Qantas Delays/Cancellations

On Tuesday 9 January 2019, QF63, the very late SYD - JNB (B744 VH-OEE) is arriving at 2319 hours, slightly later than expected and 404 minutes late.

Passengers on B744 VH-OJS must have had an unpleasant pre-boarding experience, as QF74D was meant to depart SFO at 2035 on Sunday night but departed at the most unattractive time of 0426 hours on Monday 7 January. Wednesday 9 sees likely SYD arrival at 1335 instead of 0610, 445 minutes late.

This delay was one of those 'classics' for all the wrong reasons: too short for a semi-relaxing hotel overnight, compounded by a departure time the worst of all, around 0430 in the morning when the majority of any population would normally be asleep.

The Monday 7 QF74 (VH-OEI) arrived SYD on Wednesday 9 at 0720, 70 late.

The SCL - SYD QF28 (B744 VH-OEF) should arrive tonight at 1840, an hour late.

QF79, the 0920 hours MEL up to NRT on 9 January departed 28 late with arrival expected 41 late at 1821.

The badly delayed QF64, the 1850 hours scheduled for Tuesday night 8 January has just departed JNB at 0151 hours local time on Wednesday 9 January, taking off promptly at about 0203 hours (1103 ARDT). Arrival in SYD has been further put back to an expected 2205 tonight, 390 minutes late.

With the arriving QF74D at about 1335 on 9 January, QF should have sufficient B744s (just) to operate today's and tonight's flights QF63, QF27, QF73, QF3 and lastly QF25, but the latter may have to be formed by the delayed QF28 ex SCL that as above should be at its SYD gate at about 1810 hours. B744 VH-OJU remains in HKG as far as I can see and has not operated a flight since 31 December 2018.

Adding to the woes of the much delayed QF64, QF63 on 9 January (1135 hours SYD - JNB) pushed back 59 minutes behind schedule so arrival is projected as 1735, an hour late. This will delay the departure of QF64 tonight (JNB time) by about half an hour.

Another B744, QF27 (1250 hours scheduled departure in the opposite direction, SYD across to SCL) is similarly delayed with pushing back expected at 1345 but arrival only 40 late at 1150 hours due to favourable winds.

UPDATE: 'The 27' pushed back in Sydney at 1355. Arrival has been amended to 1211, 61 late.

QF19 was significantly late yesterday and while today is not as bad, it remains unpunctual with departure at 1312, 47 late for projected arrival in MNL at 1814, 44 minutes tardy. This will delay teh 1900 hours QF20 redeye back down to SYD by at least 25 minutes in its pushback.

With SYD departures QF63 and QF27 an hour or more late today, on 9 January 2019 QF73 is adding to that list of B744 tardiness with its 1755 hours scheduled departure put back to an estimated 1900 hours. Arrival is predicted for 1320, 55 down.

In another B744 delay on 9 January, QF3 (1925 hours evening SYD - HNL) was off blocks at 2014 with arrival (same day) suggested as 0845, 45 minutes behind time. QF25, the 2135 hours SYD - HND was the only B744 out of Oz today operated by QF to depart on time.

Although QF80 arrived from NRT in MEL at 0747 hours on Thursday 10, 13 minutes early, departure of QF79 is to be delayed by an hour to 1020. Aircraft is A333 VH-QPF.

QF64 departed JNB 73 late at 2003 hours on Wednesday 9 with afternoon SYD Thursday arrival suggested as 1625, 50 minutes behind.

Another B744 that was also tardy departing yesterday is returning on QF28 from SCL to SYD, having pushed back at 1432 yesterday, 57 late. Arrival this evening is predicted as 1855 hours, 75 late.

QF94 from LAX to MEL is arriving on Thursday 10 January 2019 at a suggested 1108, 78 minutes late, so once again QF35, the 1220 hours MEL to SIN will be delayed as departure will be most unlikely prior to 1255 hours. Officially, QF says '1300'.

While the QF35/QF36 delays have not been as bad as when QF9/QF10 operated via DXB, what one had thought would become a rare event has instead seen 'the 35' reasonably often delayed, typically in its Lion City arrival by half an hour to 90 minutes when 'the 94' is tardy.

QF79 (MEL - NRT) has been further put back in its expected departure to 1130, 130 late so NRT arrival should be 1945 hours, 125 minutes behind. This will mean either QF80 to MEL or QF62 to BNE is late overnight back down to Australia.

On Thursday 10 January 2019, QF63 was again delayed, with departure of this scheduled 1135 hours SYD across to JNB at 1247 hours. Arrival has consequently become a predicted 1735, an hour behind. This will delay pushback for QF64 by about half an hour if all goes well.

