Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF11 (A388 VH-OQE) on Friday 17 January was formed by the diverted via BNE QF8 that arrived in SYD at 1036 hours. Hence the LAX flight did not depart SYD until 1321 hours with same day arrival suggested as 0734, 94 late. On past observations, the 0820 hours B789 across to JFK will be held for the many connecting passengers. I've not done this transfer, but observations suggest that switching planes for patrons and their checked luggage can be achieved in around an hour when all goes swimmingly.

The SYD to MNL QF19 departed 77 late at 1342 hours with arrival estimated as 1835, 65 down, meaning tonight's QF20 (the 1900 hours) will be tardy.

On its last legs, QF107 (1335 hours SYD - PEK) is predicted to push back 40 minutes late.

UPDATE: QF107 is forecast to arrive 65 minutes behind schedule.

QF9, the Friday 17 January 1650 hours MEL - PER - LHR is suggested as departing 40 late.

The 1600 hours afternoon SYD - MEL, QF447, has B738 VH-VXM with predicted at gate arrival 1809, 34 minutes behind.

QF43, the often punctual SYD up to popular DPS due out at 1650 hours departed on Friday 17 January at 1819 with arrival said to be 2109 hours, 69 late.

UPDATE: QF44 departed DPS at 2316, 116 minutes tardy, arriving SYD on Saturday 18 at 0816, also 116 late.

QF20 pushed back 77 late in MNL at 2017 for SYD Saturday at gate arrival of 0733, 73 late.

QF922, the Saturday 18 January scheduled 0900 hours morning SYD - CNS was not airborne until 1003. A332 VH-EBL will therefore be arriving at 1145, 40 late. This A332 had arrived in SYD at 0642 hours, 32 late on QF568 (redeye ex PER) so in theory it had plenty of time to turn around for a punctual '922.' Only one of this aircraft''s previous 10 trips has been less than 15 minutes late arriving with delays raging to 65 minutes. Not good.

QF34 from KIX down to SYD (A333 VH-QPC) is the 1900 hours Friday departure in the sky at 0009 hours on Saturday, so at gate arrival should be 1107 hours, 267 minutes late. The reason is that yesterday QF33 ex SYD did not take off until 1502 hours mid afternoon, subsequent to arriving on QF130 at 0912, 28 early as QF130. It is not normal for an 0940 timetabled arrival to form an 0935 scheduled pushback.

QF94 (A388 class leader VH-OQA), the 2250 hours LAX - MEL on Thursday 16 January did not depart until the unpleasant time of 0205 on Friday 17. It is diverting to SYD, where arrival is showing as 1235 hours on Saturday 18, but at 1206 was holding offshore in the Tasman Sea. QFi suggests departure for MEL will then be at 1320 - perhaps optimistic based on past such unplanned intermediate stops - and arrival in MEL at 1505 hours mid afternoon, 315 minutes behind schedule.

As a result, the 1210 hours lunchtime QF35 A388 from MEL to SIN is estimated to depart at 1700, arriving at 2150 hours, 285 minutes late. Later, QF36 will be badly delayed, with this 1940 hours departure put back to a suggested 2345 meaning Sunday 19 MEL arrival at 1010 hours, 250 late.

The LAX - SYD QF12 on Thursday evening was more fortunate, pushing back 38 late at 2308 and arriving on Saturday 18 at 0929 hours, 54 late.

Thursday 16's QF8 (VH-OQC) departed DFW at 2049, 64 late but unusually - though doubtless not the first time - diverted to NOU where it spent from 0602 hours on Saturday 18 to what is suggested as to be 0900 hours on Sunday 19, probably because the flight crew would be 'out of hours' and hence require compulsory off-aircraft rest in NOU. The sightseeing is a bonus for QFi passengers! SYD arrival is estimated as 1155 hours on Sunday 19 January, 1790 minutes late. Was the NOU stop due to a medical emergency?

