Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF1 on Monday 23 July did not depart LHR until 1358, 43 late. The Tuesday 24 PER stop was from 1400 - an hour late - to 1537 (67 minutes tardy) with MEL arrival at 2047, 52 late. QF95 does not operate tonight to LAX so no delay to it.

The badly delayed QF23 from Tuesday 24 July arrived BKK at 0112 hours on Wednesday 25, a little earlier than predicted but still 512 minutes late. It turned around and departed as QF24, pushing back at 0233, pretty much a standard turnaround for an aircraft of this size and not the hour that the QF software had predicted. SYD arrival is estimated as 1558 this afternoon, 388 minutes tardy.

QF23 is showing as on time ex SYD at 0950 hours but probably due to the requirements for a minimum crew rest period, not something QF can skimp on, QF24 tonight, the 1810 hours ex BKK has been altered to depart at 2100 hours. Thursday 26 July SYD arrival should be at 0910 hours, 145 late.

Whether due to Josh2's great point about QF408 from MEL (a connection that this morning arrived SYD at 0843, 18 late) delaying QF23 or other factors, the SYD - BKK - SYD rotation is probably QF's least punctual Asian flight (although lately QF19/20 to MNL and QF81/82 to SIN have been not great).

On the BKK route, the 1000 hours TG departure ex SYD has a superior on time performance to QF23, which despite being due out 10 minutes before rarely beats the TG flight to BKK.

QF33, the 25 July 2018 SYD to KIX should depart an hour late at 1115. The identically timed QF81 has the same delay: it is from SYD to SIN.

UPDATE: QF33 departed SYD at 1109 with KIX arrival suggested as 2021 hours tonight, 71 late.

QF11 has a good timekeeping record ex SYD but on 25 July it was 47 late departing at 1022, so arrval in LAX is anticipated at 07090 hours, 40 minutes behind the schedule.

QF16 arrived in BNE 31 late at 0636 hours with B744 VH-OEI but the flight it formed,QF15 from BNE - the B744 - departed 62 minutes behind time at 1112, so its LAX arrival is likely same day at 0702, also 62 late. In turn this will delay its transcontinental QF11, the 0820 hours to JFK.

The expected delay to QF81 has extended from an hour (1115) to almost three, as the further revised time is 1300, meaning SIN arrival at 1930 tonight, 160 minutes tardy. In turn this may delay one of the SIN - east coast A332/A333s tonight.

QF63 is expected to depart 40 late from SYD at 1135 hours for the long trek on a B744 to JNB.

The 1200 'high noon' QF51 from BNE to SIN should depart half an hour late.

QF97, the scheduled 1045 hours BNE up to HKG should depart at 1300 this afternoon with arrival likely at 1950, 110 minutes tardy.

It is quite unusual for QF15, QF51 and QF97 ex BNE all to be delayed. The ex-BNE QFi flights tend to be very punctual (exception: QF15, as QF16 can be delayed due to all manner of factors) unlike QFi ex SYd and MEL.

Another B744, QF27 SYD - SCL is predicted to be 35 late in departing at 1310, and 40 late in arriving same day at 1150 hours. This will marginally delay the returning QF28's departure.

In further on 25 July, the SYD - JNB QF63 departed at 1144 hours (49 late) with arrival suggested as 1740, 40 late.

QF27 was off blocks at 1329 (54 minuters behind the timetable) with SCL arrival estimated at 1133, 34 late.

A332 VH-EBP departed at 1340, 90 late on QF19 from SYD up to MNL, took off at 1352 and should arrive at 1948, 78 late tonight. This will delay the 2000 hours QF20 redeye back down to SYD.

QF97 departed from BNE much as predicted, at 1305 with arrival changed slightly to 1953 tonight.

The LAX - MEL QF96 (B789 VH-ZNB) should arrive on Thursday 26 July at 0905, 40 late. This flight is quite often tardy.

A333 VH-QPE had an enforced extra layover in BKK, probably because the previous day';s QF23 was shockingly late, so last nigfht it was altered to depart at 2100 instead of the usual 1810 hours. Actual push back was at 2117, so on Thursday it should arrive at about 0910 hours, 165 minutes behind schedule.

QPE looks to be heading back to BKK instead of the more usual QFi A333/A332 of allocating it a different destination, so the 0950 hours becomes an estimated 1040 hours departure, meaning arrival in BKK at a suggested 2735 hours, 55 late.

Once again tonight QF24 will depart late.

If anyone wants punctual travel on this route, TG is the carrier that largely delivers this.

Also on Thursday, QF11 is predicted to depart SYD at 1005, half an hour late for LAX.

The overnight HKG - MEL, A332 VH-EBG is arriving as QF30 at 0902 hours, 87 minutes late. This aircraft was delayed on Wednesday 25's QF508 from SYD to BNE and then on QF97 to HKG, arriving the latter last night at 1954 hours, 114 minutes late.

