VPS, this may not answer the gist ofyour question but this is the second consecutive day that B738 ZK-ZQF has operated QF171.
It looks like on Friday 9 March it was meant to operate QF151, the scheduled redeye at 2335 hours from MEl overnight to WLG where arrival should be at 0510 hours today. However that was cancelled.
This may have meant the crew needed to rest for the minimum number of hours which would be past 0930 this morning.
The 0930 hours QF171 did not take off until 1218 this arvo so WLG arrival is likely at 1748, 168 minutes late.
I've not looked up historical weather for Wellingtron but as you will be acutely aware today is benign though hardly warm at 17C.
QF suggests QF172 will depart from WLG at 1825 early this evening, 85 late and arrive MEL at 2035, 90 late. You won't make QF701, the 2020 hours MEL - ADL or even VA249, the 2040 hours. Fight for an hotel and please advise us as to which one QF gives you, transfer time that it takes and meal vouchers amount or other things.
Thanks - they did just announce another delay so there is now zero chance of getting to Adelaide tonight. Wellington is glorious today - sunny, cool and not too windy. Hope Qantas put me somewhere nice
