Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF425 SYD-MEL cancelled this morning - I was meant to be on it but was advised at the airport - not happy! :)

and I have absolutely no idea why it got canned.....

So now have 3 blooming hours to kill in SYD lounge - and the bar isn't open yet!!

Also on Tuesday 7 January, QF7, the 1440 hours SYD to DFW with A388 VH-OQC pushed back 61 late with arrival suggested as 1531, 36 minutes tardy. On two other days during the past seven, this long flight has been more than an hour late arriving in Texas. Is it delayed connecting flights from elsewhere in Oz that are causing this?

I notice that QF29 (MEL-HKG 789) was delayed from 0935 to 1137 this morning; expected arrival is ~90 mins late. Hope it is more punctual tomorrow when I am on it..

Yesterday, as noted above, it was cancelled so it is not having a good run. Still, each day differs.

Media reports on Wednesday 8 January 2020 indicate that QFi is "considering" routing its northbound QF9 (PER to LHR nonstop B789) via an unspecified Asian city for refuelling given that other airlines are avoiding Iranian/Iraqi airspace.

The southbound QF10 that has the benefit of more favourable winds will apparently be unaffected and continue to operate as normal.

A refuelling stop northbound together with additional air kilometres might add about three hours to the trip to LHR, eliminating much or all of any time saving from MEL, SYD and other east coast Australian airports compared with using QF1 or QF35/QF1 via SIN.

QFi will not want to be the proverbial shag on the rock continuing to fly via airspace that the United States' aviation authority decision makers have deemed a 'no fly' zone.

CASA previously approved an 18 hour 50 minute flight crew duty limit for QF9. An intermediate stop would push that way above, so will pilots have to overnight in Asia?

One Internet site report identified operating QF9 nonstop with 90 fewer passengers, but the QFi spokesman implied that this was not the favoured option.

Passengers will not be happy as despite arguably having poorer on board service than Asian competitors, QFi charges a significant premium in fares for what may now be a one stop, not nonstop, PER to LHR northbound.

..and today.. it is already showing a 30 min delay

A few minutes ago, the QF website only showed a 10 minute departure delay to the '29' but a 45 minute delay to QF79, the 0920 hours to NRT with expected arrival for the latter as 1810, half an hour behind.

Bad luck comes in threes, whughes3.

QF9 on Wednesday 8 January pushed back in PER 27 minutes late at 1947 hours with Thursday 9 expected LHR arrival showing as 0600 hours, 55 late, so at least for this trip, any slight rerouting is not adding a large amount of tine to the journey.

On Thursday QF8 arrived in SYD more than an hour late. Despite the greater than minimum allowed time to 'reverse', QF11 is expected to depart half an hour late.

Wednesday 8 January's QF55, the mid evening BNE to LAX B789 was cancelled as was QF56 that usually arrives back in sunny BNE on Friday.

QF29 did indeed depart about 30 mins late (plane did not arrive at the gate until about 9am); However we were blessed with a very quick flight time and arrived in HKG 20 mins early.

Friday 10 January 2020 has QF79, the 0920 hours MEL up to NRT again delayed with departure 23 minutes late and arrival expected half an hour behind at 1810 early this evening.

The B744 on QF63 (1135 hours SYD across to JNB) pushed back 69 late, so expected arrival is 1726, 51 behind, meaning a likely slight delay to the redeye QF64's departure.

B738 VH-VZP is on QF624, the 1510 hours MEL to BNE up up and away at 1605, so arrival is suggested as 1701, 41 behind.

QF818 (B738 VH-XZG, the 1530 hours afternoon MEL up to CBR that did not become airborne until 1626) should arrive at 1716 hours, 41 late. There's no obvious reason for this delay as the B738 had arrived on QF616 ex BNE in MEL at 1449, 19 minutes late so in theory it had plenty of time to turn around for a timely pushback.

QF2213 (Q300 VH-SBJ) is the 1530 hours SYD down to ABX airborne at 1609 hours, so predicted arrival has become 1726 hours, 41 late.

Media reports - Nine Group - today indicate that QF9 is diverting via Afghanistan until further notice due to the Iran/Iraq situation and hence is flying with 90 fewer passengers, so a maximum number of just 146.

Plenty of room to stretch out on the empty, but narrow Nightmareliner whY seats if one is still conveyed.

My guess is that it is whY passengers who will bear the brunt of this.

The majority of QFi QF9 users to LHR originate in PER not MEL so how is QFi rerouting those affected?

On Thursday 9 January, QF9 departed PER nine late at 1929 hours, artiving in LHR at gate at 0538, 33 late.

Friday 10 saw it depart MEL 43 late at 1733 with the PER stop estimated as 1845 to 2010, the latter being 50 late with suggested Saturday 11 LHR arrival at 0600, 55 late. As every day is different, this net second sector loss of just five minutes is possible, but unlikely as the extra distance in the diversion must add flying time.

The QFi spokesman says no decision has yet been made as to whether in order to operate with a full payload, QF9 will stop in an Asian city to refuel.

Ditching 90 passengers must make QF9 unprofitable despite the high QFi fares.

As noted above, return working QF10 is unaffected, meaning an imbalance of passengers on the route.

Other media suggesting that the Ukraine International Boeing was shot down, however inadvertently, by a missile make this a serious ball game as initial reports simply indicated that a technical problem was the crash's cause.

Friday 10 January's QF9 arrived PER at 1838 hours, 48 late, pushing back for LHR at 2009, 49 behind. Saturday 12 arrival is expected at 0625, 80 late, so an additional 31 minutes for this trip compared to the timetable. In the other direction, QF10 departed LHR 19 late at 1214 hours and should arrive at gate in PER only 15 late at 1245 hours. The combination of favourable winds and what may be a slack timetable with the usual padding means that for QF10, the diversion via Afghanistan seems to have no adverse effect on keeping the timetable.

Advice from any AFFers booked on 'the 9' re rerouting would be great.

Qantas CEO Joyce boasted in 2018 that these flights had been 'profitable from day one.' For QF9, this can no longer be true.

How long these QFi diversions continue will depend on the geopolitical Middle East situation and the attitude of the USA'S FAA.

Friday 10 January saw QF12 push back in JFK at 1827 hours, 27 late, with predicted LAX arrival 40 behind at 2145, meaning the onwards different aircraft QF12 to SYD is likely to be slightly delayed.

QF19, the Saturday 11 1225 hours SYD up to MNL is suggested as departing 45 late so arrival should be 1800 or later, half an hour behind, meaning a small delay to the 1900 hours redeye QF20 this evening.

QF79 that at this time of year is the daily 0920 hours MEL to NRT used to have a very good to excellent timekeeping record but lately it has become poor.

On Sunday 12 January, it departed MEL an hour late with suggested arrival 55 late at 1835 early this evening local time. On occasion this can form QF62 to BNE, not QF80 back to MEL but there is no discernible pattern.

QF 2289 MEL-LST cancelled for tonight.A couple of medicos starting tomorrow in a bit of a flap.
