Qantas Delays/Cancellations

...I get the impression that the 717 (the ugly duckling of the fleet in terms of punctuality?) may be more on time these days? . I understand that it's impossible for one person to be totally across the fleet.
...

Quickstatus, yes, with the exception of one day that I recall in recent times, the B717s appear to be operating more punctually. The MEL - HBA - MEL route is still not perfect but for QF it appears to have fewer flights running badly late.

On Thursday 10 August, QF81 departed SYD 28 minutes late at 1053; SIN arrival is predicted as 31 late at 1721 late this afternoon local time.

QF15, the BNE - LAX B744 pushed back 44 minutes late at 1104. LAX arrival should be same day at 0656, 56 late. The 0820 hours LAX - JFK as a result (QF11) is expected to commence pushing back at 0900 hours, 40 late.

...QF52 (2050 hours on Wednesday evening from SIN to BNE) is showing as 'delayed' until 2130, but appears to have been cancelled. It looks like A333 VH-QPJ that operated QF51 may still be in SIN. Confirmation would be appreciated.

QF51, the 1200 'high noon' BNE to SIN should depart at 1800 hours tonight, six hours late...

QF51 from BNE to SIN on Thursday 10 August has been cancelled. QF52, the Thursday 10 2050 hours SIN - BNE will instead depart at 2300 hours on Friday night meaning Saturday 12 arrival at 0830, 26 hours and 15 minutes late.

The 1240 hours ASP - MEL took off at 1330 (B738 VH-VYF) with arrival at 1633, 48 minutes late. It is windy in Melbourne.

There is air traffic congestion in MEL on Thursday 10 August - not unusual for weekdays later in the week around 1800 hours - so QF469, the 1615 hours SYD down to MEL that was airborne at 1650 (about 25 minutes late) should arrive with B738 VH-VZO at 1826, 36 minutes behind the timetable.

QF451 (VH-VZE) on the same route, the 1715 hours that was airborne at 1752 is pulling in at roughly 1928, 38 minutes tardy. The 1730 hours SYD - MEL, QF455 - B738 VH-VZX - should be at its destination airport gate at 1936 tonight, 31 late.

QF819 (1705 hours CBR - MEL that was in the sky at 1722, VH-VYH) appears to have been slowed down by ATC and is likely to arrive half an hour tardy at 1845. If I had a dollar for every time on the SYD - MEL route I've heard from the flight deck 'ah, folks, we've been slowed down due to a few aircraft ahead of us. We should arrive at xx_x. Apologies for the delay'....

The 1740 hours MEL - ADL QF693 pointed skywards at 1814; B738 VH-VXL is arriving at 1906 hours, 36 minutes late.

Thursday 10 August's QF52 (scheduled 2050 hours redeye from SIN to BNE) has been altered to depart at 2300 hours on Friday 11, more than 26 hours late with Saturday 12 arrival predicted at 0830 instead of Friday at 0615.

The NRT - MEL QF80 arrived a little earlier than its scheduled 0755 hours on Friday 11, but departure of QF79, the 0935 hours MEL - NRT has been delayed to an expected 1100, meaning NRT arrival will be most unlikely to be prior to 2025 tonight, 85 minutes late. This will in turn presumably delay either QF80 (NRT - MEL at a timetabled 2030 hours) or QF62 (the 2050 hours NRT - BNE.) The QF website is yet to indicate which it will be.

QF79 ended up departing at 1046 - 71 minutes late - and as above should arrive at 2025 in NRT this evening.

QF81, 1025 hours SYD - SIN departed only 14 late on Friday 11 but arrival is not forecast until 1729, 39 minutes tardy.

The B744 on QF73 is delayed a suggested 75 minutes in its departure to 1415 this afternoon, resulting in predicted same day arrival at 1040, 70 late.

Unfortunately QF2085 MQL-MEL has been cancelled. Thankfully managed to get on the last Rex flight leaving at 2005 albeit at a $500 cost :o

bosox76, you may have needed to get to Melbourne tonight and if so what you've done is perfectly reasonable, but if it had been me I would have either travelled on the overnight V/Line road coach via Donald tonght to Southern Cross, or stayed overnight at a cost of say $120 in a motel and travelled down by daylight V/Line coach and train, the latter from Swan Hill or in some cases Bendigo.

The V/Line single fare Mildura - Melbourne (economy) is $51.80 with an upgrade to first class on the train available for $8. If one is a pensioner or under 18 fares are half that.

Congratulations on Rex truly ripping you off. $500 for that distance is an outrageous fare, yet Rex want us to believe that it and similar country airlines 'cannot afford' the annual cost of screening (which to my mind at $750,000 an airport per annum it is deliberately misinforming rural Australia about.)

It must be 'pleasurable' if it's coming out of your own pocket paying almost 10 times the surface travel rail fare, although at times you may need to.

