Qantas Delays/Cancellations

For whatever reason, QF93 on Friday 30 June did not depart until 1108 (113 minutes tardy) with predicted LAX arrival at 0805, 90 minutes late.

As noted above, I agree that an 'at gate' arrival of 0710 hours for an 0915 hours timetabled A388 departure should in theory mean a punctual pushback from the gate. It was not to be.

Thursday 29 June's QF11 departed LAX 72 minutes behind schedule at 0932, arriving at JFK at 1723 hours, 43 minutes later than scheduled. QF12 then departed from JFK 45 minutes tardy at 1855 hours, arriving back in LAX at 2131, 31 minutes late. This B744 then left on QF16 at 2356 hours (36 late) with Saturday 1 July arrival in BNE estimated as 0651, 41 minutes late.

Although Thursday's QF9 arrived DXB six minutes early at 2329 hours, it did not depart until 0238 on Friday 30, 63 minutes late, so arrival in MEL is suggested as 2205 hours, 70 minutes behind. This will make it impossible for QF9 on Friday 30 June to depart much before 2350 hours, probably the final departure - and a late one at that - for the 2016-17 financial year for QFi. Rather fitting, since QF9 has a highly variable but oftebn very poor timekeeping record.

My daughter was on that flight, I wonder too why it was delayed for over 2 hours

Unusually, I had a friend on this flight so I will (in time) ask them. It would be an exaggeration to suggest that there are delays every day on QF93 but it is rather hit or miss. Not as bad as QF9 to DXB and LHR, but not nearly as good for instance as the QF7 out of SYD for DFW.

QF19 departed SYD on Friday 30 June at 1302 hours, 57 late and is predicted to arrive in MNL at 1905 which would be 35 minutes tardy.

Yes, I shall my ask daughter also when she lands in LAX.. Its due at 8am PDT around 90mins late.

15 got into the gate late this morning. Landed on time with a short taxi into TBIT (QF11 pulled into TBIT just ahead of 15), however, Swissport left 15s bay full of equipment, so we spent 30 mins looping around the TBIT satellite construction site waiting for Swissport to come move their stuff.

Then they forgot to open the secure doors into the airside corridor to CBP and the first pax up opened the door while ignoring the express path booth staff telling him to wait, thus alarms set off.
Had to wait for security to come turn the alarm off before they could open the doors.

Himeno, terrific on-the-spot report with a 'new' cause of delay - most interesting - but may I suggest for the benefit of occasional AFF readers and first time visitors that where foreign situations have acronyms it might be prefereable to say 'Customs and Border Protection' in full?

Because the QF website showed a 'landing time' of 0555 (against the scheduled gate arrival of 0600 hours), this is a classic case of a delay that would go unreported were it not for Himeno's report, yet it is relevant to the ongoing operation of QF11 from LAX (the scheduled 0820 hours) to JFK. On Friday 30 June QF11 departed LAX 77 minutes late at 0937, arriving 51 minutes late at 1731 hours in JFK. QF12 is showing as delayed from 1810 to 1910 hours in its JFK departure but as this is written it is already 1925 hours.

On Saturday 1 July, QF118 from HKG to SYD (A333 VH-QPI) is arriving at 0930 hours, half an hour late.

VH-QPE on QF130 (PVG - SYD) should arrive at 1011, 61 late.

QF30 from HKG down to MEL is far worse, with A333 VH-QPH (the 2010 hours Friday 30 June that was in the sky at 2334) suggested as arriving at 1045 hours, 185 minutes tardy. This then looks to be forming QF37, the 1540 hours MEL - SIN that operates a typical three days a week, so it ought be unaffected.

The 0950 hours SYD - BKK (QF23) is showing as delayed two hours in its departure until 1150 but that time has passed. QF24 tonight back from BKK to SYD will also be delayed.

QF127 (1000 SYD - HKG, having become an A388 - VH-OQI - presumably due to school holidays) departed 33 minutes late with arrival suggested as 35 late at 1755. The second flight, QF83 was worse with departure 68 minutes behind schedule at 1158; arrival is anticipated 65 late at 1935 hours tonight but as always a better estimate will be obtained once it is in the air.

Later on 1 July, QF19 (1205 hours SYD - MNL, A332 VH-EBR) was off blocks at 1310. This is the third time in four days that QF19 (which this week is operating five days a week not four) has been or will be more than half an hour late into MNL.

QF485 (0905 hours MEL across to PER, A332 VH-EBF) was in the sky at 0949 hours; arrival should be at 1151, 46 minutes late.

