Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF15, the Tuesday 21 January 2020 scheduled 1110 hours BNE - LAX B789 departed at 1207 hours with arrival suggested for the same day as 0633, 33 behind. The 0820 hours LAX to JFK should still be able to depart on time as QF11 and QF93 ex SYD and MEL are not badly late.

In one I missed - apologies - on Monday 20 the QF27 B744 (1245 hours scheduled ex SYD for SCL) did not depart until 1817, arriving same day at 1615, 305 minutes late. It turned around and became QF28, pushing back at 1845 hours, 310 minutes late after a lengthy time on the ground with Tuesday 21 arrival estimated as 2235 hours, 285 late.

The seasonal QF75 on Monday evening pushed back in SYD at 2022, 67 minutes late, arriving at its YVR gate same day at 1506 hours, 66 behind.

QF12 on Monday 20 January was off blocks in JFK at 1844 hours, 44 behind so LAX arrival should be 40 tardy at 2145 hours.

WLG had fog (not enough wind!) on Sunday afternoon and evening which closed the airport completely. Consequently there were cancelled/diverted/delayed QF & JQ flights for Sunday am to WLG, Sunday pm from WLG, Sunday pm to WLG, Monday am from WLG.

Later on 21 January, QF582 (1350 hours PER - SYD in the sky at 1505) with A332 VH-EBB should arrive at 2149 hours, 49 minutes late.

VH-VXF on QF549 (1705 hours late afternoon BNE down to SYD, in the sky at 1749 hours) should be at its arrival gate at around 2021 hours, 41 minutes behind the timetable.

QF2368 is the 1755 hours BNE - ROK in the sky at 1833 with Q400 VH-QOH. Expected arrival is half an hour tardy at 1945 hours.

The 1730 hours BNE - MOV that was 'on the move skywards' at 1819 hours with Q400 VH-QON should arrive at 1955, 40 late.

On Wednesday 22 January, QF1463 (incorrectly displayed on FR24 as 'QF2463'), the 0745 hours SYD down the short hop to CBR (Q300 VH-TQZ) took off at 0837 after departing at 0806 hours, so the lengthy taxi hasn't assisted timekeeping with arrival likely at 0923 hours, 43 late.

Punctuality is poor on this shortest of Australian major routes, and cancellations still a problem, so it's no surprise that many drive, take the bus or my favourite, the NSW TrainLInk comfortable XPlorer trains.

The world's windiest capital city was lacking wind?
On my very first trip to Wellington, I was also on my first sector with passengers during my 767 Command training. The wind was gusting to 65 knots, and the thrust was either at idle or full, but not much in between. It was an arrival, not a landing. The next flight there was a couple of months later, and was the last of the command training. 5 knots downwind at both ends...which made it look very short.

Fast forward a couple of years, and we arrived on a calm, but drizzly day, so still looking short. That was the day the aircraft decided to give me asymmetric flap extension, so we had to land with reduced flap and a higher speed. Really short looking....

Up in SYD on 22 January, QF11, the 1110 hours SYD - LAX is expected to depart an hour late with same day arrival at 0635 hours, 35 minutes tardy.

QF7, the 1440 hours A388 from SYD on the long journey to DFW is far worse with pushback tonight predicted at 2100 hours, meaning same day arrival at 1900 hours, 365 minutes late, rather than 1255.

In turn, this will hold up QF8 on Wednesday 22 ex DFW, the 1945 hours with likely earliest possible departure about 2040 hours.

So three QFi A388s delayed today, at least, ex Oz.

In further on 22 January 2020, QF616, the 1210 hours lunchtime MEL north to BNE (B738 VH-XZL) did not become airborne until 1305 hours. Predicted arrival is 1401 hours, 41 behind.

QF769 (1305 hours MEL across to PER) departed 40 late with arrival suggested at 1448, 38 minutes behind schedule for A332 VH-EBJ.

Winds are gusting to 59kmh at MEL and 65kmh at AVV. An unpleasant summer's day in the southern capital and Sleepy Hollow.

The pace of wind gusts has risen a bit more to 63kmh at MEL as at 1520 hours on 22 January.

QF871 (1110 hours ex HTI) took off at 1159 with VH-XZI and had to briefly hold east of Bendigo, so arrival should be about 1559 hours, 54 minutes late.

The 1155 hours QF881 (OOL - MEL) is fairly similar, having become airborne at 1241, so at gate arrival for B738 VH-XZM looks to be about 1601 hours, 51 late. provided it does not have to hold close to Melbourne.

QF155, the 1650 hours MEL - AKL should push back 50 minutes late from a windy MEL.

The 1430 hours SYD down to MEL, QF441, was in the sky at 1515 with B738 VH-VYH, Arrival should be half an hour late at 1635. The PER to MEL QF772 is also this late.

Continuing with 22 January, QF703 (VH-VZW, the 1200 'high noon' CNS down to MEL that was not pointing skywards until 1312 hours) is arriving at 1721 hours, 56 minutes tardy.

Like QF443 before it, QF445 from SYD down to MEL is running about half an hour late. B738 VH-VXN is the aircraft.

Northbound QF468 is the 1615 hours from MEL in the sky at 1709 hours. VH-VXM shoudl be at its arrival aerobridge at 1830, 50 behind.

More MEL to SYD flights have been delayed on 22 January 2020. QF456, the 1715 hours took off at 1841, so B738 VH-VYG should arrive at its gate at roughly 2009 hours, 89 minutes late.

The next one is QF458 (VH-VZV, the 1800 hours up up and away at 1843). Arrival looks like 1956, 31 minutes tardy.

The there's QF496 (VH-VXN, the 1745 hours airborne at 1848). A 2100 hours evening arrival is on the cards, 61 minutes behind its schedule.

QF474, the 1815 hours MEL - SYD took off at 1927 so B738 VH-VZK should be 67 late at 2047 mid evening.

QF80, the overnight NRT down to MEL has A333 VH-QPH with Thursday 23 arrival suggested as 0831, 36 minutes late as with the wet conditions in Melbourne, a hold was incurred for quite a few minutes just east of Bendigo.

The 0630 hours SYD down to MEL, QF405, did not take off unti 0719. B738 VH-VZF as at 0823 was holding in the usual position above Mt Buller (Vic) with suggested arrival about 0903, 58 late, showing how important on the poorer weather days a punctual takeoff can be, as unfortunately, miss the arrival slot and delays may well rise.

Another on the same route, QF409 (VH-XZE), the 0700 hours, took off at 0817 with arrival suggested at about 0935 hours, 65 late, although the aircraft is not yet above Mt Buller where it may have to incur a holding pattern.

Colleague VH-VXI is on 'the 409', the 0730 hours SYD - MEL that took off at 0833. It's possible some of these delayed takeoffs are mandated by air traffic control to try to reduce the amount of holding en route, which wastes fuel and must - although they're used to it - be at least mildly irritating for flight crew. Arrival is predicted for 0948 hours, 43 late.

Southbound QF2077 from MQL down to MEL is the 0635 hours airborne at 0747 hours. Q400 VH-LQD was holding a little southwest of Kerang at 0829 hours. Nominal arrival time is 0905 hours, 80 minutes tardy.
