Qantas, Cathay Pacific, or Emirates?

Hello,
I used to regularly fly to the US via Tokyo using Qantas direct to Tokyo from Perth and taking my pick with AA or JAL from Tokyo. Apart from a dated 767, the Qantas leg was bearable, convenient, time saving and good for my QFF programme. Qantas actually have a very nice lounge at Narita Airport. Regretfully, Qantas cancelled the PER - NRT flight. One can't even fly to Hong Kong on Qantas anymore because that has been cancelled too. Again, QF have a very nice lounge in Hong Kong. Who uses these lounges now I have no idea. A West Australian certainly can't use them. I use CX via Hong Kong to get to the States. Flying Qantas domestic to Sydney, ask yourself -"Why fly south of Adelaide to get to and from LA/New York?" Qantas had no idea about how to run an international airline out of Perth. They completely missed the mineral boom.

I only ever fly Cathay to North America: great in the air and on the gund. HKG is a great transfer point.

Qantas have no idea how to run an international airline. Full stop. Only SYD gets a decent range of flights and transfers via SYD are on a par with LAX ( a race to the bottom).

CX most definitely esp if you can afford J class. Don't bother QF via SYD/MEL. If cost is an issue and you have time, consider flying cheap to Bali and then fly CX J from Bali via HKG to LAX - much much cheaper.

Really? At least BNE and MEL have more than one QFi route available compared to the solitary SIN flight out of PER.

Agree with most of the posters that CX seems the obvious option, another one out of left field may be flying Thai Airways J class one stop via Bangkok (apparently Thai are resuming services to Perth in Jun 2013) - not sure if the connections or the prices work for you but may be worth a look.

Thankyou for this great tip!! I have booked our ski trip to nth America on business Bali-Vancouver for about $4000 ticket!:) Economy was going to be over $3000 at the time we are travelling.
Have booked virgin ADL-DPS with velocity points to get to Bali. Awesome! :p

Glad to hear that. I learned it from an AFF who suggested this. Neither she nor I actually tried the route. Can you provide feedback? I have looked into this on my last few trips but often the flight times don't work out. Price excellent though.

Will certainly give you feedback. Flight not until Jan. Bali connections not ideal so are just staying a couple of nights each way in Bali. Will be nice to have a day or two of warm weather before and after skiing!

Yes exactly. For PER it usually means a night at Bali. If it is for holiday I don't mind. For work trips that extra hassle of (dis)connection at Bali is a nuisance. The Bali HK leg apparently won't have flat beds but still is J on CX. Also CX lounges in HKG superb. For you, direct into YVR without LAX transit is a major advantage. Hope you have a good time.

Cx J DPS (bali) to YVR via HKG was awesome. What a cheap way to fly the family in J. All flights had the long Haul CX J product. We arrived in Whistler well rested and ready to ski! Unfortunately the CX fares from DPS are rising so may not get this opportunity again. :(

We flew back from Whistler on CX and agree. Superb service, great seat. Would be happy to fly with them again.
Our fares were AA Awards.