At JFK on Friday 30 June as noted above, QF11 arrived late. QF12 departed at 1932 - 82 minutes tardy - but most unusually did not take off until 2217 meaning projected LAX arrival at around 0040 on Saturday 1 July, 220 minutes late.

It is the start, if I recall, of the '4 July' important holiday weekend in the USA so was there a huge bank up of flights at JFK waiting departure clearance from air traffic control, or some untoward runway incident?

The upshot is that QF12 from LAX to SYD is being held, it appears, so it will be at least two and a half to three and a half hours late arriving in SYD on Sunday morning, while QF16 to BNE, the B744 will be similarly late. In turn unless QF flew up a B744 from SYD to BNE, expect the Sunday 2 July QF15 from BNE to LAX to be late. As is more often than not the case, it looks like QF94 on Friday 30 to MEL will not be held for the QF12 JFK - LAX connecting passengers, meaning a 'scenic trip' for JFK - MEL passengers (presumably via SYD rather than BNE, although it depends on how many connecting passengers there are and the number of spare seats on each aircraft) that will add hours to their already lengthy trip.

QF's timekeeping on Australia - LAX - Australia flights is worse than competitors DL, UA or VA, or NZ for that matter, although it varies with some days almost perfect and others disastrous if one has a 'must do' appointment like a wedding, funeral, cruise ship connection or important business meeting at one's destination.

The DFW - SYD QF8 is expected to arrive 35 minutes late at 0640 on Sunday 2 July, while the delayed LAX - SYD QF12 (see above) should be in at around 0920, 180 minutes late.

QF24 (BKK overnight down to SYD) is a predicted 80 late with arrival at 0750 hours.

QF1468 (1030 hours CBR - SYD) has been cancelled, perhaps because fog is expected.

Sunday 2 July 2017 has B717 VH-YQY on QF1500, the 0730 hours scheduled arrival in MEL ex HBA not having taken off until 0937, so arrival will be shortly at 1042 hours, 72 minutes late. This is delaying departure of QF1501, the 0815 hours MEL - HBA by an expected three hours.

As a consequence, QF1502, the 1130 hours arrival in MEL ex HBA is expected to pull in at about 1410 this afternoon. QF1503 is showing optimistically as suffering a delay from its scheduled 1230 departure from MEL to 1430 for its trip southwards on the same route. Depending on rosters, others MEL - HBA - MEL flights later this afternoon may be affected, but at times there can be two B717s shuttling up and down.

A388 VH-OQF on QF93 (0915 hours Sunday 2 July MEL - LAX) did not become airborne until 1058. Arrival should be at around 0735, an hour late, which may in turn delay QF11 across the USA to JFK.

QF129 from SYD to PVG (A333 VH-QPD, the 0935 hours) was in the sky at 1046. It should pull in to the major mainland Chinese commercial centre at about 1925, 55 minutes tardy.

The 0950 hours SYD up to BKK, QF23 (VH-QPG) was airborne at 1108 and should be at its destination airport gate at 1725 late this afternoon local time, 45 minutes behind schedule.

QF15 longhaul from BNE to LAX, the 1020 hours B744 has been delayed an expected hour in its departure, meaning arrival at least 35 minutes late (0635 hours same day.)

A332 VH-EBV on the 1025 hours SYD - SIN was in the sky at 1120 hours. Arrival should be at around 1725, 35 late.

The 1205 hours SYD - MNL (QF19, A332 VH-EBS) departed at 1239 with arrival forecast at 1910, 40 late.

Continuing with Sunday 2 July and its surprising amount of unpunctual QFi departures from SYD, A388 VH-OQC on longhaul QF7, the 1230 hours SYD - DFW was not in the sky until 1407, having departed at 1347, 77 late. Arrival is predicted as 1410 hours, 70 minutes tardy.

Sunday 2 July's QF24 departed BKK at 1851, 41 minutes tardy. On Monday 3, SYD arrival should be at 0715 hours, 45 minutes behind schedule.

Saturday 1 July's QF12 left JFK at 1946, 96 minutes late, arriving LAX 111 minutes behind time at 2251. The A388 on QF12 (VH-OQA) then departed LAX at 0021 on Sunday 2 July, also by coincidence 111 minutes late, meaning projected Monday 3 July arrival in SYD at 0800 hours, 100 minutes exactly late.