On Friday 11 August, B744 VH-OEE on the 1300 hours SYD - SFO (QF73) departed at 1501. Same day arrival is suggested as 1050 instead of 0930, 80 minutes tardy.

QF144 (1310 hours AKL - SYD) was only six minutes late departing but arrived at 1526, 36 minutes late.

Staying o/n wouldn't have been an issue as I could have stayed with a friend but unfortunately I need to be back tonight and also have a 0700 start in the morning.
Pleasurable is certainly one way of saying it. Thankfully on the 6 years I've been working in Mildura this has only happened twice. Delays yes but rarely cancelled. Cancelling the last one out always hurts though.

Also on Friday 11 August, QF456 (late afternoon 1715 hours MEL - SYD that was pointing skywards at a delayed 1816 with B738 VH-VXD) should arrive at 1930, 50 minutes behind time. It had arrived in MEL at about 1647, only 12 minutes late, on QF703 ex CNS so the cause of the delay from MEL is not obvious given what would normally be considered a generous time in which to 'reverse' the aircraft.

Due to the delayed QF79 ex MEL, tonight's 2050 hours QF62 from NRT down to BNE is predicted to depart at 2130 hours although this may be slightly optimistic if 79 arrives at 2025 as has been suggested. Saturday 12 arrival should be at 0725, half an hour late.

Although what was to be the 26 hours delayed QF52 from SIN down to BNE (A333 VH-QPJ) arriving at 0830 hours on Saturday 12, instead it looks to be coming in at about 1000 on Saturday 12 August to the BNE terminal.

The ex-NRT QF62 arrived in BNE at 0736 hours, 41 minutes tardy.

At least for domestic flights in BNE, I cannot see any of the fog-related delays to which Simo refers. By 'cannot see any', I mean 'no delays seem to be occurring.'

UPDATE: QF7 (1230 hours SYD - DFW TransPacific flight) departed bang on 1300 hours; same day arrival should be at 1335, 35 minutes behind schedule.

Although Friday 11 August's QF12 was only 27 minutes late in arriving at LAX at 2127 hours mid evening ex JFK, the (different aircraft) second sector to SYD has been delayed in departing by 75 minutes to an expected 2345. Sunday 13 August SYD arrival is predicted at 0705, 45 minutes tardy.

Proving that none of us can monitor every flight, one diversion that we have missed recording is that of the Wednesday 9 August scheduled 2320 hours LAX to BNE (QF16 B744 VH-OJS) that departed only 13 minutes late but diverted to NOU where it spent from 0550 to 0703 hours on Friday 11 at that airport prior to BNE arrival on Friday at 0820, 130 minutes behind time. The Qantas Source website did not list a reason: medical?

On Saturday 12 August, QF1877 (B717 VH-NXQ, the 1435 hours ADL - PER that took off on time at 1448) should arrive at 1658, 33 minutes late.

QF1 (1550 hours SYD - DXB - LHR) is often punctual but on 12 August did not commence pushback until 1802, so arrival is estimated at 0155 hours in DXB on Sunday 13. QF then suggests departure at 0320 hours, 70 late with arrival in 'The City' at a suggested 0745 hours, 50 late.

On Sunday 13 August, QF23 (0950 hours SYD - BKK, A333 VH-QPH) was showing as on time, but departure was not until 1014 and takeoff until 1740, an hour late.

Later on 13 August, A332 VH-EBV on QF579 (1400 hours mid afternoon SYD across to PER) is arriving at 1735, half an hour tardy despite having become airborne at 1415 which was more or less on time.

QF 1525 SYD-CBR scheduled 18:45 departure was delayed until 8pm due to warning lights in the coughpit. First was detected before pushback and engineer came onboard and gave the all clear, but at the runway threshold light came on again so we headed back to the gate. Looked like flight may be cancelled. Sat on tarmac for about 45 minutes until issue resolved and trying again (with success). Landed close to 9pm so 70 minutes late.

A few politicians onboard so no pressure QF... (Not that anyone was difficult or petulant - everyone relaxed and captain and crew did a good job).

The vast majority of the individuals mentioned would be in J whenever it was available on domestic flights, even for short hops such as SYD - CBR with say a B748. A complete waste of taxpayers' money.

On Monday 14 August, QF130, the overnight PVG - SYD should arrive half an hour behind at 0900.

On Monday 14 August, QF19 from SYD to MNL is estimated to depart 140 minutes late at 1425 this afternoon with arrival at 2035, 125 late.

QF7, the long TransPacific flight from SYD to DFW should depart shortly at 1315, 45 late, more or less concurrently with QF73 (the SYD - SFO B744, which has a nominal 15 minute departure delay.)

UPDATE: QF7 departed 80 minutes late at 1350 hours. Same day DFW arrival is predicted as 1356 hours, 56 minutes late. QF73 followed not long after, commencing pushback at 1400 even; arrival should be at 0950 hours, just 20 late.

QF19 departed at 1431 hours, 121 minutes behind schedule with suggested arrival further delayed to 2015 hours, 165 minutes late.

