Qantas Delays/Cancellations

A388 VH-OQD is en route ex MNL after a period of maintenance with arrival in SYD

While not a D or C but I'll put it here....

Usually a QFA380 is ferried into Lufthansa Technik at MNL as another completes its maintenance.

However VH-OQE ferried as QF6007 HKG-AUH in the evening of 30May after dropping its freight and passengers on 30May as QF127 SYD-HKG Qf128 is not operating.

There is no A380 undergoing maintenance at MNL replacing VH-OQD which departed in the wee hours on 31May

Lufthansa Technik has a line maintenance base at DWC at Dubai South Aviation Centre but not at AUH

What's happening here?.

You are forgiven Quickstatus, because in all the problems QF has with its A388 fleet of 12, more often than not it is when there is one of the 12 in for maintenance, typically as you point out in MNL, and there's then an 'event' on any day between Thursday to Monday (inclusive) when the fleet is normally fully utilised.

Qantassource suggests OQE is undergoing maintenance at AUH?. Strange

If Lufthansa Technik can operate maintenance bases all over the world, I can't help but think and lament why could not Qantas Engineering?. As a brand it would have been second to none.

QF7 wasn't scheduled on Tuesday to allow these movements to take place.

The Thursday 1 June 2017 QF152 from AKL to MEL (B738 ZK-ZKH) did not take off until 0812 despite a timetabled departure of 0715, so it is arriving half an hour late at 0955.

Wednesday 31 May's QF12 B744 departed JFK at 1908 hours, 58 late and is expected to arrive in LAX at about 2215, 75 late. Naturally QF12's A388 is forecast not to depart until 2315, 45 late. QF16 from LAX to BNE is suggested as likely to depart at 0015 on Thursday 1 June, 55 minutes tardy with a 40 minute late Friday 2 June BNE arrival at 0650 hours. This should not delay Friday's QF15 from BNE to LAX, touch wood.

On Thursday 1 June, QF117, the second of the day from SYD to HKG departed at 1212 hours, 47 late with predicted arrival at 1945 hours this evening local time, 40 minutes behind schedule. Class leader of the A333s VH-QPA is the taskmaster.

QF1 is mostly punctual or extremely close to it ex SYD on its normally daily run to DXB and on to LHR but on Thursday 1 June, it did not commence pushing back until 1725 hours. It was quickly airborne at 1741 and is predicted to arrive DXB on Friday 2 June at 0145 hours, 80 minutes late. By cutting down the DXB stop and making up time on the second sector, it may still however be possible to arrive very close to time in LHR if previous observations are any guide.

The aircraft is VH-OQG, the same fleet member that was recently involved in the QF94 turnback to LAX after one engine failed, subsequent replacement of the engine that took about five days and then a six and a half hour stop en route to LHR in DXB due to a defective fuel gauge.

One wonders what the problem was this time.

UPDATE: QF1 is now predicted to arrive in DXB at its gate at about 0150 hours, 85 late with an hour late departure at 0310 - a quick, but not impossible suggested intermediate stop - with LHR arrival on Friday 2 June at 0735, 40 minutes late. Based on past observations, this may be optimistic.

A332 VH-EBM on QF6, the late night 2355 hours Thursday 1 June SIN - SYD departed at 0057 and took off on Friday 2 at 0115 hours, about an hour late with arrival suggested as 1055, 65 minutes tardy. It looks like forming QF19 (1205 hours SYD - MNL) so that may be delayed a little as typical turnarounds for A332s on international flights are 75 minutes and upwards.

In further on Friday 2 June 2017, QF23 (0950 hours SYD - BKK) at 1037 with suggested arrival 50 minutes tardy at 1730.

QF19 for MNL departed SYD 21 minutes late at 1226 - see the previous post.

Apparently the BNE Qantas terminal lost power this afternoon. Up to 90 minute delays and some flights cancelled with passengers moved to other flights. SYD and MEL most affected. Looks to be on schedule now.

Yes, there don't appear to be many delays now.

QF1793, the 1650 hours from TSV to BNE (B717 VH-YQT) was airborne at 1815, so arrival should be at 1943 hours, 68 minutes late.

QF633 and QF1382, the 1830 hours departures from BNE respectively down to MEL and northwest up to ISA have been cancelled. However it appears that QF1342, also oddly at 1830 out of BNE to ISA is operating.

