Qantas Delays/Cancellations

With QF94 arriving at an expected 1028 (88 late) on Thursday 11 January, the 1115 hours QF93 from MEL to LAX has been put back to 1215.

QF23, the 1030 hours morning SYD - BKK is departing at a projected 1315 hours, meaning arrival at a likely 1845 tonight, 155 minutes late. QF24 overnight back to SYD will inevitably be delayed.

The 1225 hours QF35 from MEL up to SIN should depart an hour late but arrive 50 late at 1815.

Due to the delayed departure of QF3 last night, the HNL - SYD QF4 on Wednesday 10 pushed back 44 late at 1044; Thursday 11 arrival is predicted for 56 late at 1826 early this evening.

In further on Thursday 11 January, QF23 departed at 1337 hours (187 minutes behind schedule) with expected BKK arrival at1830 hours, 140 minutes late, a slight improvement to what was predicted above.

QF93 departed twice as late as QF had predicted, at 1329 not 1215 hours, so this 134 minute departure deficit is quite substantial. Arrival same day should be at 0805 hours, 90 minutes late.

Wednesday 10 January's QF12 pushed back in JFK at 2055 hours, 175 minutes late, arriving in LAX at 2325 hours, 150 late.

The ongoing QF12 to SYD is predicted to depart Movie City at 0020 hours on Thursday 11, 110 minutes late and arrive in SYD on Friday 12 at 1005, 95 minutes behind the timetable. QF16 (LAX - BNE) is forecast to depart 135 late at 0135 with Friday 12 arrival suggested as 0905, 110 minutes late. The 2335 hours QF96 to MEL looks to be held for QF12 'connectors' and so 96 should depart an hour late with its B789, arriving MEL at a predicted 1100 on Friday, 50 late.

While some allowance for how it's winter in New York (and a severe one) must be made, QF at present has an inability to operate most of its LAX flights at anything close to the timetable. No wonder relatively new AFF member Townsend was frustrated today as he waited for QF93 to board far later than officially (and unrealistically) advised.

QF10 as noted above ex LHR on Wednesday 10 January was delayed by the substantially late arriving QF1. On Thursday 11, QF10 spent 125 minutes at DXB, being unable to cut down the stop as claimed earlier by QF, and departed at 0248. MEL arrival tonight at 2335 hours will be 130 minutes late so QF9 will be unable to depart until at least 0115 hours on Friday 12 January, 110 late.

QF12 should arrive on Friday 12 January at 1100 in Sydney, 150 minutes late after its journey from LAX. This is worse than predicted above.

However QF16 is not quite as late as forecast, with Friday 12 arrival in BNE likely at 0903 hours, 108 minutes behind time.

The Thursday 11 QF23 that departed SYD at 1337 as above (187 late) arrived BKK at 1904 hours, 174 minutes late and with a fast turnaround managed to depart at 2026, 146 late. On Friday 12 SYD arrival should be at 0946 hours, 136 minutes behind the timetabled arrival of 0730 hours. This is an example of how late running is gradually pared back.

Ansett, while QF is not immune from climatic challenges: fog and sandstorms in DXB (soon to be discontinued port for its own metal); severe winters in LHR/JFK/YVR and north Asia, and occasional typhoons in HKG or MNL plus even less frequently, cyclones in FNQ, generally it's probably fair to suggest that a smaller number of its flights are badly delayed due to 'weather': compared to Europe, parts of Asia or parts of USA/ Canada, our weather in Oz is pretty benign.

Also, some airlines on the list have a much greater percentage of international flights than does QF where limiting factors such as very congested overseas airports can create timekeeping difficulties.

QF's recent performance on its long haul routes has been distinctly unimpressive. Its medium length (international) routes (the typical 7.5 - 10 hour jaunt to or from Oz and northeast/southeast Asia) are also subject to quite a few delays. Punctuality on some competitive routes such as Sydney to Bangkok has declined dramatically in the last few months, and is poor compared to a carrier such as TG, nowadays a low profile operator. Even the QF major Sydney - Tokyo (Haneda) route has had a couple of overnight delays northbound in the last small number of weeks, which a year ago was not occurring.

On Friday 12 January, the 1250 hours B744 SYD - SCL is expected to depart at 1330 hours; arrival should be 45 late at 1155 same day.

UPDATE: QF27 commenced its journey at 1242, with arrival forecast for 1216 hours.

A332 VH-EBG, one of the two most often used on QF107/108 SYD - PEK and return due to larger galleys and suitable crew rest onboard is today on QF23/QF24 SYD - BKK and return, while the QF24 arrival that came in at 0947, 137 minutes late (A333 VH-QPG) is working QF107/108.

I like to see that broken down between Domestic and International ...

Domestic airline punctuality (and cancellations) by route (but only where there are two or more airlines competing) are published monthly by BITRE. However it would be extremely difficult to extrapolate from this as to (say) QFi's performance. I agree that it would be great to have international airline punctuality and cancellation percentages in and out of Oz published. The only thing that really matters is arrival times. Many airlines routinely add extra recovery time into schedules.