QF16 from LAX to BNE did not commence its pushback until 0144 on Sunday (144 minutes late) meaning Monday 3 estimated arrival at the airport terminal at roughly 0805, 115 minutes late. This heightens the chances of the Monday QF15 (BNE - LAX) being delayed, especially if minor maintenance is required.

Given that QF is facing a higher level of competition across the Pacific than was the case even three years ago, but the overall demand for seats appears to be a little down, the far too frequent late running of QF12 and QF16 may be causing a little concern at Qantas HQ, because the higher spending travellers with tight deadlines and sometimes flight or surface transport connections at one or both ends may at times get annoyed, and spread their displeasure by word of mouth to business colleagues.

It is a difficult problem to solve because more than 95 per cent of the time, QF11 and QF12 (the B744 ex and to BNE) have to complete their scheduled USA transcontinental flights even when connecting flights such as QF11, QF15 or QF93 are delayed. As one other AFFer pointed out many pages ago, when 'the 11' (B744) is delayed in arriving at JFK, it appears that most times an even greater delay occurs to the westward-bound QF12 out of JFK, probably partly due to its loss of slot. In a worst case this can have ramifications as far away as BNE for the QF15 in two days' time.

A388 VH-OQI on QF128 (the first of the overnights from HKG down to SYD) is arriving on Monday 3 July at 0754 hours, 44 minutes tardy.

The HND - SYD QF26 (B744 VH-OJU) is predicted to arrive at 0926 hours, 61 minutes late. Competitor JL771 was most unusually 119 minutes late from NRT so perhaps there was a major problem at HND or NRT during the evening of Sunday 2 July. Whether JL or QF, it is very out of course for these NRT flights to run late: the route must surely have the best punctuality of any operated to and from Australia, in part because of the reputation of Japan for efficiency.

QF795 (B738 VH-VYI, the 0620 hours CBR - MEL that did not take off until 0748) is predicted to arrive at 0843 hours, 73 minutes late.

The 0630 hours MEL - SYD (QF404, B738 VH-VXO) was airborne at a delayed 0717 hours so arrival should be at about 0826 hours, 31 minutes past the allotted.

Monday 3 July is another day with quite a few QFi delays.

QF93 (0915 hours MEL - LAX, A388 VH-OQH) was 16 minutes late off its blocks; arrival is forecast for 0705, half an hour behind the timetable on the same day.

Departure was 44 late at 1019 for QF79 from MEL to NRT (VH-QPB - A333) with arrival suggested as 1950 hours, 50 late.

QF23 (0950 hours SYD - BKK, A333 VH-QPD) departed at 1025; arrival is predicted as 1730, 50 minutes behind schedule.

Although QF127 from SYD to HKG (A388 VH-OQI) departed just 11 minutes tardy at 1011, expected arrival is 1755, 35 minutes behind time.

The 1020 MEL - HKG (QF29, A333 VH-QPH) was off blocks at 1104; arrival is suggested as 55 minutes late at 1855.

The 1025 hours SYD - SIN (QF81, A332 VH-EBP) departed 72 minutes late and should be at its allocated gate in SIN at about 1810, 80 late.

Longhaul QF63, the 1050 hours SYD - JNB (B744 VH-OJT) did not commence pushback until 1229. The result should be a 90 minute late arrival at 1830, delaying the departure tonight South African time of QF64 until at least 2010 hours.

The 1205 hours SYD - MNL (QF19, A332 VH-EBQ) was again delayed, with departure 78 late meaning a likely arrival at 1925 hours, 55 minutes tardy. This is the fifth time in the last six QF19s that it has been (or will be) at least half an hour late. Yet for some weeks prior, this offering was pretty punctual.

Sunday 2 July's QF8 was just three minutes late in departing DFW at 2218 and was pretty much to schedule in taking off at 2238; arrival on Tuesday 4 July is predicted at 0635, half an hour behind.

On the domestic front, Monday 3 July sees QF1505 (B717 VH-YQY, the 12510 hours mid afternoon MEL - HBA that was not airborne until a very late 1703 hours) suggested as arriving at 1805, 100 minutes late.

....

Don't know about the JAL flight, but QF26 left gate 145 at Haneda, taxied a short way, stopped for about 10 minutes, Captain reported a problem with a fuel valve, part of the equipment that transfers fuel between tanks, went back to gate 145, issue fixed by engineers. Me and her were in 2J and 2K.

Thanks to Flyerqf for mentioning that QF26 does fly out of Haneda...... as per a following post, our flight did indeed leave from Haneda, no idea why I didn't pick that up yesterday, guess I was concentrating on the QF26 part, I'll blame jet lag. :)