Not quite sure how the passengers displaced from QF633 get home to MEL tonight as on a Friday night one might expect bookings to be heavy.

The delayed QF1 from Thursday 1 June arrived LHR at about 0809 hours on Friday 2, 79 minutes late. This should not adversely affect the departure of QF10 later today local time.

On Saturday 3 June 2017, QF1 was significantly late for the second time this week departing from SYD, which as noted above is pretty unusual. A388 Vh-OQE commenced its pushback at 1753, 123 minutes behind schedule, so estimated DXB arrival has become 0150 hours on Sunday 4, 85 late. Predicted departure is at 0325, 75 minutes late for a forecast LHR arrival of 0755, an hour late.

Friday 2 June's QF2 departed LHR at 2254, 79 minutes late, stopped in DXB on Saturday 3 from 0854 (84 minutes behind schedule) to 1117 (102 late) with Sunday 4 SYD arrival suggested as 0715 hours, 125 minutes late. This should not of itself result in QF11, 7 or 1 running late ex SYD on Sunday, touch wood.

Many thousands of kilometres away, Friday's QF12 B744 VH-OJS left JFK 65 late at 1915 hours in the early evening, arriving in the west coast's LAX at 2156, 56 minutes late. The A388 on the same flight number (QF12) then departed at 2313 hours, 43 minutes late with Sunday 4 June arrival suggested as half an hour late at 0650 hours.

QF16 encountered a huge delay in LAX with VH-OJS only departing five minutes ago as I write, at 0353 hours on Saturday 3. QF suggests it will arrive in BNE 235 minutes late at 1005 on Sunday 4 June, but a final time is not often known until the aircraft has become airborne. This will mean a delayed departure tomorrow morning for QF15 from BNE across the Pacific to 'mpvie city' LAX, as its timetable calls for a 1020 hours commencement of pushback. 1145 or later may be the amended departure time.

In turn, Sunday's QF11 across from LAX to JFK (assuming it is not cancelled) will be highly likely to be more than an hour late departing, and in turn QF12 from JFK on Sunday (and QF12/ QF16 on Sunday night ex LAX) may be late. If worst comes to the worst, QF15 might then be delayed on Tuesday 6 June ex BNE for LAX.

If I recall, Flyerqf has observed that when QF11 is delayed arriving at JFK, QF12 returning (the B744) tends to lose extra time 'on the ground' in the Big Apple. One assumes this is to do with losing its allocated slot.

As implied in the previous post, the Sunday 4 June 2017 QF15 departed BNE late - at 1259 instead of 1020, with same day arrival suggested as 0830 instead of 0620 hours. In turn, the Sunday QF11 across the USA is expected to depart at 1030 - 130 minutes late - for a suggested 1855 hours late arrival, 135 late. QF12 from LAX to SYD and QF16 (LAX - BNE) will hence be delayed on Sunday evening but QF, as per its usual practice, has yet to post approximate timings on its site.

On odd occasions QF has simply cancelled the transcontinental USA B744 QF11/QF12 sectors to try to get QF16 (and QF12) back to Oz at or closer to the timetable, but this is not without cost and other time penalties, means passengers have to be found spare seats usually on codeshare AA flights (which may be hard to come by in large numbers, although there are multiple daily departures) and other difficulties may include flight and cabin crew being 'out of position', as well as having to transfer freight and luggage onto (AA?) flights.

QF27 on Sunday 4 departed SYD at 1307 hours, 37 minutes late with same day arrival predicted at 1145, 35 minutes late.

QF1543, the early morning Monday 5 June 0615 hours BNE down to CBR (B717 VH-YQT) did not take off until 0722. A delayed arrival at 0854, 49 minutes behind schedule is likely.

Sunday 4's QF11 departed LAX at 1053 hours, 153 minutes late but is not far off JFK where arrival is estimated at 1845, 125 minutes late.

Continuing with Monday 5 June, LST looks to be fogbound as at 0950 hours with JQ731 having returned to MEL after some circuits near LST.

QF2281, the MEL - LST (Q400 VH-QOB) that is timetabled into LST at 0955 has been in a hold above DPO. As at 1005 it has yet to land.

UPDATE: QF2281 made it to LST, arriving at 1035, 40 minutes late.