There is smoke haze in Sydney that www.smh.com.au reports is adversely affecting some flights. Quite a few SYD - MEL flights were an hour or so late leaving around lunchtime. The 1230 hours SYD - MEL, for instance (QF433, B738 VH-VZD) did not take off until 1354, so the inevitable result is a projected delayed arrival at 1512, 67 minutes tardy.

Continuing with Monday 14 August, QF4, the lengthy flight from HNL down to SYD (A333 VH-QPI) should arrive at 1844 hours, 74 minutes late. It took off at 1149 yesterday compared with its pushback time of 1100 so has lost time enroute, not helped by arriving in SYD at a very busy time. As at 1809 hours it was in a holding pattern off the coast.

QF28 (B744 VH-OEI, the 1430 hours Sunday 13 SCL - SYD longhaul that was airborne at exactly 1500 hours) was in the same hold as at 1810 and should be at its arrival gate in SYD at about 1845 hours, 55 late. Quite often this flight forms the evening 2045 hours QF25 B744 from SYD to HND, generally a well patronised flight and one that often arrives early next morning in Japan.

Many domestics have also been (or are as at 1820 hours) in holding patterns on approach to SYD. QF543, the 1635 BNE to SYD was very prompt and punctual in pointing skywards at an impressive 1645. After a hold in one of the usual positions above Singelton NSW, its arrival will not be until 1841 hours, 31 late.

QF2117 (1715 hours CFS - SYD that if anything took off early at 1721 with Q400 VH-QOU) should arrive at 1902, 32 minutes late. The 1715 hours PQQ - SYD was not quite so prompt becoming airborne at 1736 (Q300 VH-SBB) so its arrival is not predicted until 1906, also as luck would have it a very similar delay at 31 minutes.

The 1745 hours MEL - SYD (QF496) was in the sky at 1821; arrival will be at 1949 hours, 39 late for B738 VH-VXJ.

A332 VH-EBC, the 0700 hours early morning Tuesday 15 August MEL - SYD was still third in the queue for departure at 0804, so its scheduled 0825 hours arrival will become at least 0915 hours.

In the opposite direction, QF405 (0630 hours, A332 VH-EBR) took off at 0649 - only 10 minutes or so tardy - but arrival has been delayed until a suggested 0837 hours, 32 minutes late.

B738 VH-VXJ, the 0745 hours SYD - MEL was not airborne on runway 34R until 0840, so instead of the scheduled 0910 its arrival will become about 1017 hours, 57 minutes late.

QF2161 (0630 hours PQQ down to SYD that was not in the sky until 0739, Q300 VH-SBJ) should arrive at 0854 hours, 64 minutes behind schedule.

The 0845 hours from SYD up to TMW, QF2002 (Q300 VH-SBJ) was still only taxiing on 34R in SYD at 0947, so will be quite late.

The MCY - SYD QF1579 is arriving at 0952 hours, 37 minutes late.

Longhaul QF11 on Tuesday 15 August is predicted to depart 100 minutes late at 1130 from SYD with LAX arrival suggested as 0735, 65 late.

QF35, the scheduled 1145 hours late morning from MEL up to SIN is expected to depart mid to late afternoon at 1600 hours, resulting in arrival at a suggested 2155, 240 minutes (alternatively, four hours) late. This will delay a SIN departure tonight but so far the three that depart around 2030 (QF36 to MEL, QF52 to BNE and QF82 tpo BNE are all showing as punctual.)

UPDATE: QF11 departed at 1131; arrival same day has advanced to 0729, 59 late.

Continuing with Tuesday 15 August, QF2053 (1230 hours MEL across Bass Strait to DPO) that departed five minutes early at 1225 had a missed approach at the latter at about 1334. Timetabled 'at gate' arrival is 1335.

Q400 VH-LQD initially looked as if it could be diverting to nearby BWT, but by 1344 appeared to be again heading for DPO. Is there fog at DPO? It is rainy, the wind does not looks overly strong, humidity is at 98 per cent and the barometer is low.

QF2053 had a second missed approach at DPO at 1403 hours, but by 1420 was diverting back to MEL. The QF website at 1425 was incorrectly showing it as having landed at DPO at 1403 hours. Interestingly (although a takeoff not a landing) ZL3562 managed to point skywards from nearby BWT at 1407 for its MEL-bound flight.

QF577 (early afternoon 15 August SYD - PER, the 1250 hours with A332 VH-EBC) took off punctually at 1302. However with battling the winds, arrival is suggested as 1628 hours, 33 minutes tardy.

UPDATE: QF35 (A332 VH-EBR) departed MEL at 1539 (234 minutes late) so SIN arrival has become 2125 (210 late.) QF52, the timetabled 2050 hours this evening from SIN to BNE is expected to depart 105 minutes tardy at 2235 with Wednesday 16 arrival at 0805 hours, 110 minutes late.