The delays started because EBG yesterday was on QF408, the 0700 hours MEL - SYD that was 18 minutes late arriving at 0843 but it looks to have 'subbed' for another aircraft north to BNE on 'the 508', which has a scheduled departure from SYD of 0800 versus QF408's scheduled SYD arrival of 0825.

It is to form QF79, the 0935 hours MEL - NRT that has been altered to depart at 1010 hours. To estimate a 1030 departure might be more realistic.

It is extremely unusual for an A332 to be on the MEL - NRT QF79. I have not monitored this every day nor looked up the flight's history beyond recent days, but an A333 has only ever been observed on this quite lengthy flight.

I think you might be having a Geoff Dixon moment.

Back in the early days of the 330, he apparently visited the coughpit of one of the aircraft, and whilst taking to the pilots, he asked about what they thought of the forthcoming arrival of the long range 330s...i.e. the 333s. Captain asked what he was talking about, as the aircraft he was on, a 332, is the long range version of the 330. That fits with the proven aircraft knowledge of management, but the only issue with the story is that nobody believes that Geoff Dixon would ever have talked to a pilot.

Very funny, jb747, but I wasn't referring to range merely to common usage. Point taken! Drive or catch the train and a taxi to his pub on Wagga Wagga's outskirts and recount that face to face.

The QF software is now showing a further revised departure of 1040 hours for the A332 QF79, so my guess of 1030 above underestimated the delay.

The A330-300 though longer has less range because fuel tanks are only in the wings. The shorter A330-200 is able to carry fuel in a centre fuselage tank in addition to the wing tanks and so has a greater range (and because it’s lighter than the -300

The great circle MEL-NRT is 500 nautical miles shorter than SYD-PEK. Additionally flight paths to NRT more or less follow the GC which is not the case with SYD-PEK (I think due to CHN ATC reasons)

A -300 regularly plies the SYD-PEK routes so I would think a -300 could easily then do MEL-NRT

Though I always wonder if these aircraft (-300) are operating close to max range and some lightening of the aircraft is necessary by reduction of lower or even upper deck freight

Also on Thursday 26 July, the 1045 hours BNE - HKG QF97 is predicted to depart at 1215 with arrival at 1915 hours tonight, 75 late. QF62 from NRT arrived at the same gate at 0542 this morning, 13 early, but is no longer there as the gate is next to be used by QF62 from SIN that is estimated to arrive at 1039 hours, 274 minutes late compared to its timetable of 0605 on blocks.

Last night QF52 (A333 VH-QPC) appears to have diverted back to SIN. It had taken off from SIN at 2118 hours on Wednesday 25 July but got to a point northeast of CGK, then returned to SIN, and again was in the air at 0118 for the flight down to BNE.

QF98 had arrived in BNE this morning 55 minutes late at 0800 hours, but at a different gate.

The projected delay to perenially late QF23 from SYD has extended to 1100 with resultant BKK arrival estimated at 1725, 45 late. This will make it unlikely that the 1810 hours redeye from BKK down to SYD can depart much before 1840 tonight.

On 26 July, QF23 ended up pushing back in SYD at 1114 hours with suggested BKK arrival 1742, 62 down. This will mean QF24 departing at 1855 or later, so at least 45 late ex the Thai capital.

QF79 from MEL left at 1103 (88 late) and should be at its NRT gate at 2020 tonight, delaying either QF62 back down to BNE or QF80 to MEL overnight.

BNE to HKG QF97 departed at 1215, 90 late as suggested but is expected at its HKG arrival gate a bit earlier, at 1854 (54 late) than was earlier predicted by QF.

The long SYD - DFW B744 offering, QF7 should depart 40 minutes behind schedule at 1315 and be 35 late arriving same day at 1335.

The 1210 hours lunchtime SYD - MNL (QF19) commenced its medium length trip at 1301 so forecast arrival has become 1855, 25 late although congestion on approach to that airport can be so bad that the actual arrival is 10 - 30 minutes later.

The B744 on QF73 (SYD - SFO six days a week) should depart 45 late at 1330 with a 50 minute late arrival at 0955 hours same day the forecast.

QF107 (1210 departure SYD up to PEK) is delayed until 1400 with suggested arrival at 2350, five minutes after the southbound QF108 is timetabled to push back. So the latter will be at least 80 minutes late departing.

One doesn't normally record punctual departures but QFi would be smiling if every flight was as timely as QF51 from BNE to SIN, the 1200 'high noon' departure that pushed back right on the knocker. Expected, but given the apparent difficulty in getting so many other QFi flights (particularly ex MEL and SYD) away on time, impressive as well. Hats off!

UPDATE: QF7 is further delayed to a predicted SYD pushing back at 1400 hours.

Something wrong with this one.

QF10 perhaps

Continuing with Thursday 26 July 2018, QF7 was off its blocks at 1407 in SYD, 92 late with same day DFW arrival suggested as 1417 hours, 77 late.

Wednesday 25's transcontinental USA flight commenced in LAX at 0905 hours mid morning, 45 late, arriving in JFK at 1719, 39 late.

The return QF12 was out of its JFK gate at 1908, 58 minutes behind schedule, arriving LAX 54 late at 2154.

