Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Also on Saturday 8 December, QF11 from BNE departed unusually late at 1203 (53 late) with arrival in LAX predicted as 35 down at 0635 same day.

A couple of times in the past, arrivals into LAX before 0600 have been slow to disembark due to late connecting airbridges - waiting 10min or so. I’m not sure why. One was QF15 and the other QF11.
While this is not significant after a long transpacific flight, when the seatbelt sign goes off, most people want to disembark ASAP - this being the most impatient time for a passenger.

I must also remark that the immigration process at LAX was extremely quick on Friday 7Dec18 after disembarking QF11. I picked up an orange express pass at the gate in LAX but didn’t use it. No queue for the autopassport kiosk and only 2 in the queue for the passport stamp. From aircraft door to baggage carousel was 12min. Normally the immigration section queue is very long. The blue Korean A380 was not there when we arrived.

Less flights in the morning into LAX?

In total from aircraft door of QF11 (SYD-LAX) , immigration, baggage carousel, baggage drop off, go up to departures level, navigate the zoo that is LAX departures, go up to mezzanine level security check (there were no premium lanes in security), and beep the boarding pass for JFK-SYD at the lounge was only 48 min. My last experience about a year ago, I had to go direct to gate for the JFK flight - and this was with an ontime arrival from SYD of the 11

A couple of years ago on my most recent visit, I also found immigration at LAX extremely quick: a queue of one person ahead of me and a pleasant officer who, while he didn't smile (I don't expect them to!), was not grumpy. Perhaps we were both lucky but maybe the criticism sometimes directed at this aspect of LAX is exaggerated.

You mean 'fewer' aircraft, as they are able to be counted.

I have no evidence for fewer jets numbers but the big blue Korean A380 was not there. Maybe we arrived late and it had already been towed away

Edit: seems like A380 KAL17 has been retimed?? to arrive at 0830. Hooray for passengers arriving into LAX before the big blue. And of course the venerable QF107 (SYD-LAX 747 ) is not plying that route either.

Sunday 9 December 2018 sees the overnight PVG down to SYD, QF130 (A333 VH-QPA) arriving at a suggested 1019 hours, 34 minutes late. This aircraft may be forming QF81 to SIN, the 1130 hours that is predicted to depart from SYD two hours tardy.

The afternoon SYD to HKG, QF117 should depart 35 minutes behind at 1625 hours.

Although showing as punctual a couple of hours ago, Sunday 9 December's QF29 (0945 hours MEL - HKG) has been altered to depart at 1040.

QF107 (1335 hours 9 December SYD - PEK) will instead depart at 1420 hours.

Longhaul QF7 from SYD to DFW has been delayed from 1440 to a predicted 1515 in pushing back.

It didn’t take off until 12 09, revised arrival around 18 14, 119 behind.

It’ll be interesting to see with the upcoming changes of this service on some days to a 787 if it does any better. This service usually gets delayed.

QF45, the 9 December scheduled 1725 hours MEL - DPS was off blocks at 1806, so this B738 (yuk!) is expected to arrive 33 late at 2103 mid evening.

B738 VH-VYI on QF462, the 1900 hours MEL up to SYD had not departed by 1950 so will be at least 40 minutes delayed.

UPDATE: QF462 was airborne at 2000 hours so arrival at 2109 will be 44 late.

QF627, also a 9 December flight but from BNE to MEL, the 1610 hours that was in the sky at 1707 with B738 VH-XZP should arrive at 2006 hours, 36 minutes tardy.

Yep. The PA is getting a workout in SYD. MEL has low cloud so a number of flights cancelled/delayed. I am one of the lucky ones. My QF495 is only delayed 15 minutes (0710 -> 0725) "at this stage".

Our original boarding of 0650 was delayed until 0705. Boarding announcement was actually at 0645. ATC must have said “Go! Go! Go!” :)

This may explain why QF404 (0630 hours MEL up to SYD) did not depart until 0653 on Monday 10 December with arrival of A332 VH-EBC suggested as 0828 hours, 33 minutes late.

If you arrive at the gate before 6am, they most likely will not connect the bridges at all. Immigration won’t generally allow any disembarkation prior to 6am....which is when their shift starts.

It’s luck of the draw with how busy the LA arrivals area is. Three QF aircraft arrive at similar times. There’s normally a Virgin 777, El Al, and a couple of others.

I prefer to be in another hemisphere when Asiana are around, but sadly they seem evident too.

A fellow passenger on one of those pre 6am arrivalasked the cabin crew to ring the airport to send someone to operate the air bridge. The wait was no more than 10min but it must have seemed a lot longer to him...

Does the airline have enough contingency to account for Aircraft/ground crews chucking a mondayitis sickie?.

Sydney trains sometimes get mass Mondayitis which results in chaos
