Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Although as noted above Sunday 6 August's QF23 should arrive BKK at 1744 hours (64 minutes late), tonight's QF23 has been delayed to depart three hours late at 2110. A possible cause is that the crew from a previous late arrival must have a mandated minimum rest prior to taking out the flight tonight. SYD arrival on Monday 7 is suggested as 0935, 185 late. A333 VH-QPI is the aircraft.

Monday 7 August has QF124 (0620 hours AKL - BNE Jetconnect-operated B738 ZK-ZQE that was airborne at 0706) likely to arrive half an hour late at 0845 hours.

QF129 (0935 hours morning SYD - PVG) should depart 65 minutes late according to the QF website, but given that the flight is being formed by the delayed QF24 from BKK that is not arriving until 0935 hours, this is optimistic. A better guess might be a 1050 hours departure, or later. QF130 on 7 August from PVG will therefore also be delayed in its departure tonight.

Sunday 6 August's QF28 departed SCL 55 late at 1425, so Monday 7 SYD arrival is predicted as 50 minutes late at 1830 early this evening.

On Monday 7, QF29 (1020 hours MEL up to HKG) is expected to depart 70 minutes late.

B717 VH-NXJ on QF1502, the 1010 hours morning HBA to MEL took off at 1042; arrival should be 32 late at 1202 hours.

Gee that looks awful. Has the entire panel been removed hence the black area?

That's actually pretty good. It's a panel that exists to smooth the flow at the wing junction. There's a cavity behind it, and then the aluminium skin. It's made of a composite of some sort. A panel replacement is way easier than repairing a hit on the actual skin of the aircraft.

As an aside, it's one of the panels I explosively removed from the aircraft back in 2008.

Continuing with Monday 7 August, QF93 departed MEL 115 minutes late at 1110 hours with A388 VH-OQE. Same day LAX arrival is estimated at 0805, 90 minutes behind. One assumes that QF11 (B744) will be held for connecting passengers to JFK.

Although QF15 had been estimated to depart 20 late at 1040, it did not do so until 1109. B744 VH-OJS should be at the LAX gate at around 0638, 38 minutes behind the eight ball.

The SYD - PVG QF129 pushed back 80 minutes tardy at 1055, with arrival tonight suggested as 44 minutes late at 1914 hours. This will delay QF130.

QF29, the 1020 MEL - HKG had been indicated as departing at 1130 but this has now been pushed back to 1300 hours, meaning HKG arrival at a claimed 1945 hours instead of 1800. As this aircraft genera;lly then operates QF128 (2015 hours HKG - SYD), it will also be delayed although by how much is unknown until QF29 takes off from MEL.

Surprising (and good) away from its major Sydney jet base that QF obviously was able to rustle up a replacement panel fairly quickly, as the delay was only c. 5 hours.

QF29 (despite the earlier QF prediction of a 1300 hours departure) commenced pushing back in MEL at 1230; arrival in HKG has become a suggested 1906, 66 minutes late. This should only delay QF128 tonight by 35 minutes or so.

Any insight as to why QF 29 usually continues to QF128?

I assume that because SYD is QF's main 'jet base', it may want the planes to rotate regularly through there for ease of maintenance, availability of the maximum number of skilled personnel such as LAMEs and so on.

Yes, it would be logical that QF29 forms QF30 but apparently generally not so.

HKG is home to a major maintenance workshop, HAECO, where QF has sent 747s to often for heavy maintenance (AA also sends their 777s there).

Continuing with Monday 7 August, QF10 from DXB down to MEL (A388 VH-OQA) looks to be arriving at 2129, 34 minutes tardy. This will marginally delay tonight's QF9 by a minimum 15 minutes as it is due to depart at 2255.

Murphy's Law may apply, but redwoodw, tonight (Monday 7 August) it appears that the delayed QF29 is forming QF30 and not QF128. QF30 is advised to be departing half an hour late at 2040 from the Asian centre of commerce.

QF705 (1700 hours CNS - MEL that was airborne at 1730 with B38 VH-VZU) should arrive 31 minutes behind schedule at 2051 hours.

On Tuesday 8 August's morning there is fog in ADL that saw MH139 have a missed approach at about 0805 and subsequently from what I can see divert, presumably to MEL.

