Qantas Delays/Cancellations

The bad news for HKG-SYD seem to continue, I just had a text message with the following content: "We've had to change your flight QF128 on 17APR at 2000 from Hong Kong...The app shows a delay in departure to 00.50am tomorrow morning...Not sure what the reason for the delay is, QF127 is only marginally late and I would have thought this aircraft forms QF128...

Peter78, great post so thank you. We love 'man-on-the-spot' ones.

Google confirms that QF128 will be delayed as you state. It looks to be the B744 VH-OEJ that should be about 48 minutes late arriving in HKG early this evening. There should be a B744 crew rested from yesterday's QF127, so agree: I don't know why the delay.

Happy lounge gawking and imbibing!

On Tuesday 17 April, QF63 (B744 VH-OJS) has just departed SYD at 1338, 163 minutes late for JNB where arrival is predicted as 1850, 110 late.

QF64 overnight back to SYD will be at least an hour late back into SYD tomorrow.

QF27 left SYD at 1357, 142 minutes behind time and later than predicted on QF27 bound for DCL where arrival should be at about 1310 hours same day, two hours late. The 1330 hours QF28 back from SCL can be expected to depart, all being well at approximately 1450 hours.

Affecting less people than the QFi delays above, but perhaps depriving some of a half-days work in ‘The Alice’, QF1937, the scheduled 0710 DRW-ASP has just landed in the red centre, approx 4 hours late. Sufficient ‘slack’ in the schedule means the service it forms, QF1941 ASP-AYE, should not be significantly delayed

You may mean 'AYQ' (for Ayers Rock) not 'AYE.' Thanks for man or woman on the spot report.

Adding to numerous long haul late running, Tuesday 17 April's QF7 departed SYD at 1418, 103 minutes behind the timetable.

QF81, the 1015 hours morning SYD - SIN departed 21 minutes late; arrival should be at 1720, half an hour late.

Having QF118 and QF128 going out at about the same time (and with similar flight numbers) caused some confusion last night.

QF118 was delayed for another 10min by three pax who had gone to the QF128 gate.
Suspect they were in the Qantas Club as the 747 pulled up to gate 15 and was thus visible, whereas the 333 was at Gate 29, on the other side and 2/3 up the main spine (about as far away as I've ever seen a QF jet)

The delayed QF27 that departed SYD on Tuesday 167 April at 1357 hours is showing as arriving SCL at 1305, 115 minutes late.

However the return working, QF28 is displaying as a 1330 hours push back ex SCL and an 1820 hours arrival in SYD. The claimed departure time is impossible. More likely is around 1450 hours.

UPDATE: QF has realised the error and is now showing a changed departure of 1500 hours for 'the 28', 90 late and an 1825 hours arrival in SYD tomorrow early evening, 95 late.

Continuing with Tuesday 17 April 2018, QF1, the 1555 hours SYd - SIN - LHR departed at 2035. Aircraft is VH-OQJ. This aircraft came in to SYD two minutes early this morning on QF82 ex SIn, arriving at 0658.

Was tonight's delay just due to maintenance being required, or some other reason?

It's listed in the GDS as "MECH - DELAYED ☨4.05B"
expected SIN departure for LHR at 0400.

Himeno, many thanks! What does the 'B' at the end of the hours and minutes of delay mean? (Although total delay was not '4.05' but four hours 40 minutes from scheduled departure, so it must have been released from maintenance at about 2000 this evening.)

Although the delayed Tuesday 17 April QF63 from SYD to JNB arrived at 1911 hours (131 minutes late), the returning redeye to SYD, QF64 did not depart JNB until 2303 hours, 233 minutes tardy. Hence this evening, arrival should be at 1810 hours, 195 minutes behind schedule.

'The 28' was also late out of SCL, departing at 1508 hours mid afternoon yesterday, 98 minutes tardy. SYD arrival today will be similar, at a projected 1815 hours, 85 minutes late.

QF128 departed HKG at 0049 this morning, a minute earlier than predicted. This B744 will arrive at 1140 hours, 285 late.

Opposite number QF127 is predicted to depart SYD 70 minutes behind schedule at 1145 hours, meaning HKG arrival at 1915, 75 minutes behind time.