On Thursday 26 July 2018, QF438 (1400 hours MEL up to SYD that took off at 1458 with B738 VH-VZA) should arrive at 1606 hours, 41 late.

The 1210 hours SYD - PEK has one of its 'usuals', A332 VH-EBL with the larger galley and enhanced crew rest facilities. It departed at 1423, a little later than the earlier amended 1400 hours, and took off at 1446. Arrival should be at 0017 on Friday 27, 122 minutes late, so hopefully QF108, the redeye timetabled to push back at 2345 hours should be able to do so at around the 0130 hours mark.

Continuing with Thursday 26 July 2018,
...QF12 was out of its JFK gate at 1908, 58 minutes behind schedule, arriving LAX 54 late at 2154.

The connecting QF12 with its A388 departed LAX at 2328 hours, 58 late so Friday 27 July arrival is estimated as 0735, 65 late.

QF16 pushed back in LAX at 0017 today, 57 late so Friday BNE at gate time looks to be 0654 hours, 49 late.

On their own neither of these delays should cause any for the international flights such as QF15 these aircraft form tomorrow.

Friday 27 July 2018 sees QF96 from LAX to MEL (B789 Vh-ZNC) suggested as arriving at 0923 hours, 58 late.

Are the runway and other works underway at LAX or gate unavailability reasons why this flight often runs late, or is it something else?

The 0645 hours BNE to TSV (QF1788, B717 VH-YQV) took off at 0735 hours so arrival is predicted as 49 late at 0934 mid morning.

B738 VH-VZB on QF419 (0900 hours morning SYD down to MEL) was airborne at 0950 on Friday 27 July so should arrive at roughly 1109, 34 late.

QF29, a flight that has recently been frequently late is delayed again with its 0935 hours scheduled departure occurring at 1019 hours. Arrival will be at 1750 or later, at least half an hour tardy.

'The 11' should depart SYD at 1010, 35 late for LAX.

QF23 from SYD to BKK was expected to depart at 1020, half an hour behind but is later than that in coming off blocks.

The quite long flight QF129 (0930 hours SYD - PVG) is predicted to push back 90 late with arrival tonight at 1950, 85 late.

Continuing with Friday 27 July, QF19 (1210 hours SYD up to MNL) departed at 1334, with arrival suggested as 2004 hours, 94 late. This will delay QF20, the redeye back down to SYD from 2000 to at least 2120 in pushing back. QF19/20 are mostly an A332 and today was no exception with VH-EBG.

EBG is one of the two QF A332s that should normally be on the SYD - PEK QF107/QF108 rotation due to appropriate crew rest and a larger galley on board, but this morning after arriving in MEL at 0855, 70 minutes late on QF80 ex NRT, EBG took off at 1043 hours as ferry (empty) flight QF6005, arriving SYD impressively quickly at 1147.

That QF had to send an A332 up empty this morning from MEL to SYD to form an international departure suggests that there is at least one A330 aircraft inoperable but not planned to be in maintenance today. The fleet seems to be overworked: great for shareholders in the short term but the number of tardy international A332/A333 flights is hardly optimal for an airline operator's medium and long term reputation.

QF11 got away 35 late, as predicted so should only be 17 late in arriving LAX at 0637 same day.

The 0950 hours SYD up to BKK, QF23, was 38 minutes tardy in pushing back with arrival predicted as 1716, 36 late. It has A333 VH-QPD that came in to SYD on QF140 24 late at 0854 ex AKL. Impossible for it to turn around in 56 minutes to be punctual in off blocks on QF23.

QF81 (1015 hours SYD - SIN) departed 106 late at 1201 hours, so it should be in the Lion City at 1825 hours early this evening, 95 minutes behind schedule. Class leader A333 VH-QPA is the aircraft. It has arrived 32 late at 0857 hours on QF130, the overnight ex bustling PVG, so getting it away on time on 'the 81' would have been challenging at this extremely busy time of the morning at SYD International.

Long haul QF63 was not expected to be late but this transpired. It was off blocks at 1152, 57 minutes behind schedule ex SYD. JNB arrival should be at 1800 hours, an hour behind, so QF64 tonight will be delayed.

Another B744, QF73 on the SYD to SFO 1245 hours departed 55 late with same day arrival likely as 50 late - 0955 hours.

Thursday 26 July's QF12 B744 departed JFK 49 late at 1859, arriving LAX at 2135, 35 late.

Are the runway and other works underway at LAX or gate unavailability reasons why this flight often runs late, or is it something else?

There are both runway/taxi works. TBIT terminal, from memory has at least 3 gates out of action as well. Therefore the QF96 is usually given a remote bay for boarding. This usually comes with its own set of issues given the distance from the terminal, the time it takes to get passengers to the bay, lack of buses (only 1 was allocated to the flight the other day), luggage. In addition, because of the location of the Qantas freight building, it also gets caught up in the transportation to the bay because of the works. The QF96 has also been held for JFK passengers on a few occasions.