QF732, the 0640 hours ADL - SYD (B738 VH-VXI) managed however to take off at 0747: arrival is suggested as 0941 hours, 41 minutes late.

As at 0825 hours (AEST), QF671, the 0640 hours MEL - ADL that was airborne ahead of time at 0644 - good effort - with B738 VH-VYB was holding northeast of ADL along with a few other aircraft including SQ279. QF671 is due into ADL at 0730 so if it manages to land it will be more than 40 minutes late.

UPDATE: QF671 landed at 0806 CST.

B744 VH-OEE transferred from BNE to SYD, taking off at 0857 and landing at 1008 hours. QF15 is not operating on 8 August.

Perennial tardy performer QF23 is at it again, with its 0950 hours scheduled Tuesday 8 August departure occurring at 1106; BKK arrival is forecast as 1715, 35 late.

QF29 from MEL to HKG is delayed until 1300 hours, the second time in the last seven days that it has suffered a lengthy delay. Last night, after arriving from MEL as QF29 at 1915 hours (75 late), B744 VH-OJU did not depart as QF30 until about 2230, arriving in MEL on 7 August at 0930 instead of 0740.

UPDATE: The expected departure delay for QF29 has changed to two hours and 55 minutes: pushback was expected at 1315 but it was not until 1348, 208 minutes late that QF29 departed. The flight is expected to arrive in HKG at 2010, 130 minutes late.

Unlike last night, tonight it looks to be forming QF128 with departure of this HKG - SYD flight suggested as 2145 hours,90 minutes late. On Wednesday 9, arrival should be at 0835 hours, 85 minutes behind schedule.

On Monday 7 August 2017, QF12, the B744 departed JFK at 1905, 55 minutes late, arriving LAX at 2152, 52 late. However despite in the case of the BNE-bound QF16 departing quite late, all three ex LAX to Oz east coast flights are showing as between five minutes early and 20 minutes late for their expected Wednesday 9 arrival.

Wednesday 9 August has QF128 (B744 VH-OJU) from HKG down to SYD estimated to arrive at 0905 hours, 145 minutes late due to the delay yesterday to QF29.

QF461, the 0845 hours SYD - MEL has been cancelled as has, much later in the day, QF456, the 1715 hours MEL back up to SYD.

Recently, 'another day' means 'another delay to QF23, the 0950 hours SYD to BKK', a maxim that holds true today with departure rescheduled for 1100 hours. Arrival is expected at 1725, 45 late, delaying (yet again) QF24 ex BKK tonight. In contrast, TG476 from SYD to BKK (the 1000 hours) has a good timekeeping record and today took off at about 1015 with its usual B744.

As implied above, QF11 and QF12 are not operating across the USA on Tuesday 8 August as QF15 was not scheduled ex BNE. Nor will QF16 depart LAX on Tuesday late night.

Continuing with Wednesday 9 August, QF23 to BKK did not depart SYD until 1136. Arrival should be at 1800 hours, 80 late.

QF569 (1725 hours late afternoon ADL across to PER that took off only about 10 minutes late, if that, at 1744 with B738 VH-XZA) should arrive at 2023, 43 late.

Yep was on QF23, got in at about 1810. Captain said delay out of Sydney was due to late arrival of plane from Shanghai.

Thanks Cossie: as always, on-the-spot reports are great. As a result, QF24 from BKK to SYD departed 86 minutes late at 1936 on Wednesday 9 August. Thursday 10 arrival is expected at 0811, 101 late. This aircraft will then operate back to BKK on the 0950 hours QF23, which should be able to punctually depart.

QF52 (2050 hours on Wednesday evening from SIN to BNE) is showing as 'delayed' until 2130, but appears to have been cancelled. It looks like A333 VH-QPJ that operated QF51 may still be in SIN. Confirmation would be appreciated.

QF51, the 1200 'high noon' BNE to SIN should depart at 1800 hours tonight, six hours late. This will result in arrival at 0020 on Saturday 10 instead of 1815 this evening. All departures ex SIN tonight are displaying as 'on time' but one will have to be delayed.

Thanks M1 for your continuing narrative in these parts of the fora.
I get the impression that the 717 (the ugly duckling of the fleet in terms of punctuality?) may be more on time these days? . I understand that it's impossible for one person to be totally across the fleet.
The airline is thinking of redeploying some of the 717 with additional J class to the BNE-ADL/CNS routes.