On Thursday 11 January 2018, QF9 (2325 hours MEL - DXB) did not depart until 0137 on Friday 12, 132 late. DXB arrival was at 0816 hours, 146 minutes late. Departure is hoped for at 0955, 85 late with LHR arrival estimated as 1410 hours, 90 late.

The afternoon of Friday 12 is unsettled in MEL with heavy rain to the east. Although it doesn't seem especially busy, there's quite a bit of holding occurring with QF439 (mid afternoon 1400 hours SYD down to MEL that lifted off at 1435, B738 VH-VXL) likely to arrive at 1611 hours, 36 late, thus losing about 15 - 20 minutes on the gate-to-gate schedule.

QF35 (1225 hours MEL - SIN) departed at 1313 with arrival forecast as 55 late at 1820 hours.

Once again (the third time in if I recall two weeks), QF25 has been delayed from 2135 tonight in departing SYD to 1435 hours tomorrow (Saturday 13 January), meaning arrival in HND tomorrow night at 2205 instead of 0500 in the early morning. Unacceptable! With a quick look I couldn't see any obvious reason for this, as QF64 ex JNB has arrived in SYD uneventfully. Presumably a B744 has failed.

As many AFFers know, QF flights to and from HND can only operate between 2200 hours and 0600 hours at the HND end, so this is one of the limiting factors.

Saturday 13's QF26 from HND down to SYD will be put back to a 2359 hours departure, a minute shy of two hours late.

Thursday’s QF128 was delayed overnight from HKG ago SYD. It has departed this evening and will arrive tomorrow morning almost 24 hrs late.

This is why QF25 is delayed overnight because they are 1 B744 short in SYD.

The overnight SIN - MEL first division, QF36, should arrive at about 0645 hours, 40 late on Saturday 14 January 2018 with A332 VH-EBR.

Friday 12 January's QF11 departed LAX 50 late at 0910 hours, arriving JFK 99 late at 1809. By teh looks of things there has been rain in new York while fog and flooding are predicted. QF12 back from JFK is predicted to depart 125 late at 2005 hours.

On Saturday 13, QF96, the B789 arrived MEL 35 late at 1045.

The 1135 hours SYD - HKG (QF117) is expected to depart 40 minutes late.

QF15 (1120 hours long haul from BNE to LAX) departed 81 minutes behind time; arrival - same day - is expected 65 late at 0705. This will see QF11, the transcontinental USA offering, delayed from 0820 to at least 0850.

B744 VH-OEG on the overnight delayed QF25 from SYD to HND departed at 1504, later than the hoped for 1435 hours. As a result HND arrival is unlikely prior to 2230 tonight: this may well push back tonight's QF26 from 2200 to about 0020 (at the earliest) on Sunday 14 January ex the Japanese major airport.

Sunday 14 January sees A333 VH-QPE arriving on QF30 ex HKG in MEL at 0709 hours, 34 minutes late.

Stablemate VH-QPB on QF98, also ex HKG but instead to BNE looks to be arriving at 0647 hours, 57 late.

A388 VH-OQB on the LAX - SYD QF12 should arrive at 1002 hours, 92 minutes tardy.

The 2320 hours ex LAX on Friday 12, QF16 (B744 VH-OJS) should arrive BNE at about 0857 hours, 102 minutes late.

QF11 across the USA is a problem flight for QF in that it often departs and arrives late, hampered as it can be by waiting for 'connectors' ex SYD and MEL. Saturday 13 January is no exception with LAX departure 55 minutes late at 0925; JFK arrival is estimated at 1728, 58 late. This will again mean a delayed QF12 ex JFK.

The weather in New York and around it does not assist. While today is -1 and sunny, other days have been marked by ice and snow while at other times of the year thunderstorms are a feature.

On Sunday 14 January, QF27 long haul from SYD to SCL is estimated to depart half an hour late at 1320 in the early afternoon.

A332 VH-EBA, the 1200 ('high noon') MEL - SYD took off at 1248, so arrival is delayed until 1358 hours, 33 minutes tardy.

QF27 did not depart SYD until 1349, 59 late on Sunday 14 January, so projected arrival has become 1203 hours same day, 53 minutes behind the schedule. This will slightly delay the returning QF28.

One of the longest established QF flights, 'the 3' (to use the delightful descriptor of one of our contributing aviators) on Sunday 14 January departed SYD 84 minutes late at 2059. Same day arrival is expected at 0955 hours, 85 minutes behind schedule. If these times remain accurate, then the 1000 hours timetabled QF4 from HNL back down to SYD will be delayed until at least 1110 in its departure.

On Monday 15 January 2018, QF12 should arrive SYD at about 0919 hours, 49 minutes late with A388 VH-OQJ.

QF6 from SIN to SYD (A332 VH-EBQ) should arrive at 1110 hours, half an hour late.

The delay to QF3 northbound yesterday has resulted in an even greater delay to QF4, which on Sunday 14 departed HNL at 1147 hours (107 late). SYD Monday 15 arrival should be at 1845 hours, 75 minutes late.