QF81 (1130 hours late morning SYD - SIN) pushed back an hour late with suggested arrival at 1735, 50 late.

In more on 10 January 2019, QF71 (1225 hours PER - SIN) departed unusually late at 1443 with arrival on the cards for 2005 hours, 135 minutes late. It had arrived in PER as QF485 at 1029, 19 late so no apparent reason for the delay. A332 VH-EBD is the aircraft, although not so long ago if I recall, this flight was almost always an A333.

QF72, the 1910 hours ex SIN back to PEr has been changed to depart at an estimated 2120 hours for an 0235 hours arrival on Friday 11.

I had predicted QF35 (delayed by a late arriving QF94) would depart at about 1255 while QF predicted '1300' hours. Both were wrong, as it pushed back at 1356, 96 late with SIN arrival estimated as 1850, 105 minutes tardy.

A332 VH-EBC looks to be subbing for an unavailable colleague on QF769, the early afternoon 1305 hours scheduled Thursday 10 January MEL across the continent to PER as by 1909, it had yet to depart. This aircraft arrived MEL at 1719 on QF772, 79 late, ex PER so quite some tardy flights today.

UPDATE: QF769 took off at about 1918 with estimated arrival in PER at 2030 hours, 380 minutes late, making a very long day for anyone travelling.

As a result QF768, the 1515 hours mid afternoon PER back to MEL is also hours late with an 0400 hours Friday 11 January arrival likely as departure from PER is not expected until 2120 tonight, and even that may be optimistic as sometimes the turnarounds there take longer than 50 minutes. 0400 is a shocking time to arrive in a place: too late to usefully go to bed if one has work or another morning activity, and way, way too early to check into an hotel unless one booked the 'previous night.'

One hopes some booked on it have been able to transfer to earlier flights but during January school holidays these are probably full or very close to it.

What is the issue with QF146 ex AKL cancellation today?

From what I can see it looks as if A332 VH-EBA arrived on QF119 ex BNE in AKL at 1416 this afternoon, 14 minutes early but it has since been stabled at AKL. So either there's something wrong with it that's been discovered since it arrived in Auckland, or perhaps less likely, insufficient crew available to operate QF146 AKL - SYD and hence it was cancelled. Not a very helpful reply I know - sorry.

makes sense. friends travelling back from Bora Bora affected. Not having a great time with the hotel allocation either as a CX flight returned around the same time with an issue that has them all staying the night as well.

Did your friends receive a complimentary overnight hotel room from QF; if so, which one and where? Have meals been included? What date and flight (or time) are they rebooked onto - QF, JQ or another airline?

Or in the end, as you imply, were no hotel rooms said to be available and hence it's sleeping on the AKL airport floor for them tonight?

they got sent to a hotel that was already full... not sure where or what the alternate will be. At the moment they are being told they will return on the same aircraft with a 0730 departure tomorrow AM. Getting a bit late over there now.

More problems for the QF B744 fleet with QF75, the 1915 hours SYD - YVR on Thursday 10 January 2019 departing 75 late. Estimated arrival is 1535 hours, 90 late.

QF62, the redeye from NRT down to BNE is optimistically predicted to push back at 2220 hours, 170 minutes late with arrival at 0825 hours, 165 minutes late. This aircraft at this stage is forming the 1150 hours BNE up to SIN tomorrow - QF51 - so that should mean other A330 QFi departures ex BNE in the morning are unaffected. Occasionally aircraft allocations may change later.

The delay to 'the 62' is because today's QF79, the 0920 hours, departed MEL at 1303 hours with NRT arrival at an estimated 2120 hours, 220 minutes late. An hour turnaround to form QF62 at 2220 ex NRT is possible but this seems to take a minimum of 65 - 70 minutes with all guns blazing.

UPDATE: QF62 departed NRT at 2235 with BNE arrival on Friday 11 at 0811 hours.

QF36, the A388, departed SIN on Thursday 10 at 2101, 81 late, arriving MEL on Friday morning at 0716, 76 late, but this should not adversely affect the departure of the 1055 hours QF93 to LAX thanks to the generous turnaround allowed in the timetable.

On Friday 11 January 2019, B744 VH-OJU looks to be returning from HKG after maintenance as QF6016 with SYD arrival suggested as about 0942 after taking off last night at 2207 hours.

Later on Friday 11 January 2019, QGF27, the 1250 hours lunctime long B744 flight ex SYD to SCL departed an hour late with same day arrival estimated at 1208 hours, 58 late. This will delay the returning QF28's pushback and probably its arrival at Sydney tomorrow late afternoon.