QF73, also a B744 is suggested as departing SYD an hour late at 1345 this afternoon, resulting in a SFO arrival at around the 0950 hours mark, 50 late.

The delayed QF1 from yesterday stopped in SIN from 0239 to 0413, respectively 264 and 258 minutes late, withy arrival at LHR forecast as 1035 this morning local time, 220 minutes late.

Tuesday 17's QF11 departed LAX 53 late at 0913 but reached the gate at JFK only 10 minutes behind time at 1650 hours.

QF15 on Wednesday 18 April pushed back in BNE at 1036 hours, 26 minutes late with arrival in LAX said to be 0531 hours, 31 minutes late. In theory this should still - just - allow a punctual departure for the transcontinental USA jaunt of QF11.

Also on Wednesday 18 April 2018, QF127, the 1035 hours SYD - HKG departed at 1148, so arrival has been pushed back to a predicted 1848 tonight, 48 late.

Strangely it appears not to have taken off until 1211. Did something go wrong? Aircraft is B744 VH-OEH that arrived in SYD this morning at 0628, three minutes late on QF74 ex SFO.

In consequence, QF128 tonight is forecast to depart HKG at 2035 hours, 35 late.

QF73, another B744 departed SYD later than predicted, at 1404 (79 minutes tardy) with SFO at gate arrival suggested as 0956, 51 late. Aircraft VH-OEJ had arrived very late from HKG as this was the QF128 altered to depart at a predicted 0050 (which as above became 0049.)

Earlier today, the 1015 hours SYD - KIX (QF33) departed 34 late; arrival is estimated as half an hour behind the schedule, at 1940 hours. In turn QF34 (the redeye back down to SYD) is expected to depart 15 late at 2055.

On Wednesday 18 April, QF462, the 1900 hours MEL - SYD took off at 2124 hours, reaching SYD at 2235 (130 minut6es late.) QF497, the 2205 hours SYD - MEL was cancelled as the delegate denied it permission to take off after 2300 hours.

Thursday 19 April 2018 sees QF23, the perrenially late 0950 hours SYD - BKK having commenced pushing back at 1030. Arrival is suggested as 28 late at 1708 hours.

Adding a '4' to the flight number, QF423 (A332 VH-EBB, the 1000 SYD down to MEL that was in the sky at 1052) looks to be arriving at its gate at roughly 1205 hours, half an hour late.

The 1010 hours from MEL up to BNE, QF623 (B738 VH-VZW) did not take off at 1125, so arrival is unlikely before 1325, which would be 65 late.

QF581 (1025 hours SYD - PER that was in the sky at 1151 with A333 VH-QPF) should arrive at 1433 hours, 63 minutes late. No standout reason for the delay as it came in to SYD on QF24 23 minutes late at 0648 hours earlier.

While there may be all sorts of reasons why this aircraft is on a transcon, given that they're QF's "best" smaller widebodies (with a couple of extra features not on the A332s), it's a mystery why QF doesn't solely roster these refurbished planes on international flights. For instance QF19 rarely has an A333, yet it carries many businessmen and women.

If this aircraft comes back on QF582, the arrival scheduled at 2035, that isn't in time to operate (although not running tonight) QF3, the 1915 hours SYD - HNL.

In further on 19 April, 24 minutes late in departing was the case for QF73 ex SYD, but expected arrival in SFO has become 32 late at 0937.

Later on Thursday 19 April, QF493 (1915 hours SYD down to MEL) has been cancelled.

QF1520, the 1715 hours CBR - SYD that took off at 1814 hours (B717 VH-NXJ) is arriving at 1855 hours, 45 minutes late.

Earlier, QF9 arrived LHR at 0537 hours, 32 minutes tardy.

QF1493 (1735 hours late afternoon SYD - CBR short hop that was in the sky at 1911 with Q400 VH-LQB) looks to be arriving at 1954 hours, 84 minutes late.

QF16 should arrive in BNE (ex LAX) on Friday 20 April at 0637 hours, 32 minutes late.

