Qantas CU - Platinum Visa

I must be missing something ... its not ringing my bell as a card I'd like to actually use.

30K points over 5 months without an annual fee is a good deal, and 'eligible purchase' seems pretty broad.

But the insurance looks really ordinary ... I skimmed over the T&C once I saw the clause that its only international, not domestic. All decent Gold/Plat cards from the banks and other financials offer this type of pretty basic insurance so nothing special here.

I might apply regardless, 30K is good, for free, and I'll use it at 1:1 earn in place of the EDR card for 5 months to gain the free points. 46d interest free is a PITA, so I'd revert to the EDR which is 55d interest free once the 30K points are safely in the pot.

Hmm this card is tempting. I need a non-amex rewards card but this card seems to be a good sign up and cancel card after 12 months. Especially since its not a Big 4. Also The travel insurance is pointless since I get my own anyways for international travel.

Anyone see any problems with getting this card and cancelling after 12 months for points?

Not really a huge problem unless you are planning on applying for a big loan in next few months. Banks seem multi applications in a short time as a sign you are i debt stress, if you want to apply for a mortgage in next 6 months not a good idea to have to many applications. Has no long term impact on your credit rating though.

What do you have to spend on each month to get the additional $5000 monthly bonuses?

Doesn't seem to be specified, so presumably an 'eligible' spend will be fine. I'm quite sure this 5 months dribbling out FF points thing is just a way to have you keep the card instead of cashing in the points and churning immediately. I suspect we'll see more of this.

On the final page of my application for Qantas Staff CU Membership...

Eligibility - Membership of the Credit Union is restricted only to employees and former employees of the Qantas Group of Companies and associated companies, the immediate family (partners, parents, children, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts and uncles) of existing Members and related organisations. I declare that I meet the eligibility requirements of the Credit Union.

Will give it a try anyway.

I signed up as i work in the industry (sell Qantas) but yet to recieve any information to even say i had joined or anything. it will probably be snail mailed.

Got a mail asking to sign a small piece of paper with my name on it (hand written) and mail it back, I assume it's to have my signature on record.

Strange that it's being done manually

got the same thing along with telling me my account was active etc. awaiting my savings card now.

now that i have all the stuff for online access ill start the CC app process.

This sounds like a good deal. Will definitely apply I think after cancelling Westpac card, couldn't see any minimum income requirements anywhere out of interest even though I would assume I would be fine.

Anyone see how long this offer will run for?

I like the insurance with this. Most cards these days limit the insurance to either using their reward points to book the international flights, or paying for the flights with the card.

For me hotels are the main cost for a holiday, so getting to 50% of the cost of a holiday with the card would be pretty easy to do.

A friend has joined them so i think I'll try me luck when i get back from Thaialdn and cancel my woolies EDR card and go for the 30K of points. That's halfway to a o/w biz flight to asia

I have just signed up to the Union, will wait for that information to come through and will then go ahead with applying for this card after cancelling my Citibank platinum with their devaluing of the Qantas FF points.

I have just received the booklets and account numbers.

Has anybody worked out if any of those savings accounts will attract a fee if they have no transactions and hold a nil balance.

as an update, got all my booklets etc with account numbers but still no savings card (wierd). Applied for the card and then yesterday was contacted for proof details etc. When they called was quite busy at work and unlike other companies they were happy to email me the details!

customer service is looking good so far.

Have recently signed up and no issues with them at all as yet, even their call centre seem to be very good.