There are no publicly showing delays to A388 QFi departures ex SYD, presumably because QF127 on Saturday 18 has unusually been operated by smaller capacity A333 VH-QPB, with this 0935 hours SYD - HKG departing at 1035 and promptly taking off at 1046 with arrival estimated as 1`618, 28 late. Some passengers will find themselves 'bumped' from QF127 and the return QF128 given the likelihood that even though patronage has declined on all routes to and from HKG, there would have been more passengers booked than an A333 could handle.

QF79, the 0920 hours morning MEL - NRT (soon to be HND) pushed back an hour late so predicted at gate arrival this evening is 1812 hours, 32 behind. Colleague QF61, the 0925 hours from BNE to the same destination departed at 1009 so its arrival should be 1810, 40 delayed. These aircraft sometimes swap in NRT with QF79 forming 'the 62' and 'the 61' going down to MEL as QF79, but the roster varies without a discernible pattern.

The 1125 hours SYD - SIN, QF81, is forecast to depart 75 late, arriving Lion City at 1735, 50 minutes tardy.

It may have been unplanned, but should not have been a surprise. The aircraft left LA 3 hours late. Planned duty period for that flight is 17:25. Unless you have a reasonable expectation of the time being under 20 hours, then you'd be illegal in flying past Sydney. I wonder if they were looking ok, and then got an expected landing time from ATC that blew it out. Even one minute would matter.

It was in SYD from 1240 to 1407, arriving MEL at 1541, so again the QFi software underestimated such a delay, in this case a flight (and cabin?) crew change.

Therefore, QF35 will be even more delayed, the revised pushback estimate being 1730 hours for SIN arrival at gate at about 2220 hours late this evening, 315 ;late. 'The 36' remains showing as a proposed 2345 hours ex SIN but 0005 would be more realistic. Time will tell.

QF1 (SYD - SIN A388) is forecast to depart half an hour behind at 1730, ironically the same forecast as for 'connecting' QF35 from MEL. Neat!

UPDATE: QF35 from MEL has ben further delayed to a predicted pushback at 1750 hours for a 2240 hours arrival. QF37, the 1720 hours on the same route should depart at 1800 early this evening, arriving 45 late at 2300 hours.

There is a good chance QF35 on Sunday 19 will be delayed out of MEL should the arriving, much delayed QF36 form it.

FURTHER UPDATE: QF35 was off blocks in MEL at 1818 hours on Saturday 18. Updated estimated SIN arrival is 2309, 364 minutes late. QF36 is suggested as pushing back at 0035 on Sunday for MEL arrival of 1100 hours, five hours late.

'The 37' has been revised to a 2000 hours ex MEL, 160 minutes late with Lion City arrival estimated as 0100 hours on Sunday 19, 165 behind. If it forms QF38, the latter may push back at about 0215 if all goes well.

Normally, yes. It is usual for the arriving QF94 ex LAX to form QF35 to SIN, although winter weather in the USA (that perhaps might cause a delay to the B789 on QF12 ex JFK that ought connect to MEL in LAX) or numerous other causes can result in late arrivals.

QF94 is timetabled to arrive in MEL at 0950 hours - QF35 departs at 1210 hours, so 140 minutes for the turnaround. The quickest I can recall it occuring is about 95 - 100 minutes, so there's a little time up QFi's sleeve.

It is also possible for 'the 36' arriving in MEL to form its own, i.e. QF35 back to SIN, but this would then usually delay QF93, the 1040 hours ex MEL for LAX, as it in these circumstances would be formed by the arriving QF94 that even if on time at 0950 on blocks would lack the turnaround allowance to depart punctually back to the movie capital.

Because MEL - SIN - MEL QF35/36 is in total from off blocks to on blocks 1210 hours one day to 0600 the next morning, just short of 18 hours, this gives QFi some time to play with.

But sometimes delays compound through numerous factors, one of which can be missing the aircraft's allocated slot for arrival or departure. Then there's passengers who at the last minute fail to board, so as a security measure luggage in the hold has to be removed, and it might be in a container that's not in the first ones removed via the scissor lift mechanism.

