Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Friday 7th of Dec continues with a common suspect, QF29 MEL-HKG 9 45 service depart until 10 43 (VH-QPI). Arrival is suggested about 16 44, 29 tardy.

Pushback of QF11 occurred at 12:18

You were airborne at 1246, so suggested at gate arrival has become 0654, worse than my 0615 - 0645 estimate above. However often the QF software revises such times when cruising level is reached.

The BNE - LAX QF15 departed two minute early and is expected to arrive at LAX the same at 0558 hours.

QF153 MEL-AKL 12 15 service (VH-QPH) departed until 13 27, arrival is predicted around 18 48, 53 tardy. This should delay departure of QF158.

QF27 SYD-SCL 12 50 service (VH-OEJ) did not take off until 13 37, arrival is expected at 11 59, 49 tardy.

QF is (are?) asking pax in the lounge to fly forward as they are expecting delays out of MEL tonight due to high winds. I have moved from QF496 to 456.

'Is' is correct because there are not two QFs.

Surprising at a peak time that there are seats available. Only from 'no shows?'

Winds were gusting as recently as 1500 at MEL to about 57kmh but as at 1630 had moderated to 37kmh. Calm before the storm?

Northbound QF468, the 1615 hours ex MEL (B738 VH-VYA was blocks off at 1639) but took off at 1703 (a lengthy period between the two) so SYD arrival should be at 1818, 38 minutes tardy.

Additionally on 7 December 2018, QF452 (1700 hours MEL up to SYD airborne at 1753, A332 VH-EBD) should arrive at 1903, 38 late.

QF158 AKL-MEL 19 15 did not depart until 20 30, as advised that previous leg was running behind. Arrival is now expected at 22 08, 43 tardy (VH-QPH).
Also to note, MEL inbound flights are on holding pattern, making flight time a bit lengthier than usual

In more on 7 December, the 1915 hours QF3 (SYD - HNL) departed 44 late with its 0835 hours, same day predicted arrival to be 35 late.

At least they know about it prior to you boarding. Thank God there's a spare seat for you to move to. QF appears to have more IFE malfunctions than several other airlines combined.
I can confirm that my previously selected 11E IFE did not work. It appeared that the occupant of 11E was an upgrade. Poor chap tried most of the flight trying to get it working (at least the parts when I was awake)

Anyway 11A was good as I had use of the side compartments.

Hopefully doesn't occur too often, but that's one disadvantage of QF changing its LHR flights to two different aircraft types, as presumably it means it's more difficult (or impossible) to expeditiously substitute a flight crew member should one come down with a lurgi.

In theory there are sufficient people in town, but they are not on standby, so there is no guarantee that they can even be found. There are many issues that can stop a crew member from being flicked to an earlier flight. The most important after long sectors is simply sleep management. We all plan how we sleep to manage our expected flights. Suddenly bringing a flight forward by 24 hours, can mean you aren't haven't slept adequately. Rosters are also built in such a way that they often butt up against legal maximum hours. A flight that you can legally do tomorrow, may well be illegal today, across a number of the flight time rules.

Saturday 8 December sees QF94 from LAX to MEL (A388 VH-OQL) suggested as arriving at 1050, an hour late. QF35 is to be slightly delayed until 1235 (15 late) in its departure, assuming minimum turnaround.

As a comparison, yesterday QF94 arrived at about 1032 with QF35 departing at 1243, so the aircraft 'reversal' took 131 minutes. The best observed is about 98 minutes for any A380 in Oz, which would be a very good effort given the multitude of tasks: crew change, alighting and boarding passengers, freight and mail, cleaning, catering offloading and loading, fuelling and inspections.

QF81 (1130 hours SYD - SIN) is expected to depart 40 minutes late.

UPDATE: QF81 (A333 VH-QPF) pushed back at 1314, 104 late, so arrival has become 1750, 65 late.

QF35 on 8 December pushed back in MEL at 1302, 42 late with arrival in SIN predicted 31 minutes tardy at 1736. As QF94 had arrived at its gate this morning at 1044, today the turnaround took 138 minutes, seven minutes longer than yesterday. Statisticians would regard this as unexceptional, not an 'outlier' result.

In the end QF11 transcontinental arrived about 13 min early into JFK even after pushing back about 30 min late at 0850.

However the Uber into NYC was gridlocked and took me 1:15hrs to go to midtown Manhattan but it’s normal for a Thursday and Friday evening

The 787 cabin crew on my flight are BNE based and do the BNE-LAX (slip 2 nights) LAX-JFK (slip 1 night) JFK-LAX (slip 1 night) LAX-BNE (min 3 nights)

They also do BNE-MEL (pax, slip 1 night), MEL-SFO (slip 90hours!!)

QF1935, the 1050 hours ASP - PER on Saturday 8 December (B717 VH-NXL) took off at a much delayed 1352 with arrival at 1518 hours, 173 late.

Not so long ago QF announced substantial changes to its NT routes such as a reduction in CNS - DRW. There were some additions such as ADL - AYQ. Routes Online's website had a good summary. Not happy times for DRW !

Not Qantas specific, but there's been no departure from AKL international since 6:40pm due to smoke in the immigration/baggage processing areas.

Now All clear.

I'm on QF158, now delayed by 2:15
