I didn’t ask if, on other occasions, would they work PER-LHR.

I've never asked specifically, but I just know that on my last MEL-PER 787 run, the young FA was extremely excited to be headed to FCO for the first time.
 
I was in the PER J lounge the other night around 8pm and got a few slices, but it did look like nothing more was to be made. Several guests queried / commented / complained to staff subsequently. As I was leaving to board there was a guy at the front desk asking staff how he could register negative feedback.
This enhancement is an absolute joke given that there are 3 fully loaded redeyes leaving PER in the late evening, and the lounge is usually a zoo at this time.

I agree and I'd add that they pizzas short start going as soon as breakfast is finished. If you have a midday departure, for example, you basically miss out on any real food.
 
So just did two J-Class flights:
QF618 Melb-Brisbane @ 1.15pm-3.25pm
QF714 Brisbane-Cairns @ 5.25pm-7.50pm
Then I did the return on the same route. Catering/beverage service were the same:

Pros:
Great crew on both flights
Decent main course
Generous pours on wine/G&T etc
WIFI that streamed

Cons:
No pre-flight drink/water
No in-flight pre-meal drink, all came out as one service
Meal was under-catered, no side-salad, cheese, dessert (except for lazy block of chocolate)

I think Qantas needs to re-think their in-flight offering. Their catering is so undercooked and this with the additional investment they have been (apparently) making. Photos of both meals below. Would have provided a review on the flights back, but they were exactly the same with inflight service. Also, having spent some time in the Brisbane Business Lounge I can now see what people are taking about it being sub-standard. No self serve wine, poorly catered, and a small bar. The hard product is good, the soft one lets it down.

It’s been a very long time since I’ve had Pizza in the PER lounge but back then I likened it to focaccia with toppings - not my style of pizza
 
SYD-CNS 9:45 flight. Was offered bottle of water on boarding. Excellent service from CSM Irene but very poor meal offerings for a 3 hour 5 minute flight: Gruyere tart; bacon and egg Turkish toastie; or fruit salad. Seatmate had fruit salad - massive bowl, very little content. I had the tart.

It was tasty and well prepared but just inadequate (though I do note the muesli bar and a sweet danish was also offered). Irene did plate the toastie for pax behind me but it looked dry.

I wasn't actually too hungry as had lovely service from Mary in the J lounge beforehand - think she saw how exhausted I was so kindly offered to get me coffee and/or food. She brought me a plate of bacon, eggs and mushrooms straight from the kitchen - which was very sweet and appreciated.

CNS always seems to be a raw deal catering wise.

What do CNS people eat? Not much? 🙂

Sure, some business people don't eat in lounges (maybe they can't even make it to lounges, they just walk onboard), but the archetypical business flyer (especially those that QF think patronise them) often eat light meals, or whatever they can get. Some of them are probably conditioned to eating lunch at their desk, or having working lunch meetings, so no space for extensive meals.

They're also less likely to feel ripped off by a lacking meal service as it's (usually) not their money.

Imagine the once-every-few-years leisure flyer saving up for a four-figure business class flight only to get stuck on a 20 year old 737 with a bacon & egg roll for lunch. It's laughable for the prices being charged relative to economy.