QF35 has a reasonable timekeeping record from observation.
 
My sister is on the QF35, left home at 0300 this morning for the 6.10 flight BNE-MEL and there they stayed all day. Unsure if they will make the connecting flight. They had booked the transit hotel in Singapore which they will not require now and could not cancel booking. On the plus side (sort of) they spent the day in the F lounge and were very nicely looked after.
 
On Friday 17 January, QF12 (the B789) departed JFK 56 late at 1856, arriving LAX 40 late at 2145.

QF93 on Sunday, the 1040 hours SYD - LAX should be delayed because QF94 is arriving at 1017, 27 late while QF36 from SIN won't be at its gate until at least 1100.
 
In further today, QF126 AKL-BNE (A332 VH-EBJ) is suggested to arrive at 19 43, 153 min tardy.

QF37 MEL-SIN (A332 VH-EBA) is expected to arrive at 1 13, 178 behind.

Which QF flight LAX - SYD 24 hours ago bumped 44 passengers and why?
Would it be to conserve fuel to allow more holding and reduce risk of diversion given weather in Sydney has been bad?

I think originally it was a better time and they are flying to Helsinki as their end point....so flew QF/AY.

The delayed Saturday 18 January QF35 arrived SIN at 2308 but QF36 back down to MEL did not push back until 0125 hours on Sunday 19, so arrival should be 1151 hours, 351 minutes late. This A388 is then to operate QF93, the 1040 hours MEL - LAX estimated to depart three hours late, arriving same day at 0850, 160 minutes behind schedule. A further result will be that ex-MEL passengers booked to JFK will have to travel on an AA flight rather than the 0820 hours QF11 B789.

'The 94' is to arrive MEL half an hour late at 1020 hours so there may be a marginal delay to the 1210 hours MEL - SIN QF35.

QF18, the 2010 hours Friday 17 LAX - SYD A388 departed 50 late, arriving SYD on Sunday at 0648 hours, 33 behind schedule. The LAX to BNE QF56 was similar, arriving at its gate in the Sunshine State at 0532, 32 minutes tardy.

LAX to SYD QF12, another A388, is forecast to arrive at gate at 0906 hours, 31 behind, on Sunday 19.

QF80 from NRT down to MEL (A333 VH-QPJ) should arrive at 0829, 34 minutes past the timetable.

Further north, the HKG to BNE redeye QF98 arrived on Sunday 19 at 0610 hours, 55 late after pushing back in HKG last night 67 late at 1937.

Delayed by QF37 being late yesterday as above, QF38 from SIN to MEL (A332 VH-EBA) looks to be arriving on Sunday afternoon at 1308 hours, 178 late.

That could be an explanation yes. It’s interesting so many people were offloaded, 44 of them.

44 people offloaded would allow about 4.4 extra tonnes of fuel. So, not so much a case of conserving fuel, but adding more.

I can't access the flight plan to see what they were working on, but you can't just consider the weather in Sydney. Throughout the flight, engine out and depressurisation situations also have to be addressed, and the upshot of that is that the weather at a place like Brisbane (which was really poor) can affect the overall fuel requirements.

Thursday 16 January's DFW - SYD long distance offering that diverted to NOU, arriving at 0602 hours on Saturday 18 (see above) and that was then meant to push back at 0900 on Sunday 19 did so at 0938 hours. SYD arrival should be 1231 hours, an extraordinary 1831 minutes behind schedule as it should normally arrive on Saturday at 0605 hours. This A388 will then, as it logically should, form QF1 to LHR with plenty of time to turn around in Sydney.

QF11 (1110 hours SYD - LAX, Sunday 19) should depart half an hour late.

QF79's punctuality has markedly declined with today no exception, as it pushed back in MEL an hour late at 1020 hours for projected NRT arrival at 1825, 45 late. QF61, also NRT-bound but from northerly BNE should depart at 1000 hours (35 late) for arrival at gate at 1800 early this evening, half an hour tardy.