The B789 on QF96 departed LAX 49 late on Thursday 19 so arrival in MEL on Friday 20 should be at 0900 hours, 35 minutes tardy.

A few days late here but I was on QF51 BNE-SIN on Sunday...which according to this was cancelled because QF123 took our plane.
What was wrong with QF123?

Whilst annoying, Qantas handled it as well as could be expected...bit of a delay when the decision was first made about one hour before the flight but then we were taken down the chute and arrived in customs again and collected our bags. Then we had to line up at the transfer desk for a hotel, I got the Next Hotel in BNE no complaints, with a $50 food credit. There was a bus supplied but it wasn’t due for another 1.5 hours, I was fairly near the front of the queue luckily, so I cabbed it in with another passenger.
Remember this was the last day of the school holidays and Commonwealth Games as well, there were even some teams on the plane.

In the hotel I had the phone on hold, iPad chat app on and finally after 45 mins the chat app replied, fly out in 3 days time was the offer! No thanks...The phone answered so I hung up the app and dealt with a nice lady on the phone who was unaware of my plane being cancelled, “that is 3 today she said”

She got me on domestic to MEL the next afternoon to link up with an Emirates code share EK405 to SIN, lost my pre selected seat and was 30 hours late in SIN but had no pressing appointments luckily.

The next morning at check out there was an apology letter and an email address to complain to, I asked about SC as it was booked on a double promotion, no reply yet, and a cabcharge voucher...I was going to train it.

I had a bonus night out in BNE with friends and was not charged for cancelling my hotel one night so I can’t really complain too much.

jastel, fantastic report so many thanks!

Flyerqf covered the QF123 situation to which you refer about three pages back. That A330-200 (A332) had to return to BNE after it had taken off. It was then inoperable, and as you know elsewhere VH-QPF (A333) also failed, part from other problems last Sunday. Not a great few days for QFi.

Interesting that you had to fly down to MEL which means they couldn't find you a seat (for which QF was willing to pay) ex BNE or SYD.

QF29, 0935 hours MEL - HKG did not depart until 1100 on Friday 20 April. Anticipated arrival has become 1815 hours, 55 minutes tardy. This may be A333 VH-QPH.

QF11, 0935 hours SYD to LAX departed 55 minutes late; arrival should be 47 late at 0707.

The 0950 hours SYD - BKK is badly late, having been expected to do so by 1115. This had not occurred by 1135. A333 VH-QPG should be the aircraft.

UPDATE: QF23 departed at 1142, with BKK arrival estimated at 1758, 78 late. This will delay the returning QF24 redeye.

It isn't good that QF23/24 are delayed so often, especially when rival TG with some flights as fairly old B744s is so punctual.

The 1210 hours SYD- MNL, QF19 has been delayed to an expected 1250.

QF73, the 1245 hours SYD - SFO should depart at 1330 hours. Longhaul QF7 is worse, with its 1235 hours departure delayed to an expected 1400, meaning arrival 65 late at 1405 same day. Logicallt this must result in some missed connections - one hopes not on routes with only one AA or other flight a day.

QFi's timekeeping ex BNE seems the best of the three major east coast airports; MEL is second best (and highly variable) while SYD is ...well at the bottom of the pile.

When so many Asian airlines can operate into and out of 'outstation' SYD so punctually, it's poor that QF flights are so often delayed, and often not just by a small amount that's picked up on a gate-to-gate basis.

In further on 20 April, QF19 departed 58 late at 1309 with MNL arrival suggested as 33 minutes behind schedule at 1903 this evening, which will marginally delay the redeye QF20.

The QF73 delay has extended to an expected 1430 ex SYD, 105 minutes behind time. This will push out SFO arrival until at least 1030 hours, 85 late.

QF27 (the B744 at 1135 hours from SYD - SCL) departed 68 minutes late at 1243, so arrival in Chile has become an expected 1147 hours, 37 minutes behind time.

UPDATE: QF73 pushed back in SYD at 1445, two hours late with SFO anticipated arrival at 1045 hours, 100 minutes past the allotted.

Coincidentally QF7 departed SYD 100 late at 1415; arrival should be also at 1415, 75 late (same day of course.)
