QF772 PER-MEL April 5 738 VH-VXQ "Redlands" sched 0950 actual pushback 0943 takeoff (06) 0950

First J flight after a longer than usual summer hiatus to the infrequent (for me) destination of MEL, sorely missing being able to do this trip on QF10. Nonetheless a good flight in the usual surrounds of a narrow body in the brave new world post covid, good service by CSM Jonathan and FA Angela.

Bottle of water for the PDB, prompt jacket hanging. Very efficient boarding process, pushed back early for the first time in living memory.

Pre lunch drinks swiftly served after getting up to cruise, had the Lois Lane blanc de blancs from the ADL Hills, better than average for its price point ($19 at Dan’s). Served with the usual Santos nibbles.

Lunch of beef curry with rice, tender enough meat but nothing more than AN would have served in Y back in the day. Good quinoa and burrata (or something in that ballpark) salad accompanied. The other offerings were pork and a salad of some description. Koko Black bar also which MrsDrJ loves, so stashed this in the bag to pass on to her.

Was very pleased though to see the Credaro Kinship chardonnay on the list. One of the best value whites from Margs, $35 on QF wine but drinks like something costing at least 50. Definitely worthy of a top up.

Late serving of the usual Maggie’s ice cream, good as always.

Chicken salad
Beef Tagine with pearl couscous

I've had both of them recently, on QF743, SYD-ADL (dinner time), and QF1265, BNE-MEL (lunch time). The chicken tasted better than it looked.

Beef was amazing.

Agreed. I thought it was really good. My wife doesn't eat much meat, but she was a huge rap for it and had it both times.

NTL - ADL
11.10am departure delayed by an hour. Breakfast served at 1230pm 🙁
I really didn’t want breakfast, but I was hungry.

Is that meant to be a cheese omelette? Looks like it needs a bit more time in the oven.

Even 11.10am is late for breakfast, but between that or a refreshment, probably split the difference with that dish.

Yes, it was an omelette, feta supposedly! It was solid, so definitely didn’t need more time in the oven. Was meant to have spinach, mushrooms and tomatoes as accompaniments.
I think serving breakfast even as late as 11am is ridiculous.

QF10 Both main and entree were average plus a bitter bowl of lettuce. Fish bit a little on the dry side and the sauce over-powering. How hard would it be for a few more crackers with the cheese a plate big enough to fit it on?!

Totally agree about the cheese plate @Daver6
I would need a minimum of 6 crackers to devour those cheeses.

I vote to bring back the cheese and dessert cart. The cheese can be presented to the passenger on a platter and access to a full line of crackers (along with quince paste, fresh and dried fruit). I suspect the wastage would be less than or just about the same as individually plating cheese plates, particularly if they allow cheese to be consumed at any time during the flight.

Add to that, the cheese was served way too cold No excuse for that either given we must have been three hours into the flight by the time it was served.

Poor cheese to cracker ratio is legitimately a major issue in Qantas J. Who seriously thinks 3 crackers is sufficient for that quantity of cheese?!
I can live with that many crackers (plus the biscuit). Not every bite of cheese needs a cracker (or any accompaniment). A rule of thumb I figure is about 1/3 of the cheese eaten alone, and the remainder eaten with accompaniments (fruit or nuts).

Obviously I'm in the minority (probably would court more company with a European, esp. an Italian or a French).

I don't often get the cheese plate (trying to be salt conscious, not successfully), as it often is in competition with dessert, but here's a few other examples from recent travel:

SQ Business - single packet of 2 crackers, grapes, quince/nut log slice

20241224_045244.jpg
LH First - five biscuits (oat, Jatz-style, water cracker, SAO-like cracker, classic cheese cracker), dried apricot, dried prune, fruit/nut log slice, walnut, pepitas, grapes (and before you ask, I think the "creamy" looking thing was butter, because it didn't taste rather cheesy!)

SQ First - two packets of 2 crackers, fruit/nut log slice, mixed nuts

Again, a classic cheese cart / cheese board or tray would probably fix all these (and be much nicer).
